The only thing that was depressing was the fact that I was getting hung up on my diffs (mostly the rear....Salisbury ) when the patrols on their 33s and the Hilux on 31s where getting through.... (I have 32s) Definitely making me want to get 35s under it when I go out to play to get the diffs up higher.... Mind you I walked up all the steep and rocky crap a lot cleaner than all of them :D!!!!

Just quietly - Run a hose over the alternator, radiator and around the starter motor :)

@harris7 - She's upto 245,000km and the only trouble I've had is oil in the harness to the ECU, which in my case fried the ECU. I use Penrite Diesel HPR5 (5-40w), the whole car is filled with Penrite fluids.

@cewilson - thanks mate, already checked the radiator before we left =P. But I'll make sure I give the others a wash before I head out tonight.

Hi John,

I have to ask about the winch hawse at the top slot of the bar not the bottom, is there a reason for this? I would have thought it would put upward pressure on the winch.

If you revearse the winch so the cable comes off the top it runs just as nice but doesn't get as much mud, sand and grime in it. (well that's my theory anyway:))

Thanks Pete, Na all the steering gear on my car is the original stuff just repainted yellow to look a bit more snazzy;) I also did the trailing and radius arms as well as the brake shields which I think looks pretty good..

I've got quite a lot planed for it but a lack of funds at the moment is a problem:( I'm doing every thing mechanical first, I've done most of the the stuff that has needed to be done so am now doing the things that are not urgent but are better to be done before something blows up! Just general maintenance things really, I think the last owner was a bit frugal with that side of things:(

And after doing that I've got a whole heap of bar work that I want to make up for it so that will be fun, I am actually looking forward to doing it:)

No mate the Def with all the mud is my brothers rig, my Dad wouldn't dream of getting his one that dirty!! Don't blame him really, it takes a heck of a long time to wash properly!!!

Hi all,

I finally got a Defender, I bought it a couple of weeks ago but only got it home this morning. I only have one photo as yet (and its not very good), but I will take some more over the weekend.

The owner told me that it has a Landrover Diff lock that works when it is in low range, can enyone tell me if something like this exists. Not sure if the owner new much about landrovers as he also told me it has an Isuzu motor ( it has a 200td).

It is not without its problems as the gearbox sounds terminal an the clutch has some issues. But the best bit was the price , I picked it up for $1000. I couldn't get the money to him fast enough, after missing out on two other Landrovers because the owner changed there mind.

Anyway its Friday and it time for a beer or ten

The lack of an air inlet on the driver's side makes it most likely a 200Tdi (rather than 300). Re the diff lock he is probably referring to the centre diff common to all 90/110/130, which is lockable in high and low range. At $1000 you just got the bargain of the century, although it sounds like that gearbox needs some money spent on it.

There is no air inlet on the drivers side, but there are two on the passengers side( one on top of the guard and one the side ). The owner did say that the diff lock was in the rear axle. The rear axle does have different hubs on it . (see photo) And yes I do think ihave got abargin even if the gearbox does need a rebuild, I sill have a cheep Defender.

Its a 94 model and it has a 5 speed in it. I'm fairly sure it's not an Isuzu. (see photo)

Looking at the pics, the engine IS a 200Tdi.
It is probably complianced as a 94 model, but built in late 93.
The gearbox will be an LT77,if it is up for a complete rebuild, you might be better off getting a short bellhousing R380 which is a stronger box,and available from O/S for a lot less than it costs to get an LT77 rebuilt properly.

The rear hubs are aftermarket H/D items, but who knows what is fitted to the diff ?But there are no lockers that only work in low range.
If you have no air/vacuum lines going to the diff, then you can check for an auto locker by jacking the rear wheels off the ground, releasing the handbrake and turning the wheels by hand, make sure vehicle in is neutral. If opposite wheel turns in the opposite direction then you have a normal open diff centre.

as low ranger said.

200 tdi, your gearbox will be a LT77. not known to be the best of the bunch, these gear box's also came in discos of the same years, ( they also came with autos)

personalty i prefer the 200 to the 300, both are easy to get a bit more GO from.

the rear hubs used to look like the front ones, what you have there is just a bout on replacement for the black plastic bit, a bit of bling realty.

and by the looks of it you have gotten a real deal

Hi all,

Danny was picked up last Friday. WOW what a difference to my V8D2!! We took him for a drive on Sunday for a play at Burrinjack...highway noise is fine and just a pure joy to drive. The gearbox is super and handles the torque so much better than D2 - I was able to accelerate up each highway hill whereas the D2 lost a little speed. The D2 is a lounge chair in comparison! The only negative is the silly little fuel tank.

Recently crossed over from my discovery 3 to the defender 90 and I love my car.

So far I've kept it simple with light guards, side steps & interior mats. Transferred the tire pressure monitor across from the D3, and she has been running nice for the first 500kms.

Just thought I say hi, and am looking forward to the waves as I pot around Victoria!

If you buy one ,you will love it.:DYou only run it in the rear,as it would affect the steering if you fitted it to the front. It will definately increase the ability of your vehicle, and gives the best bang for your dollar.
No need to worry about switching on or off, just concentrate on driving.
The only downside I have seen is on slippery muddy side slopes, but not often come across any situation that I have wished I didn't have one.
I think you can buy them for around $800 from the U.S. Sold as No Spin lockers.Just make sure you specify that it is for a Salisbury.
Not just the locker at play in that video,it has taken a lot of time......and money for that matter,to get the old truck to where she is in that video, and a lot more since, has increased its ability even further

Hi Didge,
It does look a bit clean doesn't it. It does actaully get used for what it was designed for and does have the odd dirty weekend. I have been a 4x4 club member for 16 years now and my 4x4s have travelled a good bit of the country. Having said that, my fellow club members warn me if there is a mud hole coming up and generally rib me about getting the car dirty. I don't know why.:)

Gday 4 wheeler. Love the wheels, wondering what brand they are.

4wheeler
13th March 2012, 07:10 PM
Hi Rusnut,
They are Terrafirma 16 inch TF100 beadlock capable alloys. They can be purchased here on some of the sponsors sites or from overseas. In standard form they have no beadlock fitted. If the beadlock ring is purchased the tyre is fitted to the external face of the rim and locked on with the lock ring (not road legal). They are available in matt black, anthracite (gun metal grey like mine) or white. They weigh about 2kgs more than a Boost alloy rim. Check the Terrafirma 4x4 website for more details. Note that specifications are currently being updated as apparently I have been the only person in humanity to point out to the suppliers that information on the suppliers sites is wrong. Won't go into it further but ask suppliers to look at the specifications on the side of the box. That way you won't get any nasty surprises. Note that standard Boost alloy offset is +33. You following where I'm going with this?;)

Rusnut
13th March 2012, 07:17 PM
Thanks for that, bet you were peeved off when you dont get what you ask for, you would reckon they could get it right being in the business of selling wheels. They are nice though.

I second that!

When warranty’s run out you could look at taller (255/85/16) if you really want to, but there is no gain whatsoever (except higher fuel consumption!) in going wider than 265/75/16.

Remember that sand "footprint" only works front to back on lower pressures, but wider tyres just increases your drag without adding much if anything to the footprint.

You've lost me there... I would have thought that a wider tyre will give you more surface area than a narrower tyre, therefore less weight per unit of surface area, therefore more chance of riding over the sand instead of digging down...

Loubrey
15th March 2012, 03:02 PM
Not really the correct thread for it, but a quick answer...

The only 2 factors that increases footprint is "height" or rolling diameter and pressure. There is very little to be gained by going wider except additional drag to slow your momentum. Think about it - in sand you are constantle pushing a little "hill" of sand in front of the tyre. The wider your tyre the bigger the volume and weight of the sand hill your momentum's got to overcome. Wider is in fact considerably worse than "skinny" on all soft surfaces. Wide or "fat" tyres only has benefit on blacktop and for those who like the looks.

Have a read on the article attached for a detailed explanation of the height/pressure relationship.

About.com: http://www.4x4now.com/sfjun96.htm (http://4wheeldrive.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&sdn=4wheeldrive&cdn=autos&tm=42&gps=64_6_1366_673&f=00&tt=14&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.4x4now.com/sfjun96.htm)

This is why a vehicle with 315/70/15 tyres on has a far greater chance of getting stuck in sand than a 255/85/16 at the optimum tyre pressure.

We can start a new thread if there's different opinions on the matter

yeah, just kidding! I haven't met a defender owner yet who hasn't taken it into the bush. If you know of one, let me know I'll buy it. When I first got mine dirty, I was proud and kept it that way for a week, but then the novelty wore off. Nice looking rig though :)

yep, I've got a video somewhere on the laptop from a training guy at Stockton beach who says it's all in the pressure and the length of tread on the sand not the width and that people running 750R16's at the right pressure will do just as well as those with fat tyres. :)

Got my new roof rack fitted and stuck on a Mantec RAI, have not gone to much effort to make sure it is all watertight yet as I don't foresee too many water crossings in my Simpson trip later this yr, once the warranty has run out then I can get modify the air intake more.

Went to the 4wd & camping show at the weekend on the GC, if I had a million dollars came to mind.. I have a few things outstanding to do and loads of money not earned yet to spend, need to finish the bits I have been buying and not fitted, Decat pipe is in the shed waiting to have some wrap put on it and then the mission to fit it.

3rd row seats are coming out, and so is the second temporary, and so is the roof lining and all the trim, getting a few mm of Rhino lining over all metal in the back through to the bulk head might even strip out the boxes under the seats and do them if I feel energetic but the wiring scares me, once that is done then I will reassess the sound/heat proofing requirements before I put it all back together.

Tyres are looking to be the next urgent issues the last 10k has taken its toll on the tyres but can't complain, 88k so far on the GG's just need to get some black wheels, the Boosts are not doing it for me these days, and would be good to keep them in the shed with the GG's on them or what's left of them. Anyway.

Tidy setup there Pat! Snap on that Mantec "Plastic Jobbie" RAI.

I met a guy from Mantec at the Land Rover World Show a couple years ago (used to live in Worcestershire, so no name dropping!) who worked on the aerodinamics and intakes of that RAI and he claimed that the shape and angles of the intakes actually seperated dust and heavier particles (vortexes, spinning air, high pressure, low pressures and a load of techie talk) to allow for cleaner air reaching the filter.

Might have been complete bumpf, but constantly driving dirt roads in the Pilbara, I've never seen cleaner filters on any of my previous Defenders.

I reckon he is probably right, this is based on my complete lack of knowledge regarding the subject, but I think all those metal blades under the intake head are shaped the way they are for a reason, and the one at the top on the back looks perfect for ejecting unwanted particles :)

Making the intake watertight also makes it 'dust-tight'. You generally get cleaner air up at the top of the snorkel and as Loubrey has already pointed out the design of that thing helps to remove foreign particles in the air.

Air leaking in downstream of the head would not only limit the effect of it's intended design, but would also carry dust in with it which kind of defeats the point of having the thing in the first place.

Just something to think about before heading into the dusty ol' Simpson.

Either way you have a nice rig there and I don't think you'll have any difficulties crossing the Simpson in it.

I've wanted a Defender ever since I was about 10
Dad wanted one, but Mum couldn't drive manual - so we bought a disco instead. It was a new '94 V8 at first, then a new '97 tdi which was much nicer.

I bought my first Landy at the end of 2007, it was a 1970 2a 2.25L petrol ute ("Bruce") with both ute roof and full-length soft-top, which I then added to by buying a full hardtop roof. I still have Bruce, but he's just too exhausting to take on long drives (especially the overdrive whine!!!!!!!!!). My wife and I loved almost everything else about Bruce, so we started looking for a Defender.

On Monday night we travelled North with a mate to inspect a 1997 wagon..... a couple of hours later we were southbound with our new Defender!!!!!!! We're absolutely delighted with him, and are planning to fix up a few things pretty soon to keep us ahead of the maintenance game (timing belt is of unknown age so that'll be first in line, head gasket has a very small weep and we'll kill the rust in the bottom of the doors). We've decided to keep things simple and call him "Bruce", so now the 2a has become "Old Bruce".

Here's a photo from the service station on the way home with him :)

G'day all,

Well, like a few other Perth Land Rover owners, we also recently headed off down to the Albany Land Rover dealer to pick up our new 110. After doing all the paper work it was a quick get to know you and then we headed off back to Perth. All good on the way home except for some unknown reason blew the fuse for the instrument cluster. Swapped the radio fuse and continued on, stopping for coffee and fuses at Williams. That was on the 28th of April and since then there's been no other issues . It's great to drive :D has performed well in traffic and returned 25mpg to and from work.

Already fitted with ARB roo bar, 120 litre fuel tank, Hayman Reese towbar, front mudflaps and mats.

Hi

I bought my 130 in the UK during April last year, it has just been shipped back to the UK from Queensland (was 337 HQD). The main attraction was that it was already fitted with a compliance plate, which ment we could import it back to Austrailia on a tourist visa. From that point onwards what had been a dream started to become a reality.

Marion and I had aways said that as soon as the kids were old enough to look after themselves we would go travelling. So with kids aged 21 and 19, jobs we hated, it was time to start the planning!!

As bought the 130 has a steel frame welded to a steel trayback with a wood and plastic camper built onto the frame. We thought this would be fine for occasional/weekend use but didn't offer enough secure storage for a 12 month trip. We fitted an ex-utilities company Quadtech box instead and started kitting it out.

The photos show the vehicle before and after.

At the moment the 130 is on a container ship somewhere in the Indian Ocean, and due to arrive in Sydney at the end of the month. We arrive in Sydney on 27th May so we can sort out any problems with the importation. Once it is on the road we plan to head north for the dry season, but our plans are very vague and we will take advice from locals rather then visit the more obvious places.

All the best

Steve & Marion

Lot of math in converting km's to miles and liters into gallons...:D I spent 8 years in the UK and kept converting the trip computer's MPG readouts back to km/l and l/100km...

28mpg (UK gallons) = 10l/100km (close enough)

so divide 28/(mpg) then multiply by 10

so 25mpg = 11.2l/100

jakeslouw

1 UK gallon = 4.55L

1 mile = 1.6 km

28mpg = 9.85km/L give or take a couple of decimal points.

C H T
11th May 2012, 05:01 PM
FWIW

1. MPG = (Kms/lts)x2.82

2. Converting MPG to fuel required to cover distance in Kms: (Dist in Kms/MPG)x2.82 = Fuel Qty in litres

EG 1. 558.8kms 65.61lts = 558.8/65.6 = 8.52kms/lt x 2.82 = 24.3MPG

EG 2. Dist 1547kms 21.5MPG = 1547/21.5 = 71.95 X 2.82 = 202.9Lts of fuel required

Why are we still trying to work out fuel consumption in MPG? Australia has only been dealing with metric units for 42 years now.
It's pretty simple to work out your fuel consumption based on the amount of kilometers on your odometer against how many litres of fuel in your tank- it's not rocket surgery.
"did 575km and used 86.82 litres" - i reckon you used about 15.1L/100km - too easy!
We all know that 9L/100km is pretty reasonable fuel consumption for a diesel and that a petrol V8 will return about 15-17L/100km on the highway if it's running right, about time we moved on from the imperial measurements, don't you think?

The ARBs are awesome when they work. Just make sure you route the hoses so they don't rub. Any leak in the line and they don't work and that only happened once. They are awesome for tight, technical trails when you need the selectability. Mech locker in a short wheelbase truck would not be my choice.

I think for my next build I'm going to keep it simple, D110 with Tru Tracks front and back, no more rock crawling for me.

FYI the Ashcrofts are air lockers they use a static piston which is less prone to air leaks and engage the collar 6mm not the 2.5mm of the ARB so less likely to slip out.

And being Ashcroft they are made specifically for the landrovers and super tough.

They are also $700 each not whatever ARB charge now so are definitely worth considering.

Hi n-plus-one,

The Minister For Finance & Everything refuses to grant approval for the purchase of a winch and off-road bumper on the front, something about ruining the front lines of the Defender shape !! . . . still not happy mind you, and might just turn up home with one bolted on !

Had to get 'triangle' 'u-shape' inserts bolted/welded to the chassis mainframe, looks like the recovery points are bolted to the bumper but they are actually structurally secured to the chassis for use with my hand winch.

We shouldn't be getting ourselves into too much trouble, that will require a winch, at the moment as we have 2 kids under 14 months and its not fair on them going hardcore 4x4ing and having their heads flung about; so the front recovery points and hand winch will do for the time being.

They are COR4 Recovery Points, nice solid pieces of kit, but a bit ex-c getting them in from Italy. Also got a COR4 front Diff Guard for a bit of protection.

Thanks for your question,
Dave

Nice tyres Mike;)
I had to remove the lip on the flares to clear my tyres, and also had to flatten the original lip on the guards, and also a small amount of trimming.
I think I had to trim the front of the front flares as well.
I notice in one of the pics that the rear of your RHR flare doesn't look like it is mounted to the guard anymore:eek:

Thanks Wayne, glad i went with your recommendation on the Trepadors, as i said before i was going to go with Kumho KL71 but they just looked too fat in the 35" size. Then i was going to go the tall and skinny option with the Interco 35.5 x 10.5 size but they don't do a radial in that size any more unfortunately.

So far i'm impressed with how quiet they are on the road compared to the Nankang Mudstars that were on it and they are great in the wet. I haven't used them properly in anger off road yet but that will come soon.

That panel damage happened a couple weeks back before i fitted the new tyres, i came off second best with a sandstone wall and i would rather not talk about it at the moment :wasntme:

I'll get around to fixing it soon, i can do panel work but aluminium is pretty new to me, ill have to strip the paint back and anneal with a torch before i start bashing it back into shape, i've already pulled it back a fair bit with a slide-pull hammer. Gives it character right ;)

I have the Kumho on mine as well, can agree how quite they are on the road, mine are a bit smaller at 265x75x16.

The only time I hear them is in the rain, but I think it is the water hitting up under the guards.

Had mine a full pressure in black soil/mud the other day, went really well.

Great looking truck.

Hi All,

I just packed up the tools and washed the 90 after fitting a new ARB winch bar . No winch yet but its comming .Took me most of the day and a new drill bit but its level and the gaps are now equal. The bar came with a few dents already fitted if it was on any other vehicle I would take it back but its a bit hard to prove once you unwrap it . I panel beated it with a rubber hammer and touched up the scratch with some flat black. This is probaly why I got a $100 buck discount.I fitted the Front Runner safe under the console earlier in the week and the Wind cheater roof rack. The roof top tent (feather light) is ready to go on and the dual long range tanks are on their way.

I had a roof tent on my old SWB Nissan GQ, so expected the little Deefer to handle similarly with the weight up there. I am very, very surprised. Even swinging around my local, small diameter roundabout, it sits very flat and doesn't feel anywhere near as "rolly" as the GQ. I've only driven around the block a couple of times and to the local train station on the freeway a couple of times. Tomorrow I head 54km's away and will take a few minor roads, still sealed unfortunately, and see how it feels then. So far, I am happy with it. I guess the fuel economy might suffer, so lucky I'm fitting another 90 litres of fuel tank capacity!

Gary,

I do not condone loading the roof more than the 90kg odd that Land Rover recommends, but I've been in situations in the past where is was unavoidable.

80 liters of diesel fuel in 4 jerry cans, a rooftop tent, and a couple of 15kg Pelican cases had to be carried on the roof rack due to unavoidable circumstance.

Weaving around the insane number of potholes on a standard Central African road, there was hardly any noticeable roll of the 90. Certainly no more than normal.

They are very tough little wagons...

After playing around for most of the day my new roof top tent is fitted. Thanks John B for dropping by with some helpful advice on hinges and heights. The feather light needs to be packed up around 6mm if fitted to a windcheater roof rack this gives the hinges enough room to open correctly so there is no stress on the frame. I used some 50 x 6 mm hard rubber from Clark Robber to raise it just enough to clear the outer frame of the roof rack. Just waiting for the dual long range tanks to arrive and its almost finished. Will lash out on a shelf system and some LED driving lights next week.

Window tinters do not much like doing Deefers! The guy at the shop showed me some of the posts on the tinter's forum. One tinting shop asked if anyone had any tips or traps for doing Deefers. Replies were like "start running now!":D. Many shops won't do the curved roof windows or will charge quite a bit extra to include those. I had removed the rear seats in mine and I think they were happy for that:angel:.

Just went across the Simpson with 140 kg on top... Roof rack, tent, sand anchor, sand tracks and 2nd spare. No issues. The 90 weighed 2600 kg of the allowed 2750 kg. Two extra tanks, wich, a-frame protector, fridge, water, 2nd battery and a heavy driver all add up :-)

I joined in March this year and after browsing the site and my first post was: Help, wife wants a patrol! (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/146135-help-wife-wants-patrol-i-am-heart-struck-defender.html)

As I am still here I won the battle on the proviso that she chose the colour. Anyway our defender has arrived and is 'almost' ready for delivery (See here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/161955-new-car-accessories-not-up-scratch-what-do.html)). Being an impatient bugger I couldn't wait to get some photos to share so here is the Defender that could have been a Patrol:eek:

Hi Glenn,

Love the trim on the steering wheel & seats... might have to get me some of that :)
Love the colour too... Pity about having to choose one colour per vehicle - it would be much better to be able to choose a color each time you get in. Firenze Red would get plenty of use!

Enjoy the Jate rings!

Adding my 1985 110 dual cab tray back Land Rover to the list. This truck was a personal import from overseas and was originally left hand drive. At some point it had a full off body rebuild and now has

# - Fully gal chassis.

# - Dual batteries

# - Runs dual fuel ( LPG and petrol ) and sports a worked 4.4 P76 V8 Add an Edelbrock manifold, counter balanced crack shaft, forged pistons etc.

Many more mods and improvements to come ... :)

Best, Simon

Hey Simon, where did you get your front bar? I love it. Where could I buy one? Cheers.

Definately not. I bought it as an old county earlier this year in Cairns. We then went about unbolting the roof, cutting the doors and making up the roll cage, along with painting on the stripes of course! The cage I think is a work of art. Unlike the army bars, this one goes straight through the floor and welded to the chassis. Currently it is getting raised springs and shocks put in, along with some mud tyres for the upcoming wet. Oh, and trying to sort out my starter motor problems!

It definately hasn't been to Perth (as a zebra anyway). Hopefully the perth one puts up a photo though, as I would love to see it.

Looks like the Nara Bronze is getting to be less and less 'limited'.. when I bought mine I was told that only 20 of the 110's and 40 of the 90's where being bought into Australia.. but yours looks like it's from the second shipment.. with another shipment arriving early next year too..

Still it's a great colour and looks good.. (if you don't mind buffing out pinstriping every time you take it anywhere near a tree and a lot of difficulty getting accessories for it lol).. But I love mine.. and hope that you'll love yours just as much.. :)

Yep that was me! I noticed a couple Disco's out and about but because it was the first real test drive I was intensely focused on correcting the wandering steering, listening out for 'weird noises' (lots of those) and also keeping an eye on the vital statistics (EGT, temp, boost etc).

I did catch a land rover wave from a white defender yesterday when doing a short tune up run.. that made my day!

Satin Black Zu Rims. The only things I didn't like about my wheels are the chrome wheel nuts and the white sidewall text on show. All blacked out would have been better.. but not too bothered any more.

If you have standard land rover steels on then prepare yourself for a transformation! Post a before and after pic.

Here's a pic of mine before the Zu's (Italy 2009):

Thanks for the response. I have been following your 90 on the threads with interest. Especially aware about accessories being difficult! I know Barbagello sold two Nara Bronze 110's including mine, and I have seen 3 for sale by Southern land Rover (also in Perth). As far as I know, the UK did not get the Station Wagon version this time, only the Utilities.

I took "James" along some sand tracks yesterday up to Guilderton Lighthouse for sunset. Pics attached to show off the Nara Bronze.
