Ooops, only saw your location after I posted. It will definitely be the same aux tank, but I'm not sure LR Australia will be as agreeable.

After four services and a couple of warranty visits they haven't had anything to say about mine....yet;)

I also have the water tank on the other side.

Are they tubed Michelins on tubed Wolf rims ?

Nope, tubeless, on the heavy-duty (Wolf-look-alike there still seems to be some confusion) rims as shipped on the Puma 130 by LR Aust.

Are the tyres tubed or tubeless? Do the rims say anything like tubed or tubeless? Do they have a safety lip on the inside? It's a raised lip on the inside area of the rim. ( I think:confused:)

PC3, those rims of yours are labelled "Steel Heavy Duty" in the options list of UK Defenders. They are standard on vehicles aimed at hard work ie all 130s and pickup spec 110s. Pickup and hard top spec 90s have a lighter duty wheel with a slightly different pattern.

They obviously look very very similar to Wolf wheels but the wall thickness on a genuine military Wolf wheel is immense and they weigh an absolute ton (not really but you get the idea!).:)

Cheers!

Looking at getting one myself in September this year. Are you happy with yours? Have you had any dramas with it?

Hi nathangee,

I picked mine up in April and the only annoying thing was an unusual problem according to landrover, the door lock surrounds would pop up and sometimes out altogether when I unlocked the door with the remote. Took it in and they seem to have fixed it and replaced the one I lost!
Very happy with my dealers service department.

If you understand what you are buying, ie, a sometimes quirky vehicle and your needs are met by a deefer, I would highly recommend them. I'm really happy with mine and can't wait to finish the fit out for the trip up north in August/Sept.:twobeers:

May get to pick my 130 up tommorow the tray builder will get it painted hopefully. I have hound cages built in to mine but there good for locking gear up when not carrying dogs. I have opted for a 2.2 metre tray this was a big draw card for me the fact you can have decent tray on the rover dual cab compared to the jap twin cabs

Hi All,

Pictures of my previous 90s.

1st and 2nd Pictures is my '96 I worked and travelled with in South/Central Africa. The 2 pictures were on a road construction job in Zambia. My first love :D and 318 000km of remarkably trouble free running!

The 3rd picture is of my '94 I bought as an weekend run about. In 2006 she only had 42 000 miles on the clock! Unfortunately some ###### stole it from in front of my house...

The 4th and 5th pictures are of my last 90 in the UK a '98 pictured next to my friends 110. These pictures were taken on a club weekend in the Welsh Valleys in late summer! Before and after is obviously swapped round...

I have now joined the IT crowd with my new Puma 90:D and I'll post some pictures as the list of accessories grows!

Cheers,

Lourens

G'day Naks

Good to see people touring in a Defender 90. I see you have a Front Runner auxiliary fuel tank on the right hand side. How have you found it? Any problems with ground clearance? Do you also have a left side tank? I ask because I am think about getting them myself. I am not aware of any other auxiliary tank option for a D90 other than carrying jerry cans and they take up a lot of room in a little truck.

Cheers

Karl, we bought the landy mainly for touring, not off-roading, so ground clearance is not really an issue for us.

We only have the one on the right-hand side and so far no issues whatsoever. We also carry one jerrycan on top, that's our 'emergency' fuel.

Thanks Naks

Like you I have just returned from a trip in my D90. In my case 6,000 km in 21 days. I carried one 20 L jerry can of fuel plus 50 L of water (two 20 L and one 10 L). Gas bottle was inside (in a plastic bucket). Carried the tent on the roof (though not a roof tent like you: no concern with large carnivores in Australia). G'day,

Hope you are securing your load or have a cargo barrier. Heavy items hurt. I would not have a gas cylinder inside the car. Did this a couple of years ago.,Had the cylinder filled while in Broome, put it in the car and drove a litltle and did the tourist thing. Came back to the car to discover that the cylinder pressure valve failed. Guy who filled the cylinder had stripped the thread. Result is a car full of lpg. This could have ended in tradgedy. If you can put your cylinder on the roof.

nice side steps, where did they come from?

LRA. They are one of the few good extras.

I had them fit the snorkel (or "raised air intake" as the poms call it), the steps and the tow bar.

ARB are fitting the bar and winch with plasma rope.

Local auto guy is trying to figure out how to fit 2 batteries into the battery compartment. He normally fits 2 ok, but they are smaller than what I want.

Ordered an Ex-Box (http://www.mulgo.com.au/p13_Mulgo-Ex-Box.html) to put the radio bases in.

Mikey, Looks like you, me, Brid and PC3 all took delivery in June. Am confirming PC3, but so far a few of us have various rattles and revving/hesitation issues. Might be coincidence, or might be a batch thing.

If you have any of these issues please describe your symptoms on those threads.
See:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/107434-puma-transfer-casefree-play.html

and...

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/107395-just-ticked-over-400kms-rattle-developed-today-engine-shutdown.html

If there is an issue it may be easier to gain progress with the dealers if we coordinate feedback/action. I hope they are simple fixes but we won't know till they get to the dealer.

Same with any other newbies...

Barra, Its a custom built plate alloy boat by Fisher. 5.2m, 140hp 4 stroke suzuki - goes like a cut cat. They are a great boat - self draining hull, 6mm plate bottom gives a great ride.

Anyway, dont want to detract from the defender talk with boat talk since the thread is all about showing off cars. But you are right - I think it looks pretty good being towed by a defender.

Interesting.

I was specifically told by ARB that the new defender bar was designed with the recovery points as shown in my last photo.
They even sold me the rated shackles to fit.

I have had a close look at the size of the steel around where the shackles fit and the bar is certainly strengthened there.

Also, I was impressed at the way the bar is fitted to the chassis.
I have no qualms about recovering from those points using a bridle.

That said... I am of course VERY interested in what others who have this new bar think.

well its a 110 td5, start off its got some MTRs 265/75 on the aloys with 3" of flexy holding up the body off the ground, running extended shocks for the nice flex, got a LR front bar with a set of narvas, around the side its got some custom 4mm sliders with extended tree protectors and a snorkel, at the back its got work and reverse lights up on the roof, with recovery points at both ends for getting them nissans out https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/07/433.jpg

inside its got upgraded sound sys allround with built in sub box mounted to the cage at the back, and the amp mounted to the rear draw sys in the boot, allso the mount for the freage an more power outlets direct to the battery, on the cage inside iv mounted head rests for the rear pass and to try and keep that aircon working nice,

Hi johncat07, I was thinking about mounting a spare tyre on the b/bar. Does it affect engine cooling at all?

johncat07
4th August 2010, 07:34 PM
pirasea mounting the spare there doesn't effect cooloing at all. there's about 300mm between tyre and grill. i drove this from parramatta n.s.w to tully f.n.q in a marathon drive. pretty much 23hrs straight drive, no problems at all.

KarlB
4th August 2010, 08:02 PM
There are other issues that you may need to consider with mounting a spare on the bullbar other than cooling. Most importantly, the weight the spare in that position (so far forward), is likely to have a significant impact on your suspension, probably greater than a standard winch mounting. It may also be considered an illegal protrusion from the bullbar and while you may simply put one on and get away with it, your problem is if you are in an accident, especially if some one is seriously injured or killed.

gday fellas,

I've got a '96 130 TDi...............

she just chugs along.......had some big fat ProComp wheels on it when I got her, went back to the std rims and BFG Muddies, more of what I'm used to.

Back in the early 70's had a Ser1 ragtop shorty with what we called back then 'jeep service' tyres..........went damn near everywhere until the back axles broke (frequently) carried spares and could change in short order.

Had Ser11 & 111 in the Army and its nice to see the Army still uses Deefers now.

recently spent a few bob on new back axles for the 130 and a set of side steps/rock sliders (helps an old fella git into the damn thing !)

the 130 with spare mounted on front was a fitment by whomever supplies the n.s.w government with the fire birgade kit for the 130. most of the c.f.a's vechiles trucks or 4x4's have the tyre fitted on the bullbar. i've registered the vechile now in queensland and the inspection station did not pull it up, nor did the police officer checking the vin/engine # they like it, both landrover guys no doubt. as for handling goes the 130 has the most responsive steering of all the vechiles i've driven, especially the telstra kitted patrol i currently drive of which 2 spares are fitted on back of service body. if it's dangerous for the spare on the front, so should it be on the rear. it is still exposed and quite capable of becoming a missile or 2 in an accident.

Treads
10th August 2010, 07:17 PM
We've got a few Deefers still in our RFS fleet. At least one has the spare on the bullbar, and the rest are on the bonnets. It's not like a 235/85 has sharp protrusions, so I don't see how it could cause a danger to pedestrians

KarlB
10th August 2010, 08:11 PM
I am certainly not saying that the spare mounted on the bullbar is illegal. I am just suggesting it may be. Indeed it has been suggested else where on this forum that even a winch hawse mounted on a bullbar may be illegal. Certainly those little tube things to hold fishing rods that you often see on bullbars are illegal. I would also be surprised that the vehicle passing registration makes a bullbar mounted spare legal though you may be able to mount a defence on that basis. I would think you would have to ask specifically about the mounting and receive a yes answer (preferably in writing) to be certain. A registration inspectors ignorance or omission would not be a sound defence. Also, I would suspect that the registration of a fire appliance (as for a military vehicle) may not require the same compliance as a privately registered vehicle. To repeat, I am not say aye or nay. I am just saying you need to be careful.

Cheers

PC3 she's a 110 ute, I'm still waiting for bullbar, scrub bars and sidesteps to turn up so she's not finished yet.

They certainly are different i got mine new in 98.
The fuel ecomnomy is amazing.
Has had a few little anoying little things happen -but they are the ultimate farm ute -esp in wet or rough conditions.
Jump into the latest Jap (well se asian ) rubbish with waterboots and a dizza bone and see how long the interior lasts.Or getting fencing wire or sticks out of the fronts end of a IFS vehicle.
Im afraid lightly built IFS stuff is never going to cut it when the going gets tough

Similar scenario

I have a temp sender fitted to the head on the Landy. It used to run at around 82 degrees constantly. I fitted a set of Lighforce 240 Blitz lights to the bar and it increased head (engine) temps by 5-6 degrees with an increase when towing heavy loads.

Got the graphics made up at a garage. Cost about 138 AUD to get them made and put on. I like them but some people do not like them on the Puma as it makes it look like an older vehicle. I would have no bother getting them done for you and posting them over. They are done in layers, a base layer, the mid layer then the Defender name. You need a very steady hand to put them on, I just watched. Other graphics on her are her name ZULU located towards the rear of the vehicle, TDCI over a small Zulu near the front wheel arches. There is a Defender name on the front below the bonnet and Zulu on the back. If you want more details or want me to get them done for you and post them over let me know. You might be able to get them over in AUS but if not you can contact me.

Hi Everyone,

I realised that I love browsing at other peoples Defenders so it's only fair that I post mine.

She's a 2003 TD5. I've only had it a couple of months and have added the following:
OME suspension (30mm front, 10mm rear)
Nitrocharger Sport shockies
Snorkel
GME uhf
Window tinting
Removed EGR valve ...what a difference, money well spent!!
Recovery points on front
Front diff guard
Dual batteries (D44 carrier, two yellow optimas and Redarc isolator)
IPF headlight inserts and wiring harness
IPF spotties
Turbo timer
New a-frame balljoint and bushes
New rear axles and flanges
Covered as much of the interior with that sticky foil back flashing tape to help with the noise and it made an awesome difference

New to the site and love it. So impressed with the wealth of knowledge available here and all the people out there willing to give so others can benefit from their wisdom.

I once owned a 2002 TD5 that I loved it to death but stupidly sold it and regretted it ever since. The remedy is a new one so I have attached some pictures of my new love, a 2010 Pumu – and I can’t get the “SEG” off my face every time I drive it. It’s my “play” car but find myself getting in it every day for the drive to work and back.

I loved my old TD5 but I think the Puma is a better car– so far only 5K done in it and other than the wipers stoping where ever you turn them off (usually half way up the windscreen) I can’t fault the thing – its perfect. Very capable off road as was my old one, quieter and the new 6 speed gear box is a delight. 1st low is great for going down those steep hills or crawling over rocks etc...

So far done the dual batteries, ARB bar, 12,000 lb Warn endurance wince, Icon UHF, F&R ARB lockers (have the compressor mounded on the chassis rail under the passenger seat with a air line to the rear so I can pump all 4 car tyres (Cooper STT) as well as the camper tyres. Snorkel, Alpine car radio with BT for the phone, VMS navigator (Brilliant bit of gear) as well as reversing camera and lights and all sorts of odds and sods.

I have a Mulgo box and made a custom cubby with switches for the lockers, compressor, winch isolation switches and other bits and pieces.

Few more things to do – like rock sliders and long range tanks – maybe some bigger tyres one day for the hard trips.

Overall – love the car, love driving it, love this forum and want to thank all of you who take the time to help others.

Now, just to get these pictures published....

Hi all,

Picked up my 07 Puma a couple of weeks ago (27/09), since then I've done about 4,500ks, Melbourne -> Broken Hill -> Sydney -> Bathurst -> Sydney -> Broken Hill

Very happy, it cruises well, is comfortable, Shonky rang me while I was driving - he was impressed that we could actually converse using speaker phone!

I've had a few issues, being a leaking vacuum pump and a broken after market wheel carrier (Fitted by previous owner.), but I must say I've only got positive things to say about Melbourne Land Rover, in particular Darren Barnett the sales rep I dealt with.

Trivetts in Parra sorted the pump under warranty, and MLR are going to replace the Wheel Carrier.

Still got a few things to do, ARB Bar, Winch, IPF lights, cargo barrier, drawer - the list continues!

And thanks to all who waved while I was in Sydney!

Took the Defender for a run around the back of Licola in the Victorian High Country yesterday. Most tracks were opened up this weekend past. I was doing a pre-trip for a 4X4 club trip I am running in November to the area.

The photographs were taken on top of Mt Wellington. You should get 180 degree views from here. It was 4 degrees C., trying to snow and around 4 car lengths visibility. It got worse than this later!

I am hoping for better when I run my trip.

G'day Lokka!

Been a long time mate ... we met at Matt ( Aces ) Birthday when you all came down to camp a few years back - I rode with Cal and his lady and later on with Disco Dave when we went up the rock stairs at Mt you know what. :D

Anyway, it is out of rego right now ... I just drove it back from Qld yesterday the full 1000K's on a permit ( Got Class 22 CTP etc ) so now it is home and the next job is to get the Blue Slip and rego. I had to get it Engineered in NSW for the modifications to dual cab, tray back and also the engine mod.

It needs new head lights and replacement gear box mounts but apart from that it got a clean bill of health from the pre purchase inspection in Qld. We drove past your neck of the woods on the way down but not knowing exactly where you were ... otherwise we would have loved to stop by.

Your tray cab is a 130 isn't it mate?

Thanks Chis ... my rig got quite a bit of attention on the drive down from Qld, what with the blokes holding stop/slow lollipops at road words chatting to us about the truck - to people at servo's taking time to walk around the vehicle when we'd pull in to get gas. The big shock though was we saw dozens of Land Rovers on the trip down but only got one wave in 1000K's driving ... from a Defender driver no less!

None of the Disco or Rangie drivers waved ...

Cheers, Simon.

Vlad,

Don't fret mate, I am a born Queenslander ... so the truck is still with a banana bender, just down south for now. ;)

Yes ... the truck was bought from a bloke who used to live in Redcliffe, he doesn't live there anymore though.

Best, Simon.

G'day Everyone,
I have fitted up a draw system to the Defender which is good in most ways but probably makes it a little more diffieclt to fit some items such as my Southern Cross tent. Might have to add some framework to the draw system.

Also made up a fridge support which fits my Engel fridge which is hard to find space for in the Defender. I had already made rough drawings for my design before I saw the post from Daniel with his design drawings so I don't think I am pinching any of his ideas.

My welding is rough but I think it will stand the test of time. It was a little fiddly getting the correct height measurements as I had the draw system to consider. I also wanted to try to keep as much rear movement of the passenger side seat as well as being able to open and access the fridge easily. I will see how it goes next weekend on a trip to the Victorian High Country.

Will have to get a cargo barrier made as well.

Almost forgot to mention. Flew from Canberra to Brisbane to pick up the 130 which would be fully serviced and a 5 year warranty.

Drove the short trip north to Woodford Folk festival by which time the passenger seat belt had frozen up completely. Found a standard replacement part in Repco that fitted straight in, $50 on special.

Great Festival, highly recommended. 4 Days of Guinness and music, click but no rumble, starter motor problem. Eventually resorted to a good whack which fixed it.

A five day trip home trying to find a high spot to park for a roll start, resorting to the universal fine adjustment tool when necessary! Anyway, repaired on warranty no cost.

As the warranty required 5000km services with a registered mechanic, and I like to do my own work I decided to let it lapse - bad mistake.

Changed all the fluids including gearboxes and diffs all seemed fine. Heading to Victoria for a 60th birthday and the gearbox started making unhealthy sounds. Just made it home, ordered a replacement from the very helpful blokes at All Four by 4 in Kotara. $2100 and five days off and on to swap it out.

Next a bit of a rumble develops, check the wheel bearings to find one almost collapsed and two of the nuts seized to the shafts! Back on the phone to All Four by 4 and new sets now safely installed.

Can't be much left to surprise, engine runs very sweetly.

Love the Defender but it does help to be mechanically minded!

Now to get into camping in some seriously inaccessible spots and there are plenty around Canberra.

Here is a pic of my 02 Defender 130 at work. This spring was very wet as can be seen by the clover 3 foot tall. Now paddock mostly covered by thistles. Had 10 years of drought so the pasture was very degraded.
130 has Obieco tray, LR bull bar, warn winch, tinted windows, HR tow bar and IPF HID spot lights.

Not sure if I have uploaded pic correctly.

Here,s a few piks of our plod thru the high country this week.

touch wood, defer performed faultlessly ,bar interior dust ingestion.......of which i have conceded defeat:cry:. Front heavy duty springs i fitted 3000k ago have settled in and am very happy with the lift / ride and handling they have provided.. they have made a significant difference all round.

swampy plains & murry river provided the first significant fording tasks for the wagon ,of which both were running fast and averaging 2:1/2 feet + or so,,suprisingly no water ingress considering height ,,, seals must be hydrophobic :) but dust particle friendly!. Still have,nt fitted snorkel and shoving my head out the window reveals more scope for greater depth crossing with std intake particularly with driver on d/stream side, allways reluctant to take anything on, thats borderline with my girls in the vehicle.

mt pinnabar tk and surrounding tks r in very good nik , i have been poking round there for 30 yrs and its the best ive seen these trails, new route on btm section of pinnabar tk cuts out the steep gnarly section,, which is a shame but the parks must cater for idiots i suppose ,shame because it always provided an injection of adreniline when attemting particularly on a flat twin bmw adv bike:o.

stopped into yarrongabilly caves , have been here a few times over the years,,but never taken a guided tour of one of the closed caves , allways just done the self guide cave this time we handed over the folding stuff and did,,,;jersey cave ; ,very impressive and well woth the look...thermal pool near river still a treat but the walk back up to car means arriving in a lather.this time of year!!

Davis plain tk was unexpectantly closed at buckalong ck end , from storm debris over tk i believe.Rocky plain camp ground is one i have driven past all my life ,never bothering to inspect,,,,,, very pretty spot , bush style camp , with just a drop crapper,, and a small brook near by, , this site will go into the accom log.
bluff fall west of corryong def woth a visit ,with the walk to lookout above falls , top shelf........cheers

It's a Richbrook, got it 2nd hand off someone else who sold his Td5. He imported it from the UK.

Have a look here (http://www.defender2.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=55437#55437) for the various types of steering wheel people have fitted to their Pumas.
