Just got my Defender this afternoon, and got my first Defender Wave, while sitting at a set of lights, just before the M5 turn off, by a Dark Gray 110 on Camden Valley Way, near the M5 in Sydney..
Any one on the M5 who didn't get a wave from me, I apologise, still getting used to her..

A large percentage and possibly the majority of Defender drivers in Perth are either AULRO members, TeamW4 members or both and the wave is generally well and alive.
I am however starting to see some newish 90's (3 or 4 seen regularly) jogging about here North of the River (Perth turn of phrase) who point blank refuse to wave and even go as far as giving you the "evil eye" when you make a point of making sure they see you.
Hopefully just uneducated and an instructional note might cure as there is very little excuse for breaching the code. :D
Cheers,
Lou

We got 2 from 2 this afternoon. Headed up to Vic Park after work for a coffee and passed 2 Defenders and got 2 waves. :D
There is a new 90 we see near Carousel all the time who never waves.

Well back from Avalon and in Brissie again, lots of waves esp in Sydney and Melbourne, :), missed a few when negotiating strange roads, so apologies from the Qld Black & Silver Defender ;) . Came across a 130 on a trailer being towed by a Toyota Ute in Dunkeld Vic, by the time i contemplated the protocol it was gone, i think i should have waved.

My Tricky 110 Temptresses have gone to ground. I've had to look for other people to stalk. I keep seeing a few G-Wagens almost every day and they still trick me until I check the grille and promptly arrest my waving!
But I'm currently running at a 76% success rate for this week's waving. This is quite good for Sydney traffic where you have to pay attention to the traffic as opposed to eyeballing Defenders.
Disappointingly I was in Canberra sans Defender over the weekend and saw HEAPS of Defenders! Waving from a car feels a little bit dirty! The Canberra show also brought several out, including a beaut Series 1 and a couple of Series 2s.

Went to visit a mate in Yass this arvo. On my way home about 6pm, ambling up the main drag of Yass, I got a wave from a lovely looking silver Disco. I only managed a response as it drew level with me, so I hope you saw it (the madly waving full right arm hanging out of the Keswick green 110 wagon). Cheers, you made my day :D

Love it Lou!, will have to use that one with SWMBO. I have even got her into it from the navigators seat now. My brother (lives part time in the UK) couldn't believe it when he was in the Tardis and other Fenderer's started waving, he thought it was cute. I just replied, "you know it takes 48 muscles in my face to frown at you but only 6 to bitch slap you mother ****er up the side of the head." We are getting quite a few 90's around here now, most are black and most don't wave, but the true Fenderer's always do. I get a shed load of waves in Ralph though.
Cheers Ian

I have had a loan defender for 3 weeks thanks to our local dealer. And I have passed a dozen or so over the past few weeks, all have waved all, have been in Puma's. And I ( like a 16 year old at a strip club) have initiated the wave 90% of the time. So for all of you bitching about the waving, it is happening in "PretenderVille". Even from a blond, very, "yummy mummy" in a Grey 110 PUMA in Mona Vale, Bungan street, at around 2pm last Saturday- I particularly remembered that one :)

We try to wave to every Defender We see.
Problem is, we normally have the driver's windo up, so sometimes can't get the arm out in time, in which case as a passenger Wifey always waves, or whoever's driving'll flash the lights and we will invariably get a response,...Pretty good stuff I reckon.
If I see one parked in the street, if the driver's around, I'll normally have a chat too.
Amazing the people that "recognize" Defenders,....we were getting fuel the other day, & a guy in a nice new Triton pulled up & wanted to talk about "Gracie"!

Yes the word is definitely out within the General populace that Defenders production is ending...lots of people stop me for a chat. Sometimes it starts with a nervous "so do you like that pommie crap?" But usually ends with "yeah I've always secretly wanted a defender!"
...I've also noticed lately that drivers of all makes and even random pedestrians are waving! It's fantastic!
There is certainly a deep love and (even if sometimes grudging) respect out there for LR series / defenders...

We went up the beach, Noosa Northshore on Friday, through Ranbow beachand camped at Inskip Point. I sadly did not see any Defenders to wave at :( Saturday, same issue! I was starting to think I was the only Landy out this weekend. Sunday came and time to pack up. Heading back via Northshore and I see a disco. I waved and no wave back :( I've given up waving to Discovery and Range Rover owners. I live in Noosa Heads and I've found that those owners (in Noosa) are too good to wave back. Sorry if I've offended anyone. So... after the disco i saw a white defender parked up and 2 councilor national parks workers toiling away so i gave them a beep and they both turned around and waved back to me :D finally got a wave! Couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Then about 5 minutes later, pasted another parked forest green defender. Another beep and another wave!

Well, We only wave to Defenders, but of course we'll talk to anyone.
Got pulled up in a breathalyser the other day, the policeman just wanted to talk about the Defender, similarly on our way to S.A. & had to stop at the Fruit checking point, a lovely Lady on duty was quite effusive about Defenders.
Funny thing is, they're not "out of place" anywhere, we've had Audi, AMG, Holden etc etc, all sorts of drivers give us a nod, or a thumbs up!

I did a bit of driving on Friday and ran 1 from 5 in the waves department.
For those that understand WA I live South of the River (SOR) but had gone North of the River (NOR) so I just put it down to being in a foreign country and them not understanding the rules :wasntme: .
In all likelihood most of them where on dual carriageways and we may not have been seen. However the white 110 sitting next to us at the lights did see us and chose not to wave in spite of the Pocket Rocket turning sideways with a big grin and enthusiastic waving.

We got a great wave from a lovely young lady in a Grey metallic Defender 90.
We were driving along Stafford rd and we both waved at the 90, the young woman saw us at the last moment and had a look as if to say WTF!, then gave a great wave back. Made our day.:D

Well, its pretty good here in Vic. :D
Travelling down from Albury the other week, we actually travelled with a young guy following us in a Grey 90. He waved when we passed him, and then stayed with us all the way to Avenal where we turned off to get a coffee. On our way passed an earlier BP, I noticed a cool looking Deefer (Puma) parked up, with two people out walking their dog. Got no idea if they owned the Deefer or not, but I tooted the horn at them :D

Saturday, I think, we spotted a Deefer, and the passenger (a lady) waved before the driver,,,, tooo cool

At the races on Sunday (Phillip Is) we got a couple of waves from various Deefers, and at the gate a guy in a Rangie Sport (?) gave us the nods up as he passed us at the gate :D and I also waved at a couple of others,,,, get some strange looks, but I think they secretly admire the Deefers ;)

Unfortunately there seem to be a few "newbies" out here NOR with an obstinate refusal to wave. Should have their bloody Defenders taken off them!
Pity you didn't run into one of the many "real" Defender owners up here! :-)

A couple of them were older ones. The one that was next to us at the lights had personal plates and was kitted out for touring. The newer 130 was the only one that waved.
Although we see a few regular ones between our place and Perth when we drive to work who refuse to wave despite our best efforts so we just ignore them now.

Even more disappointing as they should know better. There are two 130's around here operating as tradie trucks and they don't wave either, but like you said, just ignore them now.
Pity you're not keen on TeamW4 as it represents the bulk of Defender drivers in the great Perth Metro and as far out as Kal. Still worth checking out the website as its one of those "take part as much as you like" groups and certainly not a stale "traditional" club or a mad "mud plugging" crowd either.

I've had a look at the website and I'm a bit confused .
The website says the meetings are bi-monthly alternating with committee meetings which are only open to club members. When I checked in the calendar it showed the next all of the monthly meetings as being open to members and non-members. If I wanted to come along and check it out which meeting would be the best one to come to? I won't be available in April.

Defender drivers must be nicer people than Discovery drivers. Since I have owned my D3 I have waved at all types of Landrovers and haven't got one single wave in return. Not one. Is this just Townsville? I miss the waves but I must admit the air suspension, awesome stereo, comfy seats, cold aircon and that beautiful burble out of those twin pipes from the V8 do sort of make up for it. Am I sounding snobby. I do still wave.

Well today my dad and I were out collecting a gearbox in the mighty 130 Defender (I was driving), my dad waved to another Defender (Puma) driver.
I mentioned this thread and my dad said he always waves to other Defender owners and said they always wave back...
He then added "not like you, ya ignorant (so-n-so)"
He then went on a rant about all the rest of the discovery, range rover, jeep owners that are a bunch of ignorant (beeeep)....
He finished with....
"We dont need the rest of you lot"

Alas my only wave "on" Kangaroo Island was from the Defender passed as we were arriving back on the mainland. No living specimens were found during our eight days on the island. We did see several Series but they were regrettably in the vehicle graveyard near Kingscote. We did wave, and observed a moment's silence.

I tend to point and then do a thumbs up, as otherwise I just tend to get either 1) a blank expression or 2) an odd look . I should add , the 109's off the road at the moment awaiting parts and I'm driving a Courier. That's probably not helping!

Enjoyed my first few waves today in the new Puma (yet to be named). Didnt see another deefer for the first 2 weeks (either there werent any, or I was too busy not crashing it), then 3 in 5 minutes. Lets hope everyone keeps it up, its a great tradition. The only similar thing I've experienced is on holiday in King Island, where everybody waves at everybody! The first thing they tell you in the hire car info booklet. Should also be a first thing at the top of a Defender owners manual. That and how to pop the bonnet :p

An awesome Green Bushrangie at Dural (Looked like it was on portals).
Dockstrada's awesome 110 SVX & the 90 LE that he's wrecking.
Defender 90 with the plates LR90TD (TDCi) coming out of the Hilton hotel (I waved but not sure if they saw me, also I think that they are a member on here).

In the past 3 years of owning my 1st defender there has been a very steady decline in the defender wave.
One of the greatest things to hear was my wife when she first drove the car asked why people keep waving at me. She wanted to know why all my friends own defenders. :)
I pulled up at a set of lights in my old falcon and made sure a waved to the defender next to me.
With this great tradition starting to wain im going keep waving and i hope we start seeing it increase once again.

I was having fun going through puddles as well! I try to blame it on the kids but going through them is a lot of fun.
Also I highly recommend the Finn products. I have an Endorphin and a Gizmo. Did the Avon Descent a few years back on the Endorphin but what I like about Finn is the fact they are local and will go out of their way to help you.

Heading out of Melbourne on the Calder Hwy last night, saw two 110's heading towards Melb in convoy...one grey and one white with many stickers / logos all over. It was getting dark so I couldn't quite make them out and at freeway speeds on divided rd the wave can be difficult to see...I waved and flashed my lights, but no light flash in return.

I bought an old Perentie about 2 weeks ago, and was really confused by all the waving!
I had a mate in the car last weekend and he noticed I was getting lots of waves too. We laughed about how popular I am now.
I started just waving back, but the other day I locked eyes with a fellow defender driver at the servo and waved unceasingly until he returned the wave!

Sometimes I'm in my wife's car (Corolla) and I see a Defender, the urge to wave is so strong but then I think to myself it will just be confusing for the Defender driver. Makes me think we may need a "secret" wave so when not in a Defender, others will know I'm in the "club".
For the record, I always wave (when in the Defer) and would say more than 98% wave back.

I sometimes miss driving my old D1, I would see defenders all over the place.
Now I have my TD5 Defender, in Bayside Brisbane I hardly see any Defenders.
All though, I got a nice wave from a guy on his bike the other morning, I was kind of shocked and missed waving back in time as he went past.

See quite a few Defenders around the Springwood area on the south side. When we go to Maleny there are more up there too, usually dirty and dented. One bloke up there carts his calves around in the back of his 110 wagon. Imagine doing that in a Prado!

Well I'm a little annoyed! ( I can't back that up)
Kerry and I were in Dayboro today and as we were waiting at the tee intersection I clocked a milky green Puma 130 towing a portable toilet coming along the road. 'Why aye' I said to Kerry which is my code for here comes a Defender. We both gave a vigorous wave as he passed. He just looked at us both with an opened mouth expression that screamed 'WTF are you two doing'
Anyway, I'm convinced that not only is he a miserable ****, but he's also a **** house driver.:Rolling:

I pulled up behind him at the lights, cant see in at all, and he must realise this, we turn onto the hwy, and as I pass him, he rolls down the passengers window, (too easy in the Puma's ;) ), and we flicked each other an all knowing wave :D

Saw NO Defenders or Series Landys in Victoria, but most of the ones we have passed in NSW & Qld HAVE waved, including two Perenties we had to back up for on a narrow track on Fraser Island.

Recently returned from an Adelaide to Alice across the Simpson to Birdsville trip and saw more Defenders than I've seen on the last three similar trips combined. All waved and or gave the thumbs up and even had one guy run out from next to his 130 where they were camped to watch my 110 go up a dune.
Passed a 110 Puma trayback on the QAA line and had a conspiratorial laugh with them. They were quizzed about their setup by someone else that passed them who had a similar 110.
Only vehicles to limp out were a Triton with a broken chassis and a Troopy that had all but lost its rear axle. He was lucky that a big chunk of the Rig Rd was like a highway thanks to a mining rig being setup in that corner.

Yeah that counts! It also means that people that don't drive Defenders/110s (maybe) in their off duty/normal lives still think waving to other Defenders/110s is a good idea.
Bet they don't wave in their own cars to other same make/model owners.
It's definitely a Land Rover thing!

A veritable smorgasbord of Defenders today! A "proper" 130 this morning who, alas, missed my wave as he was fighting the crusty Land Cruiser in front of him. Better luck with the brand-spankers and super-shiny black 90 near North Ryde with regulation waves all 'round. Unfortunately I missed the bronze-y coloured 110 sneaking up the inside as I was ogling the 90 and I waved far too late as it rounded the corner. The same 110 (or an identical one) tooted me 10 minutes later... my feeble, too-late wave was probably missed again! But all was rectified on the home trip with a hearty wave from a white 110 near Drummoyne this afternoon. I saw the regular 110s around the back of Balmain and Lilyfield, but sans drivers. I smiled appropriately.

The situation is not so bad in the Series III FFR and Perentie FFR many more waves when driving those, but only on the highway, not usually in the big smoke.

Various rover flavours infact so dont hate me this is a "defender thread", however after reading more and more of this thread i wont be partaking in that anymore.
I thought it was simply pommy stuff so people gave the wave.
Apparently its make and model related lol.

If a disco waves to me and I see them I'll wave back. My gripe with the disco owners was from out last holiday (up north WA) where every other car make and model was waving except the discos.

Yer know, I am a bit ashamed, but I only tend to wave at Defenders (all types) or Series. This is only because I have found that most others don't wave back. However as I said earlier, I have noticed that a lot of the newer Pumas don't wave back and look at you like you are an idiot. But I won't stop waving. Kerry's on board and waves just as enthusiasticly as I do. We both think you're a bit miserable if you don't wave back.

Good to hear you won't stop waving. I'm a new puma owner, and always wave and 99% of time receive waves back. In my experience puma owners have always waved back. I'm sure there are maybe a few new owners who are unaware, but at the same time it does seem unfair for anyone to develop a prejudice against puma drivers. I've had TD5's not wave back. Just depends on the individual. Not what engine they have under the bonnet or how shiny the paint is

I'm glad you think that way. It is a Landy thing after all. And I'm not saying all Pumas don't wave. Most do, it just seems that a lot don't compared to older Defenders. Almost all Series do in my experience which leads me to think maybe it's an age thing as well.
Now I'm just spit balling, but maybe Pumas wave at Pumas as if it's like for like and the newer owners don't see their Defenders in the same way as older Defenders.
I just think it's a Defender wave regardless.

I think there are some, certainly not all, Puma owners (mostly newish 2.2s) that wouldn't be able to tell one Defender from another. They don't wave because they aren't Land Rover people or even Defender people really, they just bought it because it's the fashionable thing to do right now.
You see them around the private schools at home time and in Adelaide they are everywhere in the upper crust burbs. You see 3 or 4 each drive through those areas at the right time of day.
They'll all be for sale in a year or two and most likely traded on the Audi that they should have been bought in the first place.

I wave at every Defender I see. Pretty good percentage of return waves from other Defenders. As I highlighted on another thread tonight the waves from other Landrovers are almost non existent.
Got a great wave tonight from a white 130 dual cab coming home!
Amusingly here in Perth there doesn't seem to be many Defenders at the private schools. I think there is one other (a 90) doing a drop off at Scotch and there is only one other (coincidently another 90) at St Hilda's. But don't worry - I have no intention of ever selling mine!

My other car is a 1971 Fiat 124 Coupe, and not only will other owners wave, they will beep their horns, point enthusiastically at the nearest petrol station and pull in for a one hour commiseration about the latest mechanical problems both parties have been having.
They also stick notes under your windscreen letting you know they've seen your car while they were going somewhere.
That kind of behavior should be encouraged.

Same here, El Rey - my other car is a 1967 Austin Healey and the wave return from other Healeys is a 100% success rate.....and I've found similar figures with other makes of classic car. It's the understanding that regardless of the type or badge, the other chap loves spending his weekends chasing electrical gremlins, cursing Lucas, tuning carbies polishing, waxing and praying for sunshine.
Defender drivers aren't too dissimilar, there's just a few who don't wave; they bought the car because it's the coolest Chelsea Tractor ever made and dominates the soccer Mum car park....they simply don't realise there's an entire community who bought it for the myriad other reasons and wave at each other like they were kids on Christmas Day out on their new bikes.

Why don't we have a nominated UHF channel to switch to,to have a yap. I have just returned from a 7 week trip up north and saw quite a few defenders waved and got all but one back. If we had a nominated channel we could see how others are going and where they have been. Usually you call someone on the above, and, once communication is established, you drop to a nominated channel (or go up if you've both got 80 channel sets), and do your chitchat there, leaving the call channel as free as possible

Going through Grafton today from Glenraegh I got a big wave from Defender with red and blue lights on the roof.
Didn't recognise the logo on the door?

Got 3 waves in about 2 minutes today.
I had to drop mine off at the dealer for some minor warranty work and as I drove past to the lights to do a legal u-turn I spotted a black 110 coming out of the dealer. Turned out they'd just taken delivery. At the lights while I waited for my turn a grey 110 turned onto my road. This one had personal plates. At the same time a Red TD5 with a white roof pulled up opposite me.
Successful waves where exchanged all round.

That would have been the TD5 dual cab Rural Fire Service Defender from the Ulmara Fire Control Center. It would likely have been travelling to or from the Grafton Airport (about 10-12 km South of Grafton on the east of the Highway). Was it red and white (possibly with the spare tyre on the front of the bullbar)?

The 110 coming out of Southern LR about 430ish? I think that was me!! She's Corris Grey with the Black Pack... So purdy!
My first Defender Wave, and I hadn't even made it down the road :p

The wave in mandatory in The D'Fer. And there is more than a hint of regret if one is missed. Even the kids are in on it.
It's also difficult stopping the wave reflex when I'm driving SWMBO's Merc.
But I must admit that I've kept the wave exclusively Defender. Once I discriminated against a friendly Disco 1 driver...
Does this make me a bad person?

Primarily white, maybe a splash of red, i was too gobsmacked at getting a very friendly wave from an Emergency vehicle, the logo on the door looked quite ornate.

I wonder if we could pinch this to complement the wave, i think its perfect :)
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Does the wave count for Series owners? After all they are the parents of the Defenders.

Of course it does! Series one through to RR Autobiography and Signature. You'll all get a wave from my lot!

Surely we would wave at all of the Series and Defenders as one - I would definitely wave.
I waved at an early Land Rover Series in Richmond on Monday and got a wave back! Sorry I don't know my Series - but it was sand coloured, like a 90 with no roof or sides, no windscreen or windows and a split rear door - such a cool car. Obviously been shopping in 35c heat - it had pool noodles in the back!!!!!
Cheers,
Col.

The Grafton Defender is sort of like this one.

Thanks to several Defender wavers on the Pacific Highway between Taree and Coffs Harbour on Sunday. Special mention goes to the grey dual cab with impressive barwork on the tray. Even my Hilux-driving son mentioned how tough it looked.

Welcome to the club I was in the Keswick 110 and Pocket Rocket was in the Red 90 that was already parked out the front. Marcus told us he'd just made a delivery.:D

I wave to just about all LR's that I see. I reckon most D3 and especially D4 owners in general don't even know they are driving Land Rovers so little to no success from them.
The normal exceptions is if the Disco's are modded up bars, snorkels etc then the response rate dramatically improves.
Having said that very few Deefer drivers ever wave back either. Maybe it's because I'm in a Disco ... ;)
Or maybe it's because they need both hands firmly on the wheel to keep the old buses from wandering off the road? ... :p

Unfortunately today in virtually the same spot on the other side of the road on our way home from work we were completely ignored by a 90 going the other way.

That hint of regret when you miss one is very real - I look forward to seeing a Defender to wave at --> out my way I don't see too many Defenders - so many Toyota 4wd driving around.
There has been a white 110 parked out the back of North Richmond shops the last day or two - I give it a wave for good measure :D

Actually - there was no one in the truck!
I gently wave at a 110 in a car park (as fun) such is the lack of Defenders out my way :o
Funny thing is how the wife is now spotting Land Rover Defenders (and Series) - so I may spot more and wave now I have her on board!
Cheers,
Col.

Got a honk and a wave from a 6x6 Perentie on Monday while traveling home on a he Bruce Hwy. I could see the guy in my rear views and he sped up to catch me. When he got alongside he was honking and waving like mad. A true Landy nut!
Made our day.
