That is a Land Rover Perentie. Go to the 'Coil Sprung Military Land Rovers' section and you'll learn all about them. The canvas top and roof rack are both factory equipment.

This is a loan Defender from my local LRJ dealership hence, what makes it the "Best x Far" is it is for free, all I need to concern myself about is filling it up.

At first glance, I was not taken with the colour combination but it as really grown on me and the classic simplicity had made me question myself on all the after market products being added to my Defender.

Some observations from first overnight trip since the build Gullwing windows with lockers behind are really convenient. The gas strut and fold up bench on the rear door very handy The collapsible shower bucket on the spare wheel jib very welcome. 60 liters of water in 2 tanks but a couple of jerrys handy as much quicker and easy to fill at a river Now the negs a step needed for access to bunk (to bloody old ) .Two awnings required a small one between doors on drivers side and a larger on the other. Will just rivet some sail track on and fit canvas when needed:) Some pics with some one even sending me one with dog showing his displeasure  .New step just sits over side rail

On my recent road trip back to Qld to visit my folks, I went back to check out a couple of old haunts.

Here's Agnes on the Freshwater Road up near Rainbow Beach.

noyakfat
26th February 2015, 07:43 PM
On the way up to Qld, just north of Gilgandra, I drove through about 40 km of swarming Australian plague locusts. Thankfully, they were travelling in loose bands, not one massive plague swarm.

I kept a very close eye on the temperature gauge, but it stayed stable and there were no other signs of trouble from the vehicle.

I stopped for the night at St George, and cleaned out the locusts that afternoon.

I've attached photos of the front of Agnes, before and after removing the grille, and the pile of locusts next to my Fred Flintstone foot, after I removed as much as I could from the various radiator bits.

I went to visit Nugget in Brisbane, to see the hardware he used to fit his Syklone pre-cleaner to the Safari snorkel tube. He was kind enough to fit my pre-cleaner using his chosen hardware. What a true gentleman. Thanks Wayne :D

Anyway, when the Safari ram head was removed, there were a few locusts wedged in the top. The whole way from Nugget's place to my parents place on the Sunshine Coast, I kept wondering if locusts had made it down to my air filter through the Safari ram head.

At my destination, I opened the air box and removed the air filter. I was happy to see only a small assortment of bits and pieces of insect that had been stopped by the gauze material and nothing had entered the element of the filter.

I reckon if I put all the bits and pieces together, I maybe could have reconstructed about three locusts and a butterfly :D

Oh, I had faith, but hadn't stopped to look at it yet so thought I should be aware of any negative signs.

I also thought about it a bit like flossing teeth. I wanted to keep it as close to clean as possible and not let crap build up over time. Those cooked bugs set pretty hard (had a rather interesting smell as well. A bit beyond medium rare for my likes).

I agree, looks perfect as is wolfman, classic white rims and white roof. ...but as you are the wolfman, why not grab a set of wolf rims too with AT's for off road/long trips. They're HD, won't dent off road and come in white or black. Then you can keep your classic originals looking good.

Yeah that's what happens I've seen it on a few others too. I do a lot of long drives in mine and the hours of highway driving seem to melt it quicker than short trips.
LR actually were replacing mine for free when they serviced the vehicle at 20000 kms, so it obviously a design floor.

Awesome set up though, very good looking bar!

When I was discussing with Murray the look of the bullbar he said the loops were lower to allow the fitment of a light bar keeping it below the level of the bonnet. The additional cost to make the loops higher for labour was the same as the lightbar so I put that on instead.

But yes it is a wall of light when they're all turned on :D,

Got the 90 out for a short trip to the family beach hut! Took the freshly acquired and freshened up No5 with me; it performed beautifully.

Also saw my twin at Queen's beach in Bowen. That was pretty cool, but didn't get a pic. :(

Edit: Should have mentioned that it was the first time on the beach for the 90. So I wasn't sure on how it would perform towing a trailer; especially at the entrance and exit where there had been a lot of traffic that churned it all up making it very soft. Didn't have any trouble.... except for parking the trailer when i forgot that the brakes work when reversing.... oooppppsssss

If my memory serves correct, currently have APT diff and steering guards, Mulgo sliders, some light protectors and a rijidij bar and wheel carrier sitting either in the garage or on order, probably some lights in there somewhere also. They have certainly become much more common in the last five years or so, but I would be very surprised if their current sales came close to those of the 110, or perhaps even of the 130.

Short wheelbase Landrovers (and other four wheel drives) have been in a small minority in this country since the 1980s or even 1970s.

Yep, those of us who just want a vehicle to enjoy with no sense of practicality whatsoever :D

I never would have got the 90 if LoneRanger hadn't got the 110 first as it's completely impractical for our needs but we both really enjoy driving it. It's like driving a zippy sports version of the 110, has a better turning circle so it's easier to maneuver around in tight spots and is just so much fun both on and off road.

I chose a 90 because I wanted a Defender, went to the dealership with the Mrs, she saw a 90 and I wasn't allowed to look at the 110 because it was "big and ugly". Really though, I rarely have more than 1 or 2 ppl in it so still mostly practical enough for me, for the times it's not the towing capacity is it's trump card. My 90 gets dirty, I love driving it on and off road but I do have to admit that a 110 does ride more luxuriously.

Is it so wrong to keep a Defender clean? I love my 90 to bits, it is my daily driver...and I like to keep it clean.

When I sold my Citroen C4 after 10 years of ownership and daily driving, you could eat off the chassis and engine bay. I have always enjoyed looking after my cars and the Defender is no different.

This however does not stereotype me as a caf?-latte sipping city yuppie even though I have to drive through parts of the city to get to work. I enjoy every moment in my Defender, I wave whenever I see another one and I like my coffee black... :D

Now if you will excuse me, there are dried water drops on my chassis rails.:p

I agree Orkney, I wash "Betty" every weekend because I enjoy it. My wife and I both prefer her to the Rangie and if people call us Latte Sipping Pretenders - thats exactly what we are, but we have always loved Landys.

And we wave at all Landy's that pass us and 90% wave back ... and we don't need approval to drive a Pretender Defender :)

My110DC is always dirty, not gobs of mud, camel trophy dirty... I just rarely ever wash itt unless fresh from a dirty trail. It has seen some great offroad trips and been covered in thick mud etc... But sometimes it's months between trips.

So I have a dirty 110 that's used way more as a city daily driver.... And given the months between trips could be seen as a "defender pretender" even though it's not pristine clean.

I washed my 110 over Easter. Its 11 months old and the first time its seen a hose. I washed the 90 2 weeks before. Its 6 months old and that was its first wash excluding the sprinkler underneath and clean after our Christmas trip.

I always say I'm going to keep my cars clean but its just not a priority. I used to clean the Dmax after every trip and just after we picked up the 110 I bought a polisher. I don't think its been out of the box yet.

The first thing I do on every holiday is go get the car dirty to make it look authentic. Nothing worse then seeing a sparkling 4WD when camping. :o

Benta is a small town a few hours drive out of Kuala Lumpur, crossing a state border from Selangor into Pahang state.

Pictures start at the trail head. Most of the vehicles with me are highly modified non-Landys. My dual cab is pretty much stock standard.

Pretty open trail to start with. The further into the jungle the more it closes in....in no time we had to start cutting a path through underbrush.

Beer gut and dark tee is me. The 110DC is my daily driver back in the city.

Notice the rest of the convoy are all modified vehicles. Raised, larger tyres, XT or MT tyres, etc.

Not that it's heavily loaded in the pic (we had done several drops along the trail) my pretty much stock standard landy, still sporting AT tyres it came with, could carry the most payload (by weight, not volume) and had no issues keeping up with the "big boys" despite thick mud, rough trails, broken log bridge crossings etc.

Hi Flagg, The Brindies drive was a quick one for us too. Just did a quick drive up to Mt Franklin (as far as the locked gate) and then home, for a mate who hadn't been in my vehicle before. Next time when it's not hosing down rain we may do some other tracks.

I haven't been along the entire length of two sticks for a few months. Last time I only linked up to a section of two sticks while driving a bit of a loop to show the in-Laws a quick bit of the Brindies.

I'll be out there again for another stickybeak before too long, so will check out two sticks then.

All the ones the dealer could get were metallic colours and had leather heated seats etc. I just wanted a plain one and there were 'none available', I didn't have the money then anyway, so didn't mind the wait.

Looks like a proper 110 with the HD Rims.

5 month wait, why not just get them from LRA stock? or can't the dealer do that?

When I asked for them the dealer flat out said no, not possible.

That was some 7 years ago.. the whole experience had me walking in to a dealer wanting a new Puma and leaving so annoyed that I purchased my current '86 110 used the money I'd saved for the puma to do it up.

Anyway, no one likes a whinger so here is a photo from a trip the other morning:

Flagg, was just wondering what your thoughts are on your turbo setup now that you've had a couple years on it? (The build thread was drool-worthy!)
Thinking of a similar install but most likely with an ATA intercooler as opposed to your awesome (but also budget killing) WTA setup.

Took the 110 for a drive in Francois Peron National Park today. From the pic it doesn't look like it did much work - because it didn't have to! Compared to the ole D-Max it just cruised along.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/members/pocket+rocket-albums-d110-picture5332-deefer-sth-gregories.jpg

Funny story though, Lone Ranger and I were at the tyre deflation point and as instructed (for care of the track and ease of driving) put the tyre pressure down to 20 psi. In the time it took 2 of us to deflate 4 tyres the guy behind in a Navara managed to deflate all 4 tyres on his car and another 4 on his dual axle trailer - or so he thought. He shook his head at Lone Ranger when he found out what we were deflating ours to.

So anyway down the track as expected the whole convoy (2 toyotas, 1 navara and 1 patrol) were stuck on the track with all the maxtrax out and in the process of getting out the snatch straps. Lone Ranger drove up and asked them if they needed any help and they almost seemed offended :p. So then he drove off through the same section in 2nd gear high range without the centre diff lock engaged :D

Hey Benlow, thanks mate. The turbo and engine is going really well. I've had a bad run with starter motors and some other bits but the engine is great. I broke a stud in the head - only noticed the very small oil seep. The silver lining in that is that with the top end refresh it is sooo smooth and runs so sweet I've been able to drop a 150rpm off idle.

If I were to do it again, there isn't much I'd change.. very happy with it. The only thing is that it is a 30year old 4x4 with 450k odd km on it.. so you will always be dealing with things wearing out. There isn't much I've not replaced or at least inspected now.

I had to go WTA because I wanted to retain the AC.. and I couldn't fit a 3inch thick FMIC as well as the radiator and the AC heat exchanger, even with the extended grill. The high mount adds insult to injury! if you are not doing that then a ATA FMIC will give you heaps of intercooling, albeit with more lag and piping. With my setup, there is no lag. (Apart from the turbo howl and woosh) you can't tell it is a turbo from driving it.

Be very careful what you install onto your defender when in warranty.

Macarthur auto installed my gear then when it came to fixing a few issues when they were servicing it voided the warranty with the dual batteries, safari snorkel, 2" suspension lift, bullbar.

Front transfer seal wouldnt warrant due to suspension lift.

Clutch due to e-lockers

Turbo hose due to intercooler

Egr cooler due to aftermarket exhaust

I still love the car and plan to keep it for a long time but getting very frustrated with landrover and their inabilty to accept any responsibility even though searches prove that other standard cars are having these issues also.

Thanks for the tip Azza. That's good to know. Hopefully my additions don't impact warranty as they are only external protection items and are not performance related in any way.

I picked it up yesterday, but all the parts I have ordered and required fitting hadn't been done!

This includes Rijidij rear wheel carrier, APT steering guard, APT front & rear diff guards and Mulgo bumperettes. These accessories have been ordered since January, and they had the car for 3 weeks, so i was pretty disappointed for them to not have these parts. They rely on Opposite Lock to buy and fit, but they're saying they can't get the parts. Seems very strange to me.

If they are getting the APT items direct from Ben (APT Fabrications), it shouldn't take any more than a couple of days (If he has them in stock). (I ordered mine from Ben on Monday, and got them on Thursday) The Rijidij Wheel Carrier & Front Bull Bar (Which I ordered) I will/should have in 6 weeks. (As these have to be fabricated first).. As for the install of the protection devices (Steering, Diff Guards) they only took me one evening to install. (I have the same items you ordered, plus the fuel tank guard. Which I have not installed yet.. Need to use up some fuel before I can tackle that one (Currently got a FULL tank of fuel). It will be easier with a lighter fuel tank.)

I have the Mulgo Bumperettes & Side Rails as well.. (Bumperettes take no more than 20-30 minutes to install.)

Wolf

Got an email from Ben this morning, regarding the bracket he made for the Fuel Guard. (To make it easier to install), he realised that he supplied the wrong one, and he shipped the correct one today by Post. Can't get any better service that that..

I still love the car and plan to keep it for a long time but getting very frustrated with landrover and their inabilty to accept any responsibility even though searches prove that other standard cars are having these issues also.Firstly, Land Rover themselves are not responsible for any modifications that may have been done by the dealer unless it was installation of genuine dealer installed Land Rover accessories. For example if before delivery the dealer installs an Acme widget then Land Rover are not and should not be held liable for any issues that result from that installation, including a Land Rover part that failed as a result of the Acme widget. HOWEVER, by law, if it was delivered to you that way *from the showroom floor*, then *the dealer* is responsible for the overall "package" that they sold you. The dealer may or may not be able to get warranty work underwritten by Land Rover (or by a thrid party that they may have subcontracted the installation to), but either way that is the dealer's problem and *the dealer* is responsible for what they sold you. Of course, they may try to squirm out of their responsibility, perhaps in the hope that you are not a well informed consumer.

"Front transfer seal wouldnt warrant due to suspension lift." Was the lift installed by the dealer before the car was delivered? If it was then it is the dealer is liable for warranty repair of the seal (not Land Rover)...

"Clutch due to e-lockers" Were the e-lockers installed by the dealer before the car was delivered? If it was then it is the dealer is liable for warranty repair of the clutch (not Land Rover)...

...etc - you get the picture... NCAT is your friend. Search NCAT. Often the price of performing a repair costs the dealer less than addressing a complaint filed with NCAT, so if you are experiencing push back then mention to the dealer that you will be raising a case with NCAT and you may find that they change their position. A key phrase to use in the same sentence as NCAT is "market expectations".

Any modifications you made after taking initial delivery of the vehicle are more difficult to resolve, especially if they were installed by a 3rd party that was engaged by you rather than by the dealer.

Speaking personally, my vehicle has been heavily modified since I took delivery of it and, as part of that modification process I accepted that I may or may not have to kiss some (most?) aspects of the remaining 12 months of warranty good-bye.

Anyway, by way of apologizing for getting a bit OT, here's a photo of my Defender:

Few shots from Rainbow Beach - Double Island Point - Fraser Island.

Drove the 110 from Geelong to Fraser - didn't miss a beat and cruised effortlessly on the highway. Although she let water (talking an inch) into the footwells in both the Newcastle and Brisbane storms - I've never seen rain like it. And the adaptor shaft feels like it is about to let go any time soon - must get that looked at.

Well I thought it was about time I put up some photo's of my 110. I've been on here for ages, but always seemed to forget to post pics. To busy reading all the great advice, and members builds, I guess.

So here he is, pretty much the way I want Busby at the moment. Just fitted some 2nd hand Wolf rims, and Wrangler M/T's today. Courtesy of some great members here on the forum, thanks guy's.
I don't know why but I've always liked the Land Rover steel rims on a Defender, my 130 had them and now the 110. Plus after seeing how much weight we carted around over the Easter holiday, the Wolf's are better suited to the task than the alloys.

Noticed the clearance with your garage roof. Much difference in margin with an empty car with an almost empty fuel tank?

Naa, you'd need a stag for that. :wasntme: tell you what though, if you added an E-Type to the line up you'd get the Best of British award!
I looked at a lot of Stags in the early 80's and could not find one for sale that didn't have horrendous oil leaks - I mean they make Landy's look like a desert underneath :)

Few photos of my Landy after a recent roadtrip. Went Geelong, Cooma, Armidale, Hay, Flinders Ranges, Port Lincoln, Esperance ending in Perth and will be here for a while. Did 8000km and the Landy went well, few minor things but nothing major

A moments pause under the trees on the Calder Hwy. ...not one other Defender to wave to in 600km! Nice rain most of the way though. Landy was purring.

Thanks Cuppabt, yes a bit too shiny I admit, embarrassingly clean! ...though I like the many moods if Indus...sometimes looks almost white, others flat grey too. Nice towel rack!.. Yours is too shiny too by the way!

Cheers MrLandy. It's so shiny that it demands a wash as soon as it gets home. I have to admit, I like it shiny.

Here's my '15 D90.

Jumped on a cancelled factory order so it has a few bits I wouldn't have paid for (Santorini Black /w black leather & black headliner), but am slowly de-blinging it! Going to stick on some white wolfs, safari snorkel and roof rack in the next few weeks...

After some time at the dealer ironing out a few minor issues, they unfortunately washed her for me. Thought I'd take a shot before the mud goes back on :p

Not 100% sure. It was done by the dealer (or whatever company they use). They said it was "darkest legal". It doesn't actually look that dark normally. Being a black car I'm more concerned about its UV rating but, again, the only info I got was that it's "darkest legal". The stealer tried hard to sell me the privacy glass but they didn't seem to understand that it actually has little or no heat/uv reduction qualities.
