I'm guessing that's the 147" model sold to Safari Companies and also used for the factory tour?

My daughter picked up her 90 yesterday. Hers is the black one, mine is Keswick and my wifes is the Red 90. The red 110 belongs to a friend.

My lovely wife bought me a set of plates. I've been eyeing off a couple of options, this one, 1-TEN and I liked DFNDR. But it was taken. Oddly DFNDA was available but it didn't grab us. Kerry liked 1-TEN and ordered it up for me.
I recognise it's a silly purchase but hay, I think it's kinda cool

It's not so silly to personalise your Deefer. My new plates arrived last week. It took me a long time to decide between the relevant options that were available. I ended up with these. I thought the green would have been a bit darker and less fluro but they'll do me and the ute.

i was looking for some up here in Sydney, there were a couple of good ones for a defender available -"ONETEN" was there and "SLUGB8" (as in the snail poison) but the cost up here for that sort of thing is horribly expensive, I opted my name and birthyear, red on black, on my black 90

Got away for the past weekend. My 7yo son came along. An LCII and a hilux, both on 35" MTs and lifted and locked, were travelling companions. My TDCi DCPU is on standard suspension, no lifts and 33" MT.

None of the obstacles (muddy trails and ruts) seemed difficult to me. Later one of the toyota drivers mentioned having to need a couple of runs with lockers in to clear somewhere...

The plan was to help out a couple of engineers recce suitable sites for pico hydro power generation for Orang Asli (aborigines) villages.

Though its not quite like comparing apples to oranges, I admit it is probably like comparing mandarins to oranges, but for comparison.......
http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/special-license-plates.phphttp:// gives an idea what other RTA's of different markets charge for similar. This is the DMV (Florida's RTA) charging $15USD for its personalized plates (plus reg fees=minor). Its depressing to think of the fees that are charged to us (optional of not) and they get away with! Then again that is why a price tag is the 'value' of something and not the 'price' to make it.
Done...... off my soap box.

Thanks! Congrats on your 90 too, I'll look forward to seeing a picture of it when you get the keys. Mine was on the Asian King which I suspect left England a little after your car.

I've been told by the dealer that it can take up to two weeks from port to delivery, which is going to feel like an eternity :(

Not sure as the previous owner has had it all set up and has a tray for it to travel under the roof rack when not in use.

The rack is a front runner as is the gull wing window where the table is so I am presuming the table is the same breed.

My mrs and I did a vic high country trip licola to dargo including some tough tracks like butcher country, Caledonia river and billy goat bluff to name a few and the tyres were great everywhere. As far as the bogholes, which I think are just stupid, I got caught on my diff as people before had been through with huge tyres and channeled them out. Mind you I will be staying well away from bogholes unless I have no other way. 1 hour at the car wash with a high pressure hose cleaning the underbelly of my automobile is one draining process

Haven't been through a hell a lot of muddy stuff but what I have they worked very well

At the risk of provoking another holy war over tyre widths - I think you have nailed a key point.

We get a lot of different kinds of mud over here, hardly any rock, sand or shale. (On some trails a lot of smooth river-rock type boulders). I find the relatively narrow 255/85R16 MT work well here. On some surfaces (hard packed clay) even these narrower tyres don't get a full tread depth bite.

Isn't tread length more important than its width?

Ha ha ha they're a big rip off. My Father in-law got stung, he walked into a supermarket bought a BBQ chicken and a hair comb $50. Ha ha ha, he never heard the end of it the rest of the holiday, I paid out on him, the hair comb was $20, and a $30 BBQ chicken. Sucker.....

I'd say... How many times a year do you 'do mud'? Or is it just for phat looks? MT's are atrocious on anything except serious mud. AT's 235/85R16 or 7.50R16 is all I've ever needed to pull many a Tojo out of a bog.

You answered your question I reckon. Wide tyres = bulldozer. Skinny tyres = caterpillar tracks.

...unless of course you want me to tow you out next time? Don't worry you'll look phat. There will be more dirt sprayed up the side of your Landy too and those baggy sidewalls will see you shelling out for more new tyres more often too. ...I'll still grab a beer with you afterwards though 😊

Hi D90;
How are your JW Speaker Replacement headlights? Im looking at getting a set from the UK myself, and as they are just about the most expensive, wanted an unbiased opinion before I spend the money.
Also, can you recommend a retailer?
My 110 has ARB Intensity driving lights so its not as if I need extra high beam, but I mostly want them for low beam and styling.
Thanks for any help with this.

I have only the low beam headlights and my high beam come from where the parker lights are. The lights are fantastic. They are a major improvement on the standard halogen headlights. The colour of light is also better

I bought them from the uk somewhere after searching a

No spacers, no rubbing and just adjusted steering stops a tad. No plans to lift it, she is brand new so I'm getting my monies worth out of stock suspension.
Only just fit in underground car parks anyways....

It just gets better from here on - around 2000km and it starts to drive better. I am up to 8000km and it really is a better car especially lower down the rev range i.e. in 3rd it will pull away much better after slowing down to go around a corner in the local streets.

As for the rain - learnt that lesson when I parked slightly down hill - love that splash as you open the door to get out - quite refreshing :D

Maybe if you are in an accident, it's not all that "matters"....
The tyres are an illegal fitment onto those rims.
Did you put them on yourself or did a tyre shop fit them?

The minimum rim width, as stated by the manufacturer themselves is a 7.5 inch rim.

Table showing rim width and fitment specifications is in the link posted below.

Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 | BFGoodrich Tires (http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/category/off-road-tires/mud-terrain-t-a-km2/tire-details)

Edit, actually reading this thread and a few other ones in the Defender section, you're not the only one with illegal tyre fitment, the fella in the post immediately above this one also has the same tyre specs (but different brand) also on sawtooths... In his case the minimum rim width for the tyre fitment is a 7.5 inch manufacturer recommends an 8 inch width though...

A few of my 90's run much bigger than stock tyre/wheel combinations but are fully engineered and road legal.

Anyways, enough of my bitching,

I like the looks of your 90LE, looks very similar to mine, although I haven't yet fitted a raised air intake.
Just be careful of the front guards lower corners, they are very exposed by the raised angle of the front bar...
I have a similar tube bar from First Four, and badly crumpled both front guards and headlight surrounds, which was a very expensive fix.

Good recall Mike. When I first started using this site I was amazed at how helpful people were and their level of technical knowledge. Then after a few years I noticed a lot of "know alls" who just wanted to argue and prove they knew more than someone else on the thread.
Arguing about tyre size and legal/ illegal is like arguing about religion and politics and morals; as long as it's not hurting someone else, each to their own, eh? :)

I was looking at these posts again (as one does) and came to the conclusion my previous post could be misconstrued/ misinterpreted as, upon rereading, it looks like I'm calling Mike (90@) a know all. Nothing could be further from the truth - I don't know the man; though, what he says about legalities is absolutely spot on and insurance companies, as we all know, look for any angle to worm their way out of paying up on a claim. In fact, if you look up the RTA/ RMS, Services NSW (or whatever they call themselves this week) website, you'll be disappointed at the minimal amount of modifications you can legally do to any car without engineering. Also, if you have very wide tyres and manage to get them onto narrow rims they're more likely to roll off when you deflate off road. I was all for wheel spacers and fat tyres until I found out they're (spacers) illegal on road and will void your insurance in the event of a claim.
I still stand by my comment about arguing about tyre sizes being like religion and politics - I started a thread once about sizes when driving on sand on Fraser Island - well, didn't that start a few arguments and it left me totally confused as to who was right and wrong.

cheers Gerald

Hi Didge. I was on Frazer Island in January. When I'm there I travel with my Nephew and a well known Frazer identity. My Puma 110 is fitted with Conti ATs. Bog Standard. Nephew's jacked up Hilux Sr70, big Mts, struggles. Well known identity, J70 Tray Back, Slightly bigger than standard Mts, Recons he would do much better with my tires on his.
Just thought I'd throw that one in.

7.5R16s are best on sand IMO, closely followed by 235/85R16. If you could go taller without going wider it would be even better - creating a longer tread (think caterpillar) when aired down, as opposed to a wider tread with more frontal resistance.

It's interesting that LR, for want of a better word, their serious 4wd, the Defender, has stuck with tall and skinny, as opposed to lower profiles.
what other 4wd comes ex factory with 85's

Does anyone make a 90 profile for 16 inch, it would be a cheap lift

The current LC70 Landcruiser workmate wagon comes stock with 7.5R16's.

How many owners leave it like that? Probably not that many, outside primary production and mining companies.

Despite the pros and cons of each, it seems there has definitely been a long term trend towards big fatties, and I guess it's all personal preference at the end of the day.

I have 265/75R16's on Agnes (purchased entirely due to price at the time) and when I wear them out, I'm going back to 235/85R16. I haven't been disappointed with the 265's, I just prefer the skinnier 235's.

Whatever you have, get out there and enjoy them :D

Ford T as standard had 30x3.5 tyres, but their main advantages offroad were light weight, good weight distribution (most weight on driving wheels) and high ground clearance. But the minimum recommended tyre pressure was 60psi, and dropping below about 40 was asking for trouble.

7.50 x 16 tyres are 100% profile and readily available.

Good point.

Here's one from my visit home to Qld's Sunshine Coast last year. I parked Agnes next to one of Jamie Hazelden's vehicles.

:D

How does he drive with that stupid sticker on the bloody windscreen! Is he only 5" tall????

I guess he's used to it. I can't stand stickers anywhere on my car.

Looks like a few of us have had the 8 month wait before our 110s turned up. Well my long wait was over last Friday and I bought home my new very black 110 to park alongside my wife's 90 and our 29year old Perentie.

The problem now is deciding which one to drive. Each one is great fun.

Still waiting for a snorkel (can you believe after 8 months they "didn't have any in stock" - how much notice do they need?) and need to decide on a UHF before we go too far a field.

Hi Avion,

well spotted ! Yes - they are Wolf mirror arms. They are perfect for towing the van (when pushed to the outer most setting). Only issue is sometimes when a large truck passes at speed - the drivers side moves in '1' space. So I just open the window and push it back.

Got them off ebay from a fellow in Victoria (they were still new).

Hi Billy, For the most part I made it from this body kit:

Your order details are:
1x #606000036-0/77682 1/10 Scale D90 Rigid Plastic Body Kit = $77.12

Purchased from HobbyKing.com in the USA. I then trawled the web looking for a 4WD vehicle with the same 282mm wheelbase, because the advert said it fits any 1/10ths scale rock crawler! I found one but it has a massive track. Anyway I made it all fit together & it goes exceptionally well. Next time I will get the proper Gelande chassis.

It is all 1/10th scale & the body is a TDi to start with, which takes some remodelling for the Puma hump:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/04/871.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030929_zps9tgvrgyu.jpg.html)

Even has the bulkhead vents!

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/04/872.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1040114_zpstf3lhmcj.jpg.html)

The logo's plates etc, were just scaled on the computer & then printed on card, stuck on with PVA wood glue, and sprayed over with clear lacquer. Same for the grill. As for the paint, that was some left over light green I had for my old Frankin Premier caravan, now gone!

The aerial is 2db which I picked up from TJM on special $5. I also have a metal whip 6db. I use both to connect to a 5watt Icom handheld radio as I didn't want a fixed radio in the car.
The short aerial I use mostly when I travel with others and avoid getting clipped by branches. The 6db I use for longer drives when on my own, get better coverage.
I don't think I need the thick whips, what I have serves me fine.
The ideal spot for any aerial is in the middle of roof not on the bull bar, so, the roof rack is as close to optimum spot.
At least that's what I learned in my electronics engineering course.

Well the angle in the first photo makes the car look like a toy or it makes you look really tall, so I guess when you look closely you can see it is steep but that's a very common comment when posting pics of steep tracks - we all suffer from it.
The only time I've seen a true representation is when you can also see a car on the flat at the bottom of the hill and compare it to the angle of the car trying to get up the hill :)

ProjectDirector

A good way to show the track angle is to take the photo of car side on and having the camera level (horizontal).

Toward the top part of the track is where I ran into trouble. Took a bad line which didn't help and just became to rocky and steep, I started bouncing across the track and guy behind me told me to stop as it didn't look good in terms of rolling. Had to winch four times up until I could get to a "flat" spot to turn and go back down. If I had lockers I think it would have made it. Lockers and tune is next on the list. The guy behind me in the prado didn't attempt it after me

Lol, funny that ay... I've experienced that a coupla times, where I get stuck all the other brands are happy to poke fun but then wont give it a go to back it up! Agreed though, TC in a 90 doesn't seem to do the same job as a locker should. Lockers are on the list for mine as well.

Finally got to get away on a holiday trip with my Deef after 3 years of ownership. Love the vehicle in so mny ways, short drives, long drives, off road fun and also mountain bike shuttling on some wicked off roads.

She has no name as such except for "The Deef".

Here she is from Barrington Tops, such a majestic place which I shall return and explore further one day. Quite lucky to get 3 days of fine weather and then a cloud (with rain) sat atop the mountain for the next two.

Finally got to get away on a holiday trip with my Deef after 3 years of ownership. Love the vehicle in so mny ways, short drives, long drives, off road fun and also mountain bike shuttling on some wicked off roads.

Love seeing this defender parked at bunya all the time! I always seem to be in the other car/motorbike when you're loading/unloading though!

Project Director, it was bliss the first night there, not much sound except peace and forrest! Also was happy to change that standard white patina to a little more to the brown side...

Always wanted one deep bronze green but oh well. May paint the roof in that later.

Wagon Boy, usually my missus out there riding as it is her daily driver while I'm at work. However weekends, time play for me on the MTB. I will have to keep an eye out when you go by and if you wave, I will understand and return the gesture:D

This is video of one part of the Jenkin link track. It captures how steep it was, and this was the easy bit!

Here's my 110.Most of the big stuff has been done.
I want a rear locker and exploring stronger axels, and fitting Mulgo Gull wing rear panels.
Fully sound proofed and with Recaros fitted, it's very comfortable.
Best wishes all.
