Well I now enter the Defender club, just bought this beauty off Fitzy. It will become my companion in my new life in Tasmania, fishing, camping, farming!

Thanks Fitzy, hope that awesome ute comes along trumps mate! That rig used to be mine! It's already spent some time in Tassie! JC did the clutch master cylinder for me in Hobart [emoji12]

Look st those awesome beasties! A credit to you Summiitt. Is all the running gear original on the Tdi?

Yep, apart from Hy-tuff axles and drive flanges, only on the second clutch, and a rebuild on the injector pump, everything else is original.

Likewise Tim, the camel was an awesome sight. Would have loved to have a crawl over it if it wasn’t for the rain.
What a great spot. We had plenty of fun getting the prado & trailer through. Met a couple of fishos that got their navara within 50m of one if the higher summits at bilbunya, solid effort but literally couldn’t stand up when they got out. They were knee deep in stubbies. TF they didn’t roll etc and need us to sort them out.
Did a good bit of Stokes and Fitzgerald NPs on the way back too. Managed to find all the soft spots.
Will def go in via eyre observatory next time.

Sounds like you guys had a great trip, we turned back after talking to the guy at Eyre who we met at the bottom of the escarpment after he told us of your efforts repairing the track. We have now tried twice to get to Twilight cove, have been to Eyre and East of it but not the cove and hence not along the cliffs West to Baxter memorial so I guess another trip is in order...

No way I would drive up Bilbunya dunes in anything bigger than a Polaris etc... lucky guys... though we did help a gent who had very little fuel and was trying to find the quickest way back to the HWY after travelling in all the way from Esperance, at 1700 and no map, no water and no idea...

Might be taking Camel to W4’s 70th event but have to get back from Madagascar... see what happens.

Picked up a '99 TD5 130 a couple of weeks ago. Almost pulled the trigger on a new Defender about 7 years ago, and ended up buying my first house instead, so this is my first one. Pretty happy with it. 267,000km, in pretty good overall knick for a 20 year old vehicle. Little bit of rust where the windscreen brackets meet the firewall, and some in the bottom of the doors and side steps, but otherwise stands up well so far. It's got an electronic rust protection system already fitted, and it seems this has protected the chassis from anything more serious than a bit of surface rust.

Added a UHF and some MUD seat rails as need the radio for work and I'm on the tall side. Otherwise no plans to do much as a bit short on cash. Seems most of the preventative work has been done by the previous owner. Removed the awning and roof racks it came with, as they were catching on the rear doors.

Drove it from Townsville to Armidale, which was an 18-hour marathon, but the truck drove very well and much better than I expected.

Thanks for the offer of the Nanocom mrb505 - good to know if something goes pear-shaped at some point, cheers [biggrin]

Discomick - As far as the rust goes, not really sure. I bought the vehicle largely unseen, except for some photos. The rust under the windscreen seems to be stemming from the fairly corroded aluminium windscreen brackets which I will replace, and probably won't know the extend of the rust fully until then. As far as I can tell though, it's only minimal. The doors aren't a big deal and I figure I'll pull one of them off in the near future and remove the door cards to see the extent of it. Luckily the Armidale climate isn't particularly conducive to rust (very dry air in winter), so I hope it won't progress too quickly and can address properly in the near future. Have got it garaged now so should also slow it down.

Arrrr the memories.. I had a 1310 with 684 (?) spider drive cam, DCOE Webber’s in the late 70’s. Fastest car on the planet off the lights. When the throats opened it felt like they sucked all the air out of the cabin... :-)

Note:
if the owner is here, you needs to consider re-adjusting the wiper arm to stop the bosch/wide wiper blades from riding the windscreen rubber or it may split :)

This picture really portrays mankind's struggle against taming nature. The cruel dichotomy of the forestry tract, and the serene mountains in the distance show that one cannot simply 'rove land' without overcoming adversity along the way. The desolation of the scene is contrasted with the vibrancy of the vehicle, furthermore enhanced with the orgy of filters applied over the top, in an almost dystopian fashion. The sharp, yet natural lines also highlight this natural discontent in the scene. The foreground log, scarred and abused, is being conquered by the Rover, reminiscent of Ali's pose above Sonny Liston, showing that sometimes mankind can tame nature, but not without a fight.
I give it 4/5 stars. Needs more dragons.

exactly my thoughts behind taking the photo, I was unsure if the Juno filter mixed with a high saturation number would yield such results but alas, it has all come out in your beautiful critique of this photograph. Here is my 130 Tdi project......

Its 95 Model with 500k kms on it. I think I got it cheap enough. It does runs and drives.

It screams on decelerating in 3,4 and 5th. Brakes are not that great. It came from a remote area, so had to get it shipped to Perth. When they picked it up, they broke something..... or maybe it was the owner. I was told there was a loud bang when loading and after that no more drive. It could be a axle flange or something else. They couldn't change the diff lock lever.

Currently sitting in transports yard. I am 4000kms away and wont see it for several months. In the mean time will get some one started on it in WA.

I hope I've done this correctly - I'm not a confident poster!

Attached (I hope!) is a photo of my 1999 tdi CSW driving back from the Kingfisher camp on the Nicholson River in the gulf country a couple of years back. After 30 years of petrol Landrover ownership this is my first diesel and I'm a fan.

And the second photo (if all goes to plan) is my 1984 V8 100. This has been a fantastic car over the last 15 years - and I must admit that, with the exception of deep wading I'd prefer the V8/LT95 combination in really difficult terrain compared with the 300tdi/R380 combination in 1998 vehicle. Of course I'd have used twice the fuel (or had half the range) in the V8!!

Just picked up my first ever LR, 2007 110! Got it checked over by Jordan Tech LR here in Perth who it was in great condition, looks like the previous owner spent money in all the right places. Loving it!! Has plenty of extras so is essentially ready to go. May just add a second battery to keep the Beers cold!

Here is my bus, It's a 1995 Defender 110. It has the 300tdi. Runs on 285/75 r16 tyres on -25 16x8 steel rims on a 50mm lift with extended travel shocks. Features are a full size front mount intercooler tweaked fuel pump, removed silencer exhaust, sill replacement rock sliders, steering guard arb bar with which. Open diffs but heavy-duty axles, raised breathers for everything, snorkel etc. Goes well. 250k on the clock.

Na mine is just a standard 110 wagon but the rear windows removed and then the panels put over to cover off. I had seen it done to a lotof 90s in the uk and liked the idea. It is good in that can load up lots of gear and nice and secure from prying eyes. Can also load up with fire wood and not hve to worry about damaging windows. You can get a '110 utility wagon' so it's pretty much that.

The UK had a factory spec commercial variant for the 90, with solid side panels (extra bracing), not covered over windows.

From your photos its hard to spot the cover over, I thought they were genuine van panels, looks great!

On the inside of the panels in the cargo area I've got some polystyrene foam with adhesive carpet on that which all looks quite tidy as it's pretty much identical colour to roof carpet/lining stuff.

I got it done through British Off-Road on the Sunny Coast. I can’t imagine trying to source things like the rear doors by myself, as even they had enough trouble finding all the bits, and they’ve made a business out of such things!

The canvas tilt has been with it from new. As I'm not the original owner, I'm not sure if it was an option or a standard accessory at the time. The original owner purchased the vehicle from Trivette in Alexandria in 2011. I generally only fit the tilt during the winter although I haven't had a need to this year. I only fit it if I need it just so it doesn't weather too quickly. It's a handy thing to have.

I bought mine new in 2013 and reckon the Galway Green colour is pretty special. Where I bought (Malaysia) there were only two options, Galway Green and a silver colour.

I thought the silver grey would be cooler in the tropical heat but was a bit too "Skyfall" and I liked the Galway Green so much.

The canvas was an optional extra when new here,, and probably still available if you wanted it when we bought ours in 2011. We opted not to get it as we were going for a hard canopy anyway,, although, in hindsight, I wish I'd have got it now.

Very Cool.... how did the Landy handle those conditions?

It was an absolute pleasure. 10,000km in 28 days and about half of that offroad. Travelling with a ford ranger and a prado towing a patriot camper, both very well set up vehicles but obviously the 90 ran rings around them in the rough stuff. Not just in capability, but also practicality - it really was in it's element!

The corrugations were not bad on the gibb or gunbarrel, but the roof rack came loose very early on, which was just a re-tighten which never came loose again.
Mitchell plateau and kalumbaru roads were pretty severe though with extreme corrugations and LH rear brake line suffered a fatigue failure. The steel piping broke away from the inboard nipple above the diff. I noticed the fluid loss early and was able to easily plug it and top up the fluid without needing to bleed it. This is a huge plus on the landy, it's so field repairable. Not sure if there was a stick or something in it that caused it, or just the weight of the line itself vibrating away.
Fortunately i wasn't with the other vehicles at this point and obviously didn't say anything (the LR reliability jokes wear a bit thin sometimes) and drove the next 5000km with 3 brakes, no issue. It pulled up so square that you'd hardly have known it was missing.

The dust was epic, but I had been working on a few mods to keep the truck dust free which worked a treat. Next to no dust inside. Used a snorkel precleaner which caught a lot, haven't checked the airfilter yet.

The highway driving was fine and got good economy.

The river and creek crossings (i lost count of these) were also no problem. Never got hung up or stuck and had no ingress dramas.

The proper offroading (munja track etc) was great and the defender made everyone else look like they'd bought a knife to a gun fight. Absolutely no issues. The worst of it was the tall grass (~90km of it, mostly taller than the car). It made navigation really hard and the constant risk of a concealed rock or stump etc made for very slow going. constantly having to clear it out from under the car wasn't much fun either.

In short it handled it all in it's stride. Conditions were remote, very arduous and just plain hard on the vehicles, and i would not have wanted to drive anything else.

What economy did you manage? IIRC loaded up, on similar roads with reduced pressures, I was getting about 18L/100.

A tail wind day on the highway and got 10.5L/100 on a 115L run
A head wind day on the highway and got 13.5L/100
I ran it about 1500rpm for much of the rough stuff and got about 15L/100
The corrugated roads, especially the sandy stuff (NT end of GCR) added between 1-2 L/100 compared to hwy numbers.

Speeds generally 100 on the hwy or smooth gravel, 80 on the corrugations or rougher unsealed roads depending on conditions

TP: F36psi, R42psi for hwy, F24psi, R30psi for unsealed

Did the telegraph track across the bight earlier this year and got close to 15L/100 for the ~1000km offroad/beach

Hue, the headlights are the JW speaker ones. They are good, but 2 years old now. I feel like there there are cheaper options that perform equally or better available now.

Rob, I put on a wheel carrier to take weight off the rear door, doubled up the back door seal with some 3M “D” strip, spent some time sikaflexing the panel join gaps, sealed the heater ventilation gap aaaand sorted a cabin air filter so I can have positive pressure clean air inside.
It’s the best mod I’ve done. We used to be able to actually see the dust coming in through the vents.
I’ve posted about the filter in the ventilation gap thread earlier this week. There are some photos etc there

Looks like you’re on a fantastic trip! Hows the puma going?

Well as you asked... it went really well through Simpson Desert (east to west, QAA and French lines, trip report to follow when I get time) then up through Central Australia and around to Mt Isa and Longreach. Got flatbedded back from Barcaldine. Engine warning light/limp mode. Still undiagnosed, so it’s going nowhere presently🙁. I’m pretty philosophical about it. It happened on the way home to Brissie and not in the middle of the desert... Oh, the air conditioning also failed as we discovered around Tennant Creek when the right hand dash vent was blowing hot air at me on a 35 degree day. But I still would not have wanted to do the trip and n any other vehicle.

This is our 110, built by Jock the Rock and bought by us earlier this year, already done a stint on the big island towing our offroad van (now sold), and it has been a fantastic vehicle, it has a 4bd1 turboed and intercooled, LT95, Detroit Truetrac in the rear, ARB locker in the front, Hy-Tuff axles etc etc. Really well set up by Jock.
We have put in Renalt Scenic rear seats, utilising thier functionality by making a frame as per the original vehicle, so 30 second clip in and out, with a floor section to replace rear seats and having a flat platform in the rear in under a minute. Overall we are very happy 😃

Cool and thanks.....ill look into what effort is required to do something similar on mine although I see there looks to be an addition sheet of ally on the roof??

Love all the different ideas that pop up.

I tried to get Aul-cab to look into some options for bike carriers and some changes to the 270 awning but between Aus and RSA it just went round and round in circles. I couldn’t even by my quick pitch awning through them, Drifta came to the rescue.

The quick pitch/Alu Cab guys in Perth have given excellent service highly recommend them.

The Alu Cab is an entirely new roof and very strong, i already had an ostrich wing awning that they fitted without issue, somewhat heavier than the Alu Cab one, they made custom brackets at minimal cost.

I tried Perth importer/owner with no better luck than the Brisbane agent wasn’t overly helpful.

Interesting you went the ostrich 270, thought they would have given you a keen price on one of their own.

Greenbottle at Mungo. He's Feb 2014 build in Keswick Green. Bruce Davis has done a tune upgrade with larger intercooler, new brain etc. The extra torque makes towing an A'Van ALiner effortless. Greenie sports a Terra Firma winch bar, Warn 9000 lb winch, pair of Lightforce 75 Watt HID's. At the rear a Rijidij bumper and twin wheel carrier and hopper windows. Brown & Davis auxiliary fuel tank of 75 litre cap. Rear seats removed to accommodate a false floor, stowage and Waeco fitment. Removed the Land Rover driver's seat and installed a Recaro LS I've had in various cars since 1986. Fitted out with Codan NGT HF, 1/Icomm and 1/GME UHF sets. Telstra full power and TXRX enhanced cradle kit for the T90 Tough phone. Inmarsat on board for phone comms when out of mobile range.

Reckon I passed this whilst heading north up the Hume a couple of weeks ago.

That may have been me, in my remarkably similar orange ex-rfs 130 - we headed from Sydney to Canberra during the first week of the school holidays.

So we're at British Off Road with the Defender and they offer us a loan car, so I ask if we can have this one in their car park, but no, we get a Freelander. Oh well.
