    'Fred' has a sunburnt nose

'Fred' has a sunburnt nose so I had a bit of a fiddle with some various means of removing the now cloudy clear coat from the paint on 'Fred's' bonnet.

I am using 400 grit paper, water and some elbow grease and taking the layers down until the undercoat just starts to appear.

Before I go any further, is there any paint stripper about that will remove the clear coat, but leave the base coat alone?

    Cranked+braced trailing arms

Made myself some cranked+braced trailing arms for the disco today.

Had some spare trailing arms floating around in the shed so I bent them 100mm away from where they meet the chassis so they clear the outrigger on the correct angle so they leave the chassis horizontal and meet the diff in the correct location while sitting on level ground(I don't own a pipe bender but the press did a pretty good job). I then made a stencil for the 5mm plate bracing 250mm long. cut, welded, painted. pretty happy with them.

revision 2 will be sleeved and braced the whole way but these will do for now .

Fitted a new coolant hose to the 300Tdi - you know the one with four hose openings to mount. A top hose had rubbed on a pulley. Horrible thing to get off once its been on there a while. Someone had fitted the clamp for the bottom one so the screw end was jammed up against the bottom of the fan shroud, making it impossible to get a screwdriver onto it. Much grunting and a little rude language was heard, I'm told.
We ended up having to cut the bottom one to get the old one off. Then the new one went on pretty quickly. Topped her up with water as no coolant available and drove back to Brissie with the temperature gauge sitting right where it should. Checked and the coolant hadn't dropped at all, so its all good. Now off tomorrow to get some coolant concentrate to add to the water to stop rust.
Next job will be a full oils change and new filters, but that will have to wait until after the next payday.

Yuck! I tried some automotive paint stripper, now I have to rub all 'Fred's' bonnet down to the undercoat, as the stripper made a real slimy mess of things, I spent 3 hours straight rubbing back today, until my arm started to complain and I had only done about an eight of the bonnets area.

Stop press ! I am going to start a 'Fred' thread.

    Milestone reached today.

I actually managed to spend 30 minutes on the D3 today (and spent 2 hours lying down afterwards ), replaced some interior lights with LED bulbs, a broken grab handle with a new one, the side indicators with clear ones and measured the cables for the rear camera before I ran out of strength.

    Woohoo!

Drove home from Sydney (thank goodness, I hate that place) after a Landy courier run, a Landy meeting, and a meeting with my lady
Casually cruising past all the servos on the way home, pleased in the knowledge that running on empty will still get me a good 120kms +.
Turned up "Riders on the Storm" and cruised on into the night.

Finally got the ****s with the stupid fake wood trim and have started stripping it out.
Rubber dash mat has gone in, wood surround on the AC controls is off, half the top strip is off too.
Also swapped to a different UHF antenna which seems to have solved my short range comms issues due to dodgy install on the first antenna (not happy Jan) and pulled out the old one.
Just need some more time and the inside of my beloved Phantom will no longer look as cheesy as an 80s porn soundtrack.
