How's Kaz Jase? Been a it quiet here of late. Hi ho hi ho. :(
Well we had an appointment at the specialist this week on Tuesday because that's when Karen had it written in her diary BUT no it was on Monday . We couldn't remember what time so we rang when they told us it was the day before & they had 2 cancelations & 2 no shows BUT no they couldn't ring us.. Anyway we wherent happy with him as he seemed more just about getting paid. So we made an appointment at my doctors as the last blood test we asked them to send to our doctors as well. So Karen went today to see him , He said her kidney has gone down some not completely though. But Karen stoped taking the pregnazone (steroids) she was on BUT he said NO DONT JUST stop them so he gave her some scripts for it only in 10mls though has to take 2 a day for a week then can go down to 1. Karen said to him I hate these things they make me awake all night & im so tired all the time & we think they contributed to the accident. He said to her YEAH WE BETTER GET YOU OFF THEM BEFORE YOU TURN INTO A SHORT LITTLE FATTY MUMA WITH A MOON FACE. Yes that's what he said .. He is a great doctor just out there swears like you've never heard anyone before ..He said stay on them for a month & we will get another blood test & see how things are going. He said he will look after it so we don't have to go back to the money guy oh I mean specialist..
Karen got him to look at her leg as she still has lots of bruising & a large lump on it just below the knee. He said caise she gave it a good whack its a large blood clot & will take quiet awhile to go down ..
Karen has lost 2 jobs since she has been off they went with contract cleaners. But Karen is still going to be off for at least 2 more weeks..
Had to take out 3 loans to pay the bills. on our centerlink payments so with the repayments to those & with Karen not working its very tight around here & Karen stresses about it to much..
I was realy looking forward to going to Samurai beach fishing overnight . But I cant believe you now have to camp in one spot & you must have & use a chemical toilet.
But anyway we mite go away next week through the week so its not crowded.Dont know where yet could go to Barrenton tops maybe or maybe the beach . Will just wait & see.. We just need a break away. We brought a pop up toilet tent already..We have seen those chemical toilets on ebay for only around $49 so mite get one .Went to the camping shop to look at them awhile ago & couldn't believe how much they wanted for them from $100 the other wherent even that dear with postage..
I have been out so many times in the past few weeks running Karen around I have even been out on my own a couple of times :o .Karen only started driving on Tuesday on her own , she went to Kotara shopping but got tired , she rang me to let me know how she was cause I was worried of her being on her own she said im fine just tired so ill be home soon..But other then that all good..

Hi Jason,
I want to use a P38 Steering Box on my conversion, this will go on the outside of the chassis rails and will enable me to use the defender radiator / intercooler side by side as fitted in a defender :)
I've been told that if I use the bottom steering section from the range rover it will mate up to the defender top section  and is quite an easy conversion.
Doesn't seem to be much info on the web though.
Bit of info here with pics :) What do you think ??

That first link looks good. The only reason I went with the Toyota box was price. Yeah the steering shaft should line up & fit straight onto a defender steering column, easy to make & weld those brackets to hold the box & you don't need to mod the front Xmember like I did. If I was to do it again I'd do it the same way as long as I could get the parts cheap enough plus you won't have to X-ray anything as it should be pretty much a bolt on except the brackets welded for the box. The steering shaft will be collapsible being modern usually. Just means it's 2 piece slides inside one so much easier. Yeah I'd go for that. The only concern I can see is the pitman arm. Arm at the bottom of the box , being straight you will just have to make sure when the balljoint is on that it doesn't hit the bottom of the chassis but you can either tilt the box or notch the chassis. Yeah that be easier & quicker conversion to do. & the drag link will need to be shortened to suit the series track. To easy if you have all the parts I'd say a weekend in the shed would get it done. Yes I quiet like that setup.
The second link I have most of everything on that site printed out.

Just thought I better let everyone know where still here & alive. Karens liver is still playing up just not as bad. She is still banged up from the accident & these tablets she has to take are really taking there toll on her. She has driven a couple of times on her own now & seems ok about it. I am still here wasting oxygen , sic of a lot of things & just finding getting outa bed each day hard. I have been drinking quiet heavy of late only had one yesdy & none today which is ok cause I started to want to drink from when I got up so ally's good there. We are waiting for a removal mob to come & pickup the Subaru , was hoping to get here today but hopefully tomorrow they give us $100 for it. But I keeping the battery out of it as it's only a month old. Ah well that's were we are at.

Ok another update . Karen is now down to 1 5m pregnazone a day now finishes around Thursday.. Down fall to these drugs is bad the side effects are terrible & Karen had most of them , BUT now that she is getting off them its worse Had to get her to the doctors on Saturday as Friday night she was in extreme pain in the guts cold sweats ended up having to strip naked & lay on the bathroom floor to cool down & its been like this every night since BUT today she started to get them during the day just after lunch..The doctor said yes its all from the pregnazone & coming off them.
When the specialist put Karen on them he never said anything about then except just take them we are very ****ed off with the specialist , Karen was hoping to get back to work this week but not now .. The doctor told us to take 1 pannadole every 4 hours , Which wont be doing Karens liver any favours.. So once she gets this all out of her system we will vertualy be back to square one with the liver & kidneys. Her liver has gone down a little but now with stoping these tablets its just going to go back to what it was & pannadole wont help at all other then it makes the pain a little easier for Karen but not that much.. Ahwell we will just start all over again I guess..
I have been working on the camper the last 2 days . I have taken the camper off & removed everything camper off it so its just a trailer . Will get it registered soon & we can use it plus if we ever get to go away we can throw everything in that instead of loading the car up. Plus can take the pig & other stuff then..Trailer is all painted inside now & has brandnew lights on it just need to take it for a blue slip since its been unregistered for a bit to long.. other then that not much to report from here..
Hope everyone is well ..
I mite sell the camper top not sure seen one on ebay secondhand missing some stuff & only sold for $325 , ours is complete & has the base ..Dunno yet , its just sitting on the back of Harry for now..

He tried to intimidate our kids by swerving for them if they where walking in that's street & other kids & adults . I swerved for him in the green one its just he was sitting on the front steps so drove on footpath :D. He is a bad bastard.Halfway up there from our old place one of the guys from the tattoo shop lives there, nice bloke & he looks after that end of the street & the dickhead when hes home anyway..

Well had Karen back to the doctors today , Gees its amazing what a phone call from the doctors to the specialist can do.. Had to get over to the specialists straight away.. The pains Karen has been having are only slightly from the decrease of dosage of tablets , Seems these tablets CAUSE peptic olsors Yeah I know that's not how ya spell it.. So that's whats been causing the pain mostly.. Had to go have a blood test straight away after there & we go back next Tuesday at 4.30. He has put Karen back up on the pregnazone to 15ms for now & she got a script for some more tablets to counteract the olsors. She defiantly has an auto immune condition & he will bring her off the pregnazone very SLOWLY & will look at some other long term medication for the auto immune ..So its going to be a long haul off these tablets & quiet some time before she can go back to work if she has any left by the time she can..
OH & to make our ****ed up ****y life even more worse remember back in September Karen got hit in the Subaru ? Well we got told by NRMA that the matter was closed as there was to many indiferances in the 2 stories .. Well we gets a phone call this afternoon about it again.. See the other party had comprehensive we only have 3rd party. Well we know they got a new bulbar out of it so they would of paid there excess BUT the new bulbar would of cost a lot more then that..So NRMA rang us & are now telling us we will get a bill for another excess of $650.. I recon NRMA have thought crap we paid for new bulbar worth more then the other parties excess so why not **** us up even more & say we now need to pay an excess that way they get close to there money back.. Our opinion only but really don't need this ****ing **** now . Had to pay for specialist today on our bad pay week so groceries where cut to a quarter of what we usualy get. We are fine we still have food just..
We both agree when we moved into this house our life turned to **** bigtime & has just kept going down hill ever since & fast.I will be putting the camper back on the trailer & putting rego on it & selling it along with the disco together. We will buy a cheap ass small run around for now & try get us out of the never ending sinking hole..
But Karen hasn't had any pains today as yet so hopping she wont get them now ..
Yep life is so worth living .

Still the same unfortunately she still get really bad extreme pain in guts , when she gets them she gets really hot has had to strip off & lay on the bathroom tiles to cool down they still last for hours. But the last 2 days they have started early so Karen was over them by about 1 this morning so she got some sleep. Me too cause I sit up with her till she's able to go to bed. Today they started about 3 this afternoon so hopefully they will they will be over early to so we can get some sleep.
We got the fine yesterday for the accident. $405. Have 21 days to pay ,but we will ring & pay it off weekly comes straight out of our pension.
Karen has been on those other tablets to counteract the steroids for a few days now but they don't seem to do a great deal.
Other then that we all good just need some really decant sleep. Fred is working all next week on the overnight shift so I think I'll take her as she has never done anything like this before , should be interesting.
We also go back to the specialist on Tuesday afternoon at 4 or 4.30.

So...............I'm waiting for an update on the rest of the day!!!!:)
Well yesterday was the first day Karen stayed awake all day. Today had a small snooze. Pains came again last night & was again after midnight when we went to bed. She says she is going back to work tomorrow cause we're broke. Yes we are but the bills are paid & there's food on the table. I don't want her to go back to work yet I'd rather her be 100% before. But what am I going to do. Sometimes it's just best to let her do what she wants. We have desided we are going to sell the disco & camper together. Also the hiking gear the new swag & the new fishing gear. Harry is also being sold as an unfinished project along with a lot of my tools. I will be keeping my big toolbox but that's about it. It's time to cut our loses. I can't get anything don't to Harry with no garage. We had a look around here at houses to rent & the next cheapest is $380 pw which is an extra $60 a week from this place in rent but we also pay water usage every week to cover that so the $380 is way way to much for us. Where just going to go back to a small normal car cheaper to run & insure. Cheaper maintenance as well. We have both had enough of getting nowhere & with the accident it's going to take us a year or more to recover. Plus we have Karens health & specialist bills now & that's more important to me. So we will be with Jim soon & landrover less.

Fred would be working when only the drive through is operating wouldn't she???? so she wouldn't be exposed to dropkicks. The only thing she has to be wary of is when she is knocking off and going out to her car, have her car keys ready in her hand and look around ( always be aware of her surroundings) and get in the car as quickly as possible and lock the doors.
Night shift is a bumma, did permanent nightshift for 6 years when I was truck driving back in the late 1970's. Always tired. Money was good though, amongst the best paying jobs I ever had, but in the end I got sick of it.
I tend to agree about females working late at night, but I guess I'm old fashion. I think females are more of a target for unwanted attention from morons. We have female bus drivers who do the night shift, but another way of looking at it is, equal pay for equal work.
Say hello to Karen, tell her to look after herself.

Ok so we went to the specialist appointment at 4.30 where I was soon told to wait in the car. Ok so Karens liver numbers are good now from the blood test on Friday. He can't understand why Karen is in so much pain of a night. So another blood test tomorrow which she is ****ed at since she has had so many in the last few months. This one is to check her pancreace enzymes & for cancer. With the tablets Karen still has to take the pregnazone (steroids) at the 15 ml so 3 tablets a day. & the nexim tablets she has been taking to counteract the steroids is a strongest dose tablet of 40mls now she has to take 2 a day one in the mornings & one in the night. Karen has to ring the specialist on Monday morning & speak to him to let him know if there is any change in the pains. He is going to keep her on these steroids till they can get the pain sorted & settled. Then he will very slowly reduce them till she is off them & once off them he will look at some long term replacements for them.

Received some bad news last night. Our daughter Kim who lives in Bundaberg was attacked and badly mauled by a dog.She works as a home care nurse and doing her rounds when she called into a regular client. The dog is normally locked away but when Kim knocked on the door the dog came around and attacked her. The dog is a Bull Mastiff.
She received a badly mauled ankle with three bones broken and some bones sticking through the skin. She underwent surgery at Bundaberg hospital last night and the Doctors reckon she is very lucky she did not lose her foot. They had to put three pins and a plate in.
I will be flying up to see her in the next couple of days, so may be off line for a while. Probably fly out over the weekend or on Monday.

Get this........the woman who owns the dog blamed Kim for not ringing first. I spoke to Kim this morning and she said the women is not her regular client and there was a warning on her job sheet but she didn't see it. When she did eventually look at it the warning it did not say the dog was vicious, only that there was a dog on the premises. With her own clients she knows of these warnings and they are usually for little yappy dogs that get locked in a room when she arrives. When she arrived at these premises, the whole house was open and the dog came charging out the door and bailed her up. Must have been terrifying for her.
The dogs owner said they kept this dog for protection.

Sorry Jim that's ****ing bull****. The dog should be put down no one needs a dog for protection unless your a drug dealer & ya deserve what ever happens to you. We have a vicious bread of dog & the day we got her we let all the kids in the street into the yard to play with her for that reason. If my dog ever bit anyone at all no matter how bad or even a nip she would be put down in a heart beat. She is a very friendly dog now cause we let everyone play with her. She does bark at people of a night but during the day anyone can walk in she won't hurt them. Probably knock them over with excitement then lick them to death. & if you need protection get an alarm or do as I do & have a couple of bars around the house for intruders.

Being trying for updates this morning but could not get through.
G'day Ausfree,
It is a shame to hear about your daughter and I hope she has a full and speedy recovery. It is sad when something like this happens and even worse when someone is providing care for the community.
How long are you staying in Bundaberg?
If you want to take a break there are a couple of fellow AULRO members here in Bundaberg.
Kind Regards

Hello Everyone,
I am starting to become very cautious about best wishes that things will improve for people.
I sent my regards of things improving for Karen and Jason and then things turned out worse for them both.
I finished reading a book by Richard Paul Evans - no relation as far as I am aware. The book is called The Walk. There are a lot of little maxims written on the left hand pages that mark the start of a new chapter. Yes and a lot of them I could relate to.
One thing I read was on page 98 Don't deceive yourself things can always get worse. I hope that people can avert this from happening.
It always makes me wonder when decent people who do their best towards other people seem to attract more than their fair share of misfortune.
So I hope that every one has reached the bottom of their descent and are finding themselves climbing back upwards and that the trend continues for them.
Here is a song from the American Civil War Hard times come again no more The song was written by an American Composer Stephen Foster over 150 years ago... it still applies today.

There is an Emmylou Harris version of the song too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09KCf_-wby4
For a male take of the song there is Johnny Cash - sung late in his life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8T9IvgAOI
I just found my lost favourite version of the song by Mavis Staples https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTmDt4j0F6g - it has got real soul + what sounds like a resonator guitar too.
Kind Regards

an things are backwards for us. Karen went back to work this week I wanted her to wait a week longer or more. She did a 4 hour job on Monday. A 2 hour job on Wednesday & a 3 hour job today. She is now siting on the lounge doubled over in pain. I said to her you should of waited. She said NO I SHOULDNT have. So I can see her needing more time off because she won't wait or go slower.
I haven't had the best of weeks. Depression hit again on Tuesday & was bad yesterday still fighting out of a dark hole now. I hate sitting around not doing any work to the cars specialy Harry. Or any project I build as we look at it as money in the bank when I finish we sell start again. But I have gone so backwards in that department since being here in this house.
Just had enough & sick of a lot of life at the moment.

Turned up at the airport to fly to Brisbane today and guess what, due to "technical problems" the flight was cancelled. Next flight out was at 6pm tonight.:o WHAT A PAIN!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Now back at home, (I'm not waiting around for over 6 hours) will fly out tomorrow (hopefully) but my son-in-law cannot pick me up so will have to fly from Brisbane to Bundaberg.
I have always used the Virgin flights rather than the other mob because they are normally so reliable, this is a first for me. I have heard of delays and maybe cancellations in bad weather but not like this. Looking at the bright side I would rather fly late in a plane that is safe to fly in.:)
The downside is this has now cost an extra $400.:D I can't believe it so expensive to fly Brisbane to Bundaberg.:o Looked at hiring a car and driving, they wanted $522 for a small sedan for a 24 hour hire. I didn't want to buy the bloody car, I just wanted to hire it for the day. If had hired it and returned it to Brisbane airport it would have cost $72 for the day.

Kim was knocked out for this, but they didn't put the pins in as they need to monitor the wound for while in case of infection. I will fly up on Monday to Brissy airport. Jay, my son-in-law will pick me up.

Hello, we are a poet are we Ian.:D Looking forward to catching up with you again. Daughter is coming along in her wheel chair to farewell me at Bundy airport. She has been given 15 weeks off work to recover and by the look of the wound, she will need it.The good news is, as the torn flap of skin has not died but looks quite healthy, she will not need a skin graft (phew, I can tell you from personal experience, skin grafts are VERY painful) and also she will not need pins in her ankle. It's a nice car, four years old and goes like a new one. The previous owner certainly looked after it. The previous owner has bought a new Dodge Nitro, same colour and he waves to my SIL when they pass on the road.:)
Well, that's it. Not very nice being chomped on by a mongrel, out of control dog. We have dog's (always have) but people who keep dog's like this should be banned from keeping them. The daughter has re-identified the dog as a Pit Bull cross breed. I can understand her mis-identifying the dog as a Bull Mastiff, but when a mongrel dog wants to turn your ankle into lunch, I think that would be the last thing on your mind.
It must have been a terrifying experience for her, and I am so angry, this took place.
She gets a full cast on next Wednesday (if there are no problems) which she will have to wear for 8 weeks, followed by a special "boot" that she will have to wear for a period of time. She will be off work for 15 weeks.
On the way back to Newcastle I had to change planes at Brisbane airport and V8Ian and JerryD met me there for a quick coffee.

Thanks for that Ian, you had better be careful, I JUST might keep you to that promise.:D
Well, as promised, I am now posting photo's of my trip to Bundaberg.:)
First photo is my daughter with her leg all wrapped up.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/1005.jpg (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/Ausfree/media/DSC_0480_zps3a27978e.jpg.html)
On Wedenesday we took her to Bundaberg hospital to have her wound checked and this is the wound on the outside of her left leg. She said after the dog bit her you could see her tendons and leg bone.:(
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/1006.jpg (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/Ausfree/media/DogBite25thMarch2014137_zps7d13944e.jpg.html)
The operation took two hours and my daughter said the surgeon did a great job. This is her leg from the other side, the swelling on her ankle is caused by a fractured bone.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/1007.jpg (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/Ausfree/media/DogBite25thMarch2014138_zpsc07d5cc1.jpg.html)
While in Bundaberg I caught up with POP058 and Lionelgee. POP058 brought along the "Green Machine" that he bought from Banjo.:) That is POP058 (Paul) on the left and Lionelgee (Lionel).

This is the only modification Paul has made to the vehicle. You might be interested in this Jason.:)

This is my SIL's Dodge Nitro, he is busily trying to load my daughter into the vehicle for the trip to Bundy Hospital.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/1011.jpg (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/Ausfree/media/DSC_0495_zps9a9d1d20.jpg.html)
On the way back to Newcastle I had to change planes at Brisbane airport and V8Ian and JerryD met me there for a quick coffee.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/12/523.jpg (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/Ausfree/media/DSC_0510_zps4485ccde.jpg.html)

Hello Ausfree Beards in Queensland - you must be aware of the evaporative cooling technique similar to the old canvas water bags and the old meat safe? The same rules apply to beards!
They are also handy for sieving the mosquitoes out of water and for catching those errant crumbs while eating.

Hello All,
I suppose this thread started by Banjo is somehow fitting to post this.
Back in 2011 I was recommended to be part of a national research project that was designed to interview the same group of people experiencing housing difficulties and challenges every six months - originally over a two year period. There were over 30 sites through Australia where these interviews were to take place. The research went that well that it was extended so the same groups of people were actually interviewed 6 times, over a three year period. This was the first time anywhere in the world where the target people had been interviewed more than once.
Anyway, the last round of interviews has finished for me because I interviewed the last person on my list this afternoon. Every six months I have been able to work on a project and each time I had hoped to be employed in a full time permanent role and not be involved in the next round of interviews. So since September 2011 I have had two periods of casual employment each year.
I feel a bit like the Bridge Builder Lemming in the old game from the early to mid 1980s. This lemming had a backpack full of planks or stones and once clicked on they would stop walking and commence building a bridge. If the bridge builder lemming ran out of planks they would raise their arms up in the air, shrug and then merrily walk off the end of their bridge and step forth into the void.
My step off into the unemployment void might not be so dramatic. I had one of my referees let me know that the chair of an interview panel for a job I applied for had contacted them for a referee report on Wednesday. :) Hopefully someone will click on me and I will turn into Parachute Lemming.
There have even been a couple of jobs that have come up locally in the past couple of days that I have applied for.
I have about two hours of paper work to do with the research job and then an era will come to an end. Officially I and the other 30 or so interviewer are employed until the 11th of May. I will have two hours of paperwork and packing stuff up then..
Hopefully, as they say ... "as one door closes...."
Well that is it for me for this message. Have a good weekend everyone!
The funny thing is that with the contracts every six months and other contract work I have bought a Series 3 Land Rover each time - history will repeat itself this contract
Shhh the last bit of this message is a secret.:wasntme:
Kind Regards

My plan is to combine all the Series 3 Land Rovers I have bought that have been in various states of disrepair, engines & gearboxes plus or minus; into one restored civilian type, and one restored Military FFR or GS.
I have a cunning plan - I will have this Johnny Cash song on an MP3 player when I go into fill out the motor registry forms and they ask me what year of manufacture each vehicle is....

Just for something to do, Mrs Aus and I went for a drive up the new Hunter Expressway to Singleton.:D What a great road, we arrived at Singleton in just over half an hour, not much longer than a trip to Newcastle.:o
We had a pub dinner at the Percy Hotel, had a look at a place that was selling old bric-a-brac and I bought two old books on steam trains.
When you realise it used to take over an hour to drive to Singleton through Maitland , Greta, Lochinvar and Branxton, it certainly is an improvement. Will have to re-visit the Infantry Museum at Singleton in the near future.:D

G'day Jason,
It is a real bugger about the black dog jumping you and with Karen getting tired again.
Sometimes it is best to set very small goals in the day even if it is step 0.5 of a 20 step process. Try and do too much in the down days and things either do not get achieved; or get done incorrectly. The result of which is that one dumps more poo on oneself. Or instead of doing something practical and hands-on you could have a day mapping out a strategy - sort of measure twice and cut once.
I have been trying to get back into the study and writing saddle after taking a break for a couple of weeks. It has taken me nearly a week to get back into the swing of things again. I actually did a decent day of work today. Oh yes I did have to take things easy on myself with how much progress or lack thereof I had made in each of the previous days.
Or maybe it was just the motivation of having a supervisory visit with my Principal Supervisor on Thursday that has geed me up :p I swear the Professor must be the incarnation of an Inquisitor from a dark period of Spanish history.
Treasure the good days and set reasonably small goals for the not so good days so when you are about to go to sleep you can reflect on achieving something from the day.
Kind Regards
Lionel

Hey guys, anybody here know anything about Kayaking????:)
I have been toying with the idea of doing some exercising. Not into the gym scene. Push bike riding does appeal, I did a lot of it when I was a teenager but there are too many morons driving cars nowadays, so I rule that out as too dangerous.
When I was a teenager I owned a canoe and my younger brother and myself spent many a day paddling around Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens.:)
I walk a lot, every day I walk too and from work and I am reasonably fit for my age.
A kayak appeals because I can exercise, not worry about being run over by a drunk moron and also take my camera with me to take interesting photo's, as I am also interested in photography. Mrs Aus is interested in a kayak also.:)
Any body had any kayak or canoe experience??? If so what recommendations for a kayak to be used in still waters, such as a lake. I would also prefer a "sit-in" type rather than a "sit-on" type but am open to suggestions.:D

we have basic kayaks and have done a bit of river kayaking both for fun and fishing.
I also thought a kayak you sit on and a canoe you sit in.
Not really sure what to recommend though.
what was your budget?
is it purely for exercise?
how would you transport it/them?

They advertise both sit on and sit in Kayaks. With the sit ons being generally cheaper.Budget only small, as I am still working usually 6 days a week, so I have limited time, so I would probably look at second hand first and see if I like it.:)
They say the sit in is generally more stable as the centre of weight is lower.:D I would also have to purchase roof racks for the car (or use my trailor) and also buy a flotation vest for safety.:D The lake is only 10 minutes from here, so travelling is not a major problem.

G'day All,
To carry on the health theme that seems to keep cropping up on Banjo's excellent thread I have a contribution to make. I had a bit of a delemma as to whether to post here or hijack the General Forum thread about "Blind Pets".
I originally had to leave my trade in Horticulture because my eyes stuffed up and I had to wear gas permeable rigid contact lenses because I became legally blind. I cannot focus properly. The drawback is with gas rigid contact lenses is that they do not go together with dust and dirt found within the horticulture industry - so it was goodbye trade and hello retraining. The bit of dust or grit gets trapped between the cornea and the surface of the contact lens and the edges of the grit cut the cornea - this cut then scars.
Lately I have been having eye trouble I thought was either infections or an allergy. The eye ointment and drops I was prescribed from the GP did Jack.
After a month wait I got into the local eye specialist - ophthalmologist. I was told that I do not have an eye infection in both eyes.
Instead my eyes have changed shape and the gas permeable rigid contact lenses have actually worn part of my left and right cornea away and my eyes have become inflamed.
So I have to remove my contact lenses and treat my eyes with some heavy duty drops until I go back to my next appointment in 3 weeks time. Anyway I will need a new set of rather expensive contact lenses. This means at least 4 trips to Brisbane - Trip One: get measured and fitted with new lenses. Trip Two, travel back to Brisbane to try on the new lenses. Trip Three:come back one week later to make sure the lenses and they eyes are compatible, Trip Four: come to Brisbane back one month later to see that the eyes and the contact lenses are still friends with each other. Oh and the contact lens fitter who is the best in Australia has a big backlog of clients and a long waiting list. I suppose it comes from being the best contact lens fitter in Australia. The new lenses are a different design from my existing lenses - bigger and supposedly I will not have all the issues with dust and dirt.
In case your wondering why I just don't wear glasses? It is because my eyes have deteriorated beyond the mechanical ability for glass lenses to be ground. My wearing contact lenses is not caused by vanity. It is the only option I have to see and live a relatively normal life.
So as from tonight I will be without contact lenses and legally blind until further notice. Since being diagnosed in 1999 I have daily thanked the technology that has allowed me to be able to slip a couple of pieces of plastic on to my eyes and be able to work, drive and go for a walk without falling down holes that I cannot see. I have been very lucky that I could wear these gas permeable contact lenses.
However, since I cannot wear my current little bits of plastic it means any posts I do from this point on will be a one-eyed nose to the screen finger taps on the keyboard as I touch type.
Here is what my and other people with the same eye condition see their point of view from the image is sourced from Wikipedia
The perspective is based off a 1912 painting by Marcel Duchamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that is called "Nude Descending Staircase....
Accessed 19th April 2014 from ...Fileuchamp - Nude Descending a Staircase.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Duchamp_-_Nude_Descending_a_Staircase.jpg)
Well that is it for me I suppose.
Kind Regards
Lionel

Thanks Jim,
At least it means that I can only write short messages on AULRO for a while. This will be appreciated by some readers no doubt as I tend to write a bit.
The scary thing is being a passenger in the front seat of a car and having more than six cars side-by side coming at you on a single lane road. Okay there is actually only one car coming towards me. Well I suppose it is not as scary if I was driving at the time.
I will be riding shot gun for a while!
It does have its interesting points - I can play which of a person's six or seven heads I should be talking to!
I just have to be careful cutting up food for dinner, like onions and doing a count of my fingers before eating each meal - I am the chef of the family.
Kind Regards
Lionel

Well, we went to Morpeth today and visited the art gallery. Nice paintings there mainly of WW1 lighthorse. Prices ranged for an original painting from a bargain basement $3950 for a relatively small one up to $19,700 for a very large painting.:o Didn't bother ordering any, copies were a bit cheaper but still waayy out my league.:)
We had a good look around, there were plenty of people there, you could buy a coaster for $5 or a coffee mug for $15. A biro pen made from a .308 bullet cost $40 in a case or $35 without a case. Didn't bother.:) Enjoyed the window shopping though.:D

Any body had any kayak or canoe experience??? If so what recommendations for a kayak to be used in still waters, such as a lake. I would also prefer a "sit-in" type rather than a "sit-on" type but am open to suggestions.:D
I have done a lot of Kayaking, both White water and Surf. Very little flatwater as I was a sort of adrenaline junkie. All my paddling has been in a Sit in Kayak with a Spray skirt [ONLY TIME I WEAR A SKIRT :D :D :D]
Firstly if there is a Canoe club near you they will often advise you and let you try out different Kayaks. Well at least the one I was a Member of in the 1970s did.
Several local Kayak shops [local within 100 km] will have days where you can try out a kayak--do not know if it is the same down south but I would think some shops would have demo Kayaks--perhaps on a hire and money back if you buy.
When you are ready to start tip over a few times and practice getting out of the Kayak underwater. With many Kayaks you will never tip over, but if you are swamped by a yahoo in a power boat you will know what to do and not panic.
You can but a dry bag to carry your camera [around 20 dollars], and keep air in this dry bag so it floats.
Plenty of Second hand Kayaks are on Gum tree. I keep watching Kayaks on Gum Tree. The fibreglass Kayak I was trying to sell for $195 with a old paddle did not sell.
Two singles may be a better option than a double, incase one of you wants to stay home while the other paddles. Otherwise get a double and one single. A couple of weeks ago there was a nice double at the Tweed Heads Tender Center. Do not know if that sold.
I know of Second hand kayaks up this way if you are planning on coming up--but you should get something local.
Plastic will take a lot of knocking around, but old Fibreglass Kayaks should be very cheap. I sold two Letman Slalom Kayaks, one for $100-- and one for $120--. And I got these cheaper. Saw one I would recommend in a local junk shop window for $70-- with a paddle. I have purchased Kayaks [I have had a lot of them, over a dozen] for as little as $20.
I would think something like a old KW7 kayak [fibreglass], or an old down river racer would be good for you.
My advice will be different if you are going to buy new and spend a lot of money. Ask me.
Do wear PDF-- also often second hand here. It was a requirement that you carry PDF in NSW waters. I assume it still is a requirement but have not checked recently.
A spare paddle -- one that can be carried in two halves-- between several Kayaks.
I do recommend you Kayak with others-- so if you tip out, some one can arrange resque.
Do practice paddling/controlling kayak close too shore before going out into middle of lakes.
When I was paddling in surf/ocean 3-4 days a week for nine months, I lost 7 kilos from my gut. I get painful knees feet, so Kayaking suits me more than walking.
If you have any more questions please ask me--time is nearly up on this computer.

Foxtel have had some really good docos on about world war 1 & 2. Was watching all about the Germans & what they did in the holicost. They got weman & children striped naked put them in a field & shot them all dead. They called it the holicostof buttels. They showed actual photos & footage ..then went onto the gas chambers & the death trains & how the Germans made more importance on the death trains then they did of there trains with munitions. There is noway on this earth that any modern day person could know or feel what our soldiers went threw in those 2 wars. They had a doco on the rats of turbrook I didn't see that but I taped it. Had interviews with survivors. The Germans where very very cruel & I can't understand how one person (Hitler) could get a whole country to follow him. & as for the Jews I think that was just a hitler hate for Jews nothing else. Although in the end Hitler showed his true colours. COWARD. Took his own life rather then face anyone.

Hey Jim these docos also had a lot on the big guns used in both wars & the developments made of them over the 2 great wars. Very interesting.
That book looks good.
I used to have a book , I think it was brought out by the Newcastle herald. It was all about the history on Newcastle & the Lake Macquarie area. Right from the beginning . Also had the attacks on Newcastle & the fighter plane that went down in mayfield it landed on a house. I think it was called Times past. Was a large paper paper back ish book. Was a yellowish colour. I've been trying to find it for years so I can read it again. You would like it Jim. Had the flying boats out at rathmines .. Also the old couple we used to live next to at old house Betty & Sandy. They lived through the shelling of Newcastle Sandy was working in at compsteal at the time he used to tell me about when they would hear the air siron & have to get to cover , said they could hear the shell wiz past.

That book called "Times Past" was brought out in 2005 by Ron Morrison.:) I happen to have it, bought it a couple of months ago on E-Bay second hand from a guy in Adelaide. It is no longer in print. You are welcome to borrow it if you wish Jason, I know you will look after it.:D The book is in excellent condition.
As I am a great fan of local history I also have more recent books brought out by Greg and Sylvia Ray also from the Herald. They are..
1) Recovered Memories...Newcastle and the Hunter.
2) Newcastle the Missing Years.
3)Destination Newcastle.
4) Changing Places...Newcastle and the Hunter.
They are the same size as Times Past and choca full of old photo's.:D
I also have a very interesting old book called "Front Stalls or Back" by K.J. Cork and L.R. Tod brought out in 1993. It features the stories and photo's of all the old theatres in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
ALSO and a real treasure this one, "Youngy Then and Now" the story of Young Wallsend and Edgeworth brought out by Sue Sokoloff who was a teacher at Edgeworth Public School in 1991. Interesting stories and old photo's of the Edgeworth area.:D:D

Speaking of Hitler, history will always remember him as a criminal of the worst type. I have read up a lot on him and the thing is IF he have stopped short of invading Poland and persecuting the Jews he would have gone down in history as a great leader. Unfortunately, like all criminals he did not know when to stop and kept pushing and pushing untill the Western powers (England and France) said enough is enough after he invaded Poland.

Jim, have you ever considered an E-book? They're cheap as chips and books are about quarter of the cost of hard copies. It's not the same as holding a real book but one can afford four times as many e-reads.

Just finished watching a movie called "A Fine Step" about Paso Fino Horses. I thought they had sped up the movie as the horses step at a rapid rate. They compete like spanish horses.
Anyrate, why I have mentioned this is a LandRover Disco 2 Series 2 is in the movies in several scenes, I tried googling the scenes but to no avail. any way here is a trailor of the movie for horse lovers.:D

So that's it.. Fired it up today & boy did it fill the shed with smoke , from the paint , it is the rite paint just needs to burn in.. When I put it back together there was is gaps down each corner so I filled those with epoxy metal. Didn't do around under the top plate but will have to as there is smoke getting out there. & gee does the flu get hot I touched it & burnt myself..It put off some good heat though so I think it will be just fine. I also want to fit some mesh in the bottom of the chimely & at the top for any stray embers cause nextdoors garage is right next to the top of the flu & its very old so I will be playing it safe..
If you do collect your own firewood in the bush [Land rovers are for the bush] you will all be able to cook in that shed on that terrific Pot Belly. Ours has not been installed yet. It has two hotplates. Idea was to save on electricity when cooking & heating house in winter. We have lots of trees [including dead ones] on our place.

Yeah I like history specially Australian & war .
Hitler was a real nut case beside the Jews. He had occult books on his bedside table when he committed Suicide showing how insane he was. But I will get into trouble from Inc if I start a discussion on that, so wont say more.

Hello Jim,
Good to hear that Jason is okay - not so good to hear that there Karen is not doing so well ... yet.
I had a job interview for one of two job vacancies with the same organisation yesterday at 1:00 pm. I found out today that I had missed out on both opportunities.
Originally back in early February I applied for a job with the organisation and had two interviews for the role. I was then offered the job informally - dependent upon my three referees. One referee was contacted then did not hear from the organisation for over a week. Then I received a telephone call where they decided they wanted to upgrade the role to a senior one and I had to reapply all over again. I did so and the interview was yesterday.
Within 30 minutes of being told I was unsuccessful I found at least 5 jobs on the internet that are within my skill set to apply for.
When one door closes...
Kind Regards
Lionel

Yep where still here. Where just living day by day..Still recovering from the accident financialy but where still going & theres food on the table & the bills are paid. Our TV blew up so we had to replace it ended up getting finance its a 50 inch a bit big but was a good deal..I feel a little better now still not the best but getting there..
The concerns with Karen are the new tablets she is on, She doesn't have anything that they are for , There a cancer treatment with bad side effects & we don't know why he has put her on them.these tablets are to replace the steroids which she is weening off now but will take 5 to 6 weeks to do. She has put some weight back on which im glad for though Karen doesn't like it.The new tablets cause week bones which isn't good for Karen as she only has to trip over her own feet & breaks an ankle easy cause of her past dancing. They also cause appertite lose hair lose & that has started for Karen she is loosing lots of hair everyday way way more then normal.he has to have 3 more blood tests she is going to try get one done tomorrow while she is down the road as she has a doctors appointment for me .The medication I am on is getting so hard to get & we have brought up everything we could in Newcastle & lake Macquarie , It took us weeks & weeks to deside & agree to these tablets as most of the drugs for Agoraphobia are very strong & have bad side effects & very addictive so the appointment is to see what we mite be able to change to ..Karen is also still getting very tired & sleeps for about 3 hours a day of an afternoon.. She wont take time off work at all.. She only has to be out for an hour shopping & is buggered. She has had today & tomorrow off as todays job the people are full up with the flue & tomorrow the lady had a cleaning frenzy on Sunday cause she was bored..The tablets are called Puri-nethol that Karen is on..
Ive just realised why I have all the adds & popups I haven't renewed my subscription .. I also have been on face page a fair bit as I am apart of the addmin for a site & page called Prepared Planet its a prepers site , Im not really a preper but I like the way of life as some of the things they do can be put into practice around the house in everyday. Im on there for the survival part & bush craft.. Anyone else here on face page other then young Tony with all his pics of the young ladies he hangs with :D.
Other then that not much is going on here. Oh Karen is taking her new tablets with her tomorrow to ask our doctor what the hell there for..
I know im starting to get tired with fred starting at 5.30 most mornings we wake with her elephatites through the house at 4.30 then up to get Cody up & ready so he can get a lift with Karen to school as he starts at 8 a fair bit .. Then its washing & doing all sorts through the day then getting T.. Im saving to buy a Hennesy Hammock The experdition zip asym..Oh & a warm sleeping bag Then I mite have a nice quiet nite out the back :p..
As for Harry I haven't done anything other then strip one of the new fender doors . I really need to get those front brackets which ive pretty much given up on as ive asked a few people on here that mite be able to help only to never hear from them .
The kids are still KIDS driving me insane .
I fixed the roof on the shed today as it leaked where the flu went through. Should be all good now . Probably find out tonight with the predicted rain..
The lump on Karens leg from the accident is still there & still tender also still has a very sore left shoulder. She also has new glasses as she had to have them tested again & now the left eye had to be bumped up 2 stages so they getting pretty thick. She found a realy nice dear pair of Alex perry glasses in the carpark down the road so she took them with her & had her new lenses fitted to them..Finders Keepers she said.
Hey Jim I asked the Kids about that bus on Mile road last Saturday they haven't heard anything either so they a really keeping it hush hush..We usualy hear just about everything that goes on around here.. Also jim if you get the time could you post a pic of that book Times Past..
Well I think that's everything...

G'day Jim,
Asperger's Syndrome and job interviews are not such a good mix. Asperger's and telephone based job interviews, like the first & third interviews were, are an even worse mix. Add to that my currently being blind and trying to read the interview questions sort of racked up a triple header. I still reckon I put in a good effort though - just not quite good enough.
Although it leaves me wondering whether a person's ability to do a job is proven at an interview? Or if it just proves the person is just good at job interviews. Stress & Anxiety associated with Asperger's are not good companions at job interviews. I was certainly amped up yesterday afternoon after I put the telephone down.
Yep Jim, the right job will come up.

Well Karen went to the doctors today & had a blood test after. The tablets she is on he said that the specialist is trying to find something that works for Karen & these drugs can be used for other things. The blood tests are to keep an eye on her white blood cell count as these tablet are know to attack the white cells. Also has to keep an eye on blood sugars as they can cause diabeties. He looked at Karens leg & told her to be careful las the big blood clot is still there & not to bump it as it could break it & then have it move through the body. Her shoulder is still sore as well.
She also got a script for me for new tablets if I can't get anymore of the ones I'm on now. The new ones are old fashioned as well meaning have to take 3 a day morning lunch & T.
Karen is quiet worried about the hair loss & it's just part of the tablets. I said well if ya go bald that good then ya can get lots of different wigs since she has always had curly hair. She could get straight ones long or short hair , different styles & colours. She wasn't to happy I said that dunno why :D..
Been working on Harry all day today.

Well worked on Harry again today. Put the fire on. Was good except wen it started to build heat the stink was bad. But was warm enough to take my jumper off. Dunno about the bad stink though. Will try it again but if the bad stink comes again I won't be using it again. I made a plate for the roof with a hole in it for the flu to go through I welded a bit to the hole about an inch & a half high all the way around it. I sealed the cap between it & the flu with sikaflex. It burnt off straight way & made it leak when it rained. So I cleaned it off best I could then used some of that epoxy metal to seal it. The epoxy I have used says it can handle heat upto 500 f. So should be fine & I used to to fill all the gaps on the sides of the stove & is standing upto that ok. The smell coule be some sikaflex left behind. The hole & flu are quiet a snug fit I made it that way. For the flu I used some gal steel down pipe from bunnings so the smell could even be the gal pipe. Dunno but if it doesn't get better I won't be using it again. But am working on Harry again I guess.

Was at the eldest daughters place today, she informed us she has successfully applied for a job as a Ranger over in the Pilbara near Karather in WA.:)
She is qualified to be a Ranger (no not the type that go around here and book you for parking) and applied for numerous jobs in NSW but because of lack of experience could not even get an interview.
Not to be beaten, she applied Australia wide and scored this job. Comes with a house and her transfer costs will be paid. It will mean she will be in an isolated situation, something like a 9 hour drive to Karather. I hope all goes well for her, so that means my family is slowly spreading with another daughter living in Bundaberg.
Wonder what the youngest daughter will do????
