Eventually got a special battery for earth moving equipment. Lasted 6 months dead. Interestingly the motor normally always starts first kick. Back to auto electrician and he tested and tested. Put in another new battery while he was going to boost charge the old one. The alternator test 12.8 volts at the battery not right but normally 13.8 volts at the alternator. Just asked me to start car again and he notices sparks down on the engine block. Simple fault, dirty earth connection. Now the alternator was pumping out 13.8 volts at the battery. Hopefully problem solved. He said he only ever got about one or two engine earth faults per year. He also said the worst thing manufacturers do is use flat washers. They should us star washers that bite in. On my other old cars they come from the factory with star washers on every electrical bolt connection.

High current earth faults are common in some environments, and also after major work is done, when the cable isn't refitted as well as it might. Salt is a major cause, corroding the contact point and sometimes the cable itself, or especially the strap type.
How's Boonah? Spent some time there, particularly Dugandan. Love the Scenic Rim, and often think of moving there somewhere.
