Is that the one out behind the camping area down in Lane Poole?

It was near what was marked on the map as a fire tower. When we got to the tower it no longer exists. About 15km from the Nanga campsites.

I don't know the area that well from a 4wd perspective but we were also with our son who doesn't know as much as he thinks he does so we were keeping it relatively simple.

On my way back from Fraser. In Dubbo currently. 9 hours of driving left. Fraser is an awesome place. Couple things from the trip. Busted another rear shocker 5 minutes off the barge. Old man emu is ****. Second time. 20000 km on them. That's two trips they have put a dampener on. Il have to look into some other shockers.
Tried to see as much as we could without rushing around. Got to all the main spots. I hate the inland tracks especially in a Swb. Potholes and dips are very very annoying to drive. Driving along the water is awesome. Went to the top as far as the rocks and decided not to do it as we didn't need more trouble with the 90 if I was bouncing all over the place. Personally I would have done it easily but I had my mrs with me and then was not the time for heroics. The last night we had an aboriginal group dance and tell story's for us and a bunch of back packers on the beach under the stars with a fire. It was an amazing experience. Anyhow here are some picture:

Put sand ladders on the D90. Was going to put on each side but decided 2 on driver's side at this stage. Used solid rubber doorstops to lift off the body and 8mm bolts. Thule 527 locking knobs will go onto the 8mm bolts once they arrive.

...the car is very smooth with lots of low down torque ..very drivable. I originally had the Alive tune through Brice Davis but succumbed to the extra HP (170AB) BAS was offering and with the 170ab the larger intercooler is a must. I also wanted the BAS2 RRC tool to keep an eye of the truck without going to BD or LR for that matter. That is how I justified this purchase to "myself" :)

Hi dazzler,
Out of curiosity do you run an egt gauge?
Id love to know how the tunes compare.
I've got the Alive tune through BD, also run a decat and Alive cooler.

Hi Nando,

Sorry I dont, all I can go by is the coolant temp through the HUD plugged directly to the OBD port.

That said I had an interesting observation today. Driving around today(around 40) with the air on full blast I achieved lower coolant temp (86~88). I think this is due the condenser fan forcing more air through the radiator ..hmm

Anyways you are welcome to have a drive if you are curious about the BAS tune.

I bought it standard with 156K on the clock. Has undergone something of a metamorphosis since then. Lifted, locked, protected and lots of fun.

A couple of pics from a recent three month trip up to the Kimberleys (from Brisvegas). The little 90 pulled the rather large camper trailer (close to two tonnes all up) without any issues at all - almost 100% stock (mechanical/suspension) Defender from the factory (airbags fitted in the back springs to help even her up). Lots of camping mods of course, and I wouldn't give up the cruise control addition any time soon. Most of what's on the 90 are ideas I've seen and read on Aulro over the last couple of years - so thanks to all for sparking the 'oo, that's a must have' thoughts - and the hefty bill to match. Of course, if anyone knows how to 'dust proof' a defender... (no need to answer - unless you have the answer).

Great trip and a nice looking camper, what is it...?

Modcon Campers, based in Brisvegas. This is their forward fold number - because who doesn't want a 'lounge room' when out 'camping' (says the boss lady). Although to be honest, waking up on an inner spring queen sized bed every night of an extended trip was a pretty fine experience. Alas, the camper's now up for sale (cheaper to buy and sell than to rent one).

Did a trip dargo-licola over this weekend. Started at blue rag and camped at the trig. The sunset is just amazing there. Next night we camped on the Wonnangatta river at the bottom of Herne spur. One of the boys saw a black snake as I had parked the 90 in the river to shower with the hot water system. The next day the aim was to camp on caledonia river. Started going down from howitt plain we were about 20 minutes in when I busted a shocker on the rear again. I had a spare this time and had a stock height Navara d40 with me who was 4x4ing for the first proper time. So decided to head back to howitt plain rd and camp close to licola on the Wellington river. The Nav was scrapping the underside of everything as soon as we hit caledonia so I made the call due to me not having my more spare shocks, a forecast of thunderstorms and the Nav with no lift. Didn't wanna be climbing out in the rain with the possibility of snapping one or more shocks and recovering the Nav at the same time.

I have now now booked in the 88series long travel koni in for a couple weeks time. The last 3 times I've been 4x4ing I have snapped a shocker. Time to change.

Don't mean to stir up a hornet's nest here but could it be the big tyres and big load you're carrying that's the issue? Or do 90's normally destroy rear shocks? I know in my 110 I never had a drama with my OME shocks over many many kms but I ran standard wheels/tyres. Maybe you're just doing more difficult off road stuff? Just interested is all [wink11]

These are are the things I've been told it is;

bushes are not good on ome, angle of rear shocker and it's mount is no good, no rear sway bar, shocker not long enough for down travel.

ARB know of the issue as they had the same one on their disco that they raced. They had to change the rear mount position and install longer shocks.

I don't buy the bigger tyre excuse or even the no sway bar excuse. Bushes and angle of shocker are the main reason I believe.

The angle of the top pin is not the best but it has been on that angle since 1970 something with the rrc and coil suspension , the bushes should be rubber as they are more compliant and the angle compounds this requirement .
On a stock set up the shock also serves as the limiting strap which isn't the best either as you have found out.
I've never snapped a rear shock either but if you consider the above points I can see how you have.
Maybe a limiting strap might prevent it happening again.
Or longer shocks but that opens up another few issues.
I hope you solve it once and for all.

Yesterday I did Ellis track in Gladysdale. Along on the trip were;

two GU's double locked 35s
GQ 35s no lockers 4.2td
60 series chopped 35s rear locker

40mm of rain was forecast so to say I was a little worried would be an understatement.

Hit the track and tried doing the hard lines one of the GUs was persisting with one difficult section and busted a hub. We were only 20 minutes in. That was the end of his day. Turned back.
Next was the gq on this section but decided to take the 'easier' route. Greasy as all hell and with no lockers he wasn't getting anywhere. He also made the track 20xs worse for me as he made it like an ice rink with all his attempts. We winched him up as he had no winch and then I had to winch up as well. From there we took hard lines as much as we could but with that much rain some sections were just not going to happen. Then we got to the bit where the gq ass fell into a rut. The 60 was in front and was battling to get to the next section as it just became real greasy. I was behind the gq and double locked and not moving. The gu had winch, and lockers stop working. All this at once. Then we got a message from the 60 series saying the GU and gq that had passed us, well, the GU was on its roof. We parked the trio who were all in our own little dramas and went to see what was going on up ahead. We somehow managed to walk there slipping and sliding everywhere and we came across the GU on its roof and the worst spot possible to recover which was in a walled out section of the track. The two vehicles were running 37s and beadlocks. We spent the next couple hours winching it down past the walls so they could try and put it on it's wheels. It was mangled. After that we went back to the three of us and decided we should probably turn back as they were still recovering and it was going to take forever to get to even them. So I winched the gq out and we headed back down. Going down was probably harder then going up. A lot of sliding and no control in sections. I must say the puma 1LO is amazing. Walked most of it. Had to avoid one ridiculous line down and had to cross basically 2 lines to get to the easy one. That in itself was very hard but with great spotters we all got across.

Easily the the best day trip I've done. Epic

Ive seen chains used,, many, many years ago not long after I first started 4x4ing. The guy did more damage to the track than I've ever seen. I told him at the time, if your going to go joy riding with chains on,, perhaps you should just get yourself a bulldozer.

When I was installing the Front Coils & Shocks, I measured the Shock open length and compared to what I was quoted from EFS's Catalogue. To my disappointment, the open length was exactly the same between the old and new. So, I rang the place I obtained them from and chatted with the fella and he suggested trying some shocks from the Front of a 80's Cruiser. The open length of those were 615mm open and closed 365mm.

I've installed them and they suit perfectly with the Les Richmond Coils I bought. Even at full extension the coils are still being retained by the shock but I've also got much more travel now as well..... happy days.

Only issue now is that I've got speed wobbles between 80>90km/hr. I've got a new steering dampener fitted too. There was a small amount of speed wobble b4 the install but nothing that concerned me. After the install it's definitely been magnified so will need to find the problem and fix it.....

Open to people's ideas of what it may be and possible solutions......

Hit Cobaw on Monday to do a proper test of the new suspension. What a difference. Not much wheel lifting going on especially in the rear which was the worst part before whilst going down hill. Spring rates are bang on the money. Also completed Alcorns track which was the reason that made me go to a 35 last time I was there on 33s. Could not complete it last time. This time it was one run through. Also the puma 1LO is amazing. Crawled everything. Absolutely stoked with my suspension. Was there with a jeep on 37s and Dana 60's and I did Alcorns easier then him 😊

or was it waiting for the patrols to finish sections? Both times I've been with patrols. That track doesn't suit patrols for some reason.

Before Easter we went on a 14 day shakedown trip in our 1990 Army LR. Certainly tested out ability of corrugations to find the weak spots. In our case it was a clutch master cylinder circlip and the flange shaft nylock nut inside the handbrake assembly needing some TLC. The Tough Dog shockies were solid gold. The Hankooks also.
Started down in the Kozzy Nat. Park, then west to Wentworth, Old Renmark road into SA (145km dirt), then north to Flinders, Innaminka (487km dirt), the Dig Tree, east to Cunnamulla Qld, south east through NSW back to ACT. We did plan on visiting Cameron Corner but the master cylinder problem meant we went to Innaminka and head back eastwards to civilisation on the Boulia Dev road which is bitumen.

Really enjoyed the video, thanks. Reminded me of our times in some of those areas.
Interested to see you're happy with the Tough Dogs and Hankooks as both are on my shopping list.
Can I ask was it hard to get the TD shocks with the right valving for the Landy? Did the sidewalls on the Hankooks hold up OK?

The shocks are straight from the catalogue, adjustables, (F) BMX 1049. (R) BMX 1398. Helper coils in the rears (RRC3266 from Karcraft Syd).
12 month build up incl. pwr steer, rear discs (KLR), turbo (KLR), HD clutch (KLR), exhaust (KLR), winch mount (KLR), dual batts, diff guards, recon. LT95, radiator, Gwyn Lewis turrets, blah blah... and the Raptor replacement main clocks (dash) are here now awaiting the job incl. Td5 sensor speedo.

As for the Hankook Dynapro MT $200 tyres. Wow. They were fitted 8 weeks back: they were new when we left. We put a 4 in cut in a sidewall somewhere on Skytrek SA. It didn't balloon so we kept it on for the Strzelecki and Qld and western NSW - ie, completed another 2000 or so km to get home. Its still on the vehicle, no probs, I'm just too busy. I'll change it out before the next trip I suppose.

edit - should add that at Skytrek we did not air down. Maybe thats why we caught a sharp boulder edge. Ran 350kps the whole trip. (It was our first outback trip)

Local seller on gumtree. Ours was used, a 2012 airlander. They were also at the LR Expo.

We sprayed it with green plasti-dip to match up but also to protect from tree swipes on tracks. Maggiolina Airlander + Grand Tour (AutoHome car rooftop tents) - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38qP6904uk0)

Nearly 4yrs on its been a great journey with my Defender. Starting in Malaysia with lots of jungle adventures, now in Australia and hopefully the journey will continue through more great family fun and adventures ... below a little pictorial story of the 4yrs just past.

So this was a nearly 4yrs ago when I picked up my MY2013 DCPU brand new from Land Rover Malaysia...
124091

Lots of great camping trips into the Malaysian rainforest jungles, even some volunteer flood relief work... Simple camping: Just stretch a tarp off the back or side of the vehicle and sleep on the ground, maybe family in the tub and me under the vehicle, or all on stretchers...
124092 124093 124095 124096 124097

Then "transported" a little unlike so many older british subjects....to a new life in Sydney. Pictured here being delivered to me in Sydney just 2 days ago (co-incidently a very similar photo composition to the 4yo "brand new vehicle delivery" photo above).
124094
The journey, of course, doesn't end here on entry to Australia. Looking forward to meeting a lot of you blokes and lots of Oz bush adventures in the coming years....

Went for the first time to Mt. disappointment today. Good spot to wheel. I for some reason thought it wasn't. Did one section called the widow maker. We did it going down. Super steep and two rock ledge sections off camber. Very hairy. Hadn't been wheeling in a couple months so it was great to get out there again.

In saying that they rub a little bit its not that bad. Im tempted to get bigger arches but dont really like the way they look. For now it stays as is.

Great looking rig mate. What size tyres are they? 265/75/16?

thanks very much - i love that car more than a human baby (to quote figure skater Chazz Michael Michaels).

Yes and they fitted no prob at factory height with only the slightest rub at full lock before adjusting the stops

Hi Mitch,
Diabolical corrugations rattled the bolts out. Root cause according to the chaps at rovertech was that it's taken a hit in that corner at some point. New parts installed but not torqued or threadlocked.

Needless to say i'm seriously unimpressed with the lying little toad i bought if off in sydney and also the entirely useless RAC inspection. In future i'd get a prospective purchase to a decent landrover specialist, but that's hind sight for you i guess.

It was on day 1 of a 10 day trip. Fortunately we were travelling with another vehicle and were lucky to find a rolled disco only a couple of hours drive away, which i was able to procure the caliper bolts from. Could have been a real holiday-breaker.

Have yet to see any other dual cab (or single cab for that matter) defender ute since I arrived in Sydney last October.

Would love to to see another dual cab. (Your ex would be a bonus!)

In Australia, traybacks started to replace utes fifty years ago, and Landrover utes as opposed to traybacks, have been quite rare since the 1980s if not earlier. Add to this that Landrovers have been largely replaced as working vehicles by Jap vehicles in the same period, the lack of utes is hardly surprising.

The other day I parked my Defender in a car park on a slope. When I was walking back to car park, I was horrified to see Landy down the hill on the other side of the car park! What no handbrake, not in gear!? ....Then as I moved rapidly closer, I realised it was another almost identical 110! Mine hadn't budged. Relief! A strange and rare occurrence.

Hey Zeros,

Climbing up and down isn't an issue, at the moment I just use a milk crate as a step up but soon I plan on having some cabinetry in the back so will use that as a step instead.

Daniel had the job done in 5 days, dropped off on a Monday and picked her up on Friday afternoon.

Thanks Damo, so off a milk crate you pull yourself up with your arms? Or you're high enough to get your hip up onto bed?

A week is excellent turn around. ...sounds like I might need to book a week in Sydney! 😊

I bought my fender around a year ago and am loving it, had all the chequer plate on it when I bought it. Apparently the follow who originally owned it was sick of his doors getting dings in shopping centre car parks, so the chequer plate and side rails went on.
Does anyone know the vehicle at all, any other history.

Unfortunately I don’t get to use it ,I have a work car, wifeys disco,my ute project and a 65 workshop 11a and it will be up for sale soon.
Although I have told my wife that in 2015,2016, and now in 2017.

Picked up our first Defenfer a couple of weeks ago. 26k km on the clock and a great runner!

Now to plan the accessories!

We're thinking roof racks, tow bar, side steps (already ordered) at first.

The previous owner has upgraded the stereo already which was #1 priority otherwise

Stopped on the roadhouse on the way to Cooloola beach for camping, we went to Swan gully 4 wd park a few days before and notices some suspension wobble on the way home. Panhard rod, ( I think that's the name of the rod that locates the front axle side to side) bushes and one bolt was worn and the radius arms bushes were also knackered. I had spare radius arms, and my neighbor was able to press new bushes into the panhard rod, so the steering was nice for the trip. It was not much trouble to fit the new radius arms about 3 hours I think , I did them one at a time.

The airbagman suspension on the back is great I'm amazed how good the ride is, on and off road, I had about 50 psi in the bags, ( normally about 36). We ran 20 psi on the 235/85 ATs for all the sand driving

The disco 2 transfer case is running sweetly, and we're able to keep up with the the traffic on the M1 though with the roof rack on I think the engine will struggle much above 110 km/hr.
At 100 km/h the boost is about 10 psi, at 110 its 14 psi. Noticeably higher than without the roof rack on, EGTs seem to be good though, 400-450 c. (I'm using GPS speeds, my speedo is 10 km/hr optimistic), but I don't see that as an issue 110 k, is my max sustained cruising speed.

The trip was about 600 k , including our beach driving etc, I changed from my aux tank to the main tank at 350 k .

I only saw a few defenders on the beaches, a nice blue defender (looked tdi ish) was at the beach camp ground.

Cheers simmo
