You are being cruel, the car is running great at the moment, but descisions have to be made, because as I have already said the gearbox will not last!!!:(. Six months tops according to those who "know"!!;)

At the risk of being cold hearted.
You've got a 4WD with with a knackered transmission and a flaky engine, but it has great bodywork. Have I missed something here? At some stage you need to take a deep breath and make a decision from your head and not your heart, or somewhere lower!

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

The Walrus and The Carpenter, Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)

Unfortunately, when pigs fly your FreeLander will be a good reliable 4WD that is economical to run and a joy to own. :(

Have a think about trading it in on a Disco, before it's too late.

Not trying to be hard here, but I think you need to bite the bullet.:)

No mate, you are not missing anything, I read you loud and clear, the motor has had a major rebuild before I bought it, so I would expect some service out of it yet, the make or break will be the cost of a transmission rebuild, the results of that will determine the fate of the vehicle. It really boils down to the cost of the rebuild. Body is great as you mentioned, engine is as new and runs great, so my wife and I have descisions to make in the next week or two.:(:)

I had noticed that AUS,& to be realy honest i thought i would of been laught off the site with tail between me legs & even more embarrest...Then i thought well i mite get a reply or two & that would be the end of it..
The surport of everyone is so incredible & overwhelming & has helped me so much i cant even begin to tell use how much..I am more relaxed happier ,& interacting more with the kids i now go out in the yard & throw the footy around with cody & doing more with fred (cayla) Karen & i are getting on even beter than before..I said in an earlier post that i was going to use this thread as a diary ,witch i have & when i get down or have a bad day i go back to page 1 & read all that i have done & the encourigment i have received & it picks me up like nothing else, & i thought no one would be interested in reading it as it is a little dumb that what i have done is so little to most people it is such a HUGE thing for me..
I am having the time of my life with this thread & site in general..like i said happier, relaxed, wanting to try & do things is awesome for me.
I now have to find a goal to work towards ,something that is acheavable to me ... i realy want to get to be able to take the kids camping even if its only overnight, its just the getting there bit that frightens me, i dont want to tell the kids we going camping & then get halfway there & then panic & have to come home...i think thats a bit much to ask just yet but that is my big goal for one day..
And i realy want to be able to meet some people off the site eventualy & shake hands & say G'day..
I have had a couple of people text me & i texted them back witch is as awesome as anything as i can chat with someone other than Karen..
We had to deliver the papers this mornin as they came in late yesterday & i was feelin crap & didnt want to go do it but i pushed threw & got it done. if it had been a day like that before being open on here i would of just stayed at home & karen would have to do it on her own so i try harder to push threw now & make an effort..its working slowly..
I am just happy to have people to talk to me .i get excited to see an email to say that there is a reply to my post how dumb is that it is a learning cerve for me & i like it...
I'm happy to know people are interested enuff just to keep reading it all..

Mate, I am really and sincerely happy for you, I really mean that. You know something Jason, next time you are in Cardiff, stand on a street corner and watch people going about their business, they will be rushing here and there, just watch them, mate. You know what, EVERYONE of them has a story to tell. Most of them will be interesting stories too!!!

I have always thought of that ever since my first wife died at the age of 27 in 1974.:o

Go for it mate, keep going.!!!!!!!:MileStone:

As you know I am having troubles with my Freelander at the moment, but in the overall scheme of things it is nothing compared to what I have been through.:D:D

My day off today I am now heading down to Edgy Pub for a few cleansing ales and to solve the worlds problems with the regulars down there!!!

Cheers Mate!!!!:D:D

Yeah, mate dumb as!

Have been meaning to ask you a question as you've got more experience in this area than me.
Is it possible to be 'agraphobic' and claustraphobic' at the same time?
Might seem a silly question but here goes. For many years (20 or so) I was unable to go out where there were groups of people, even to events I really wanted to go to, kids school concerts, stage shows, singers and bands. I'd tell Kaye I'd go but as the time approached I'd get more and more stressed until at the last minute I'd cave and pull out. Many the time one of the boys has stood in for me and partnered Kaye to some event or other. The up side is that it opened their cultural horizons to go to Slim Dusty, Eric Bogle, MSO and other events whether they liked it or not.:) Kaye never cracked it, but it was usually a disapointment for her which made it even worse for me. I've sort of got over it now, still feel a bit uncomfortable sometimes but not a drama, a bit like going to church.
On the other hand, I get really stressed if I have to sit in the middle or window seat in an aeroplane and if the people in front of me tilted their seats back I'd probably freak out. It's the aisle seat or nothing for me.
A couple oy years back took the family up to Brampton Island for a holiday and thought I'd have a go at snorkelling. Hadn't used a face mask and flippers since I was a kid so went for a practice in the pool.
Put the facemask on, snorkel in mouth and ducked under water. Well, this was the strangest experience I've ever had. The whole world closed in on me, it was like I was in a cupboard and the walls were collapsing.:eek:Talk about panic attack!. It took me 4 hours in the pool slowly increasing the depth of water on the facemask till I could get my head under and it was still uncomfortable as hell. Got there in the end but only 'cos I was'nt gunna give up. Tried to go snorkelling the next day, gave it away, far too uncomfortable.
So there you go, is it possible to be 'agraphobic' and 'claustrophobic' at the same time? :)

Deano

banjo
17th February 2010, 12:28 PM
Hey deano i think it would be, i hate crowds & i start to panic in unfermilular places i have to know the way out & the fastest way out i sit next to a door way leading out or the toilets.the later for some where to hide. i have had karen goto places before i go so she can tell me where everything is, exits ,toilets, desk that sort of stuff.i would rather be in a broom closet on my own, atleast no one else could get in there so i would be fine knowing i would be on my own..I feel 'claustrophobic' in crowds & that everyone is watching me..I went to my brothers wedding reseption not the church , i got there last so i could sit at the door & my car wasnt to far away from that.& it took me three days to get there as i had to have dry runs as such plus i didnt eat, in case i felt sick,if i didnt eat there wouldnt be anything there to be sick with, that was just to get there & it was only 10 mins away from my place ,Then i had the trouble of the crowd & family & my family are all truck drivers the rough type & i knew i was going to cop heaps of flack off then all night..i stayed for most of the knight i just kept going outside for a smoke & a walk & i felt so much safer out side .
If i go to the docs wich is very rare as karen picks up my scripts i stand at the door & my doc comes & gets me from there, scared i mite catch something if i sit in the waiting room, the docs have told me to use the back door & sit in one of the rooms but i cant do that in case they need it so i wait at the front door & he comes gets me, its good i just wave at the ladies at the desk & they know i am there to see my doc & get everything i need to sign & i do all that while in with the doc that way i can just walk out & keep going ..
see i'm petrifide of throwing up so i always make sure theres a toilet or basin or i can get outside ,just incase i'm sick & can get out & know one would see me if i was sick..
So yeah i think it is possable to be 'agraphobic' & suffer claustrophobia at the same time.

Yeah, I listen to Deanoh on this and I must admit I agree with what he says. Problem is, its such a nice car, really nice condition, has had $10,000 spent on the motor before I bought it, if the tranny rebuild is closer to $3000 than $5000 I will think about it. If it is closer to $5000, it goes, no argument. the engine rebuild was done at ALL4X4 and they know the history of the car as it is a local one since new!!!:) as I have said before, Bob Hunt recommends that if I do a rebuild, he would install an aircooled tranny cooler, rather than a coolant cooled one which would eliminate any further problems that I have at the moment.

Na i didnt notice,thats good.
$5000 wouldnt be to bad if you plan on keeping the car for awhile & it could be your last car ,as you said before it suits the whole family with your elderly inlaws so realy $5000 & you wouldnt expect to have any more trouble so it could be worth it,it just depends on how long you want to keep it..
But then again thats coming from someone who spent inexcess of $10,000 on a series3 over 3 & a bit years..
i doubt i would get rid of it..but i'm sure it will cost me to keep, but worth it...

You folks are amazing, I suffer from Manic Deppression caused by abuse as a child also.
Stay true too yourself and listen too the inner you, I take my hat off too you both Takes Guts too post what you have by telling our stories and opening our hearts to others we can all let the comunity and our loved ones understand better were we are and how we feel.

Too get through every day for me is a battle , it starts when I get up and I just take every minute and every hour as it comes.

My biggest issue is anxiety and panic attacks, they really can leave me crippled and hidden away for weeks at a time. I am very fortunate that some members of this forum know were I am in my life and talk and visit me regulary.

Without these people in my life I would be very lonely.

You know who you are and I thank you from the bottom of my Heart.

Keep the faith and most off all talk and communicate how you feel.

Get it out of your mind and then read 4x4 everything, Camping, Driving, Fishing, doing this helps me no end.

You're not alone.
I'm normally fine with crowds and like mixing with people. But there was one time, shortly after I arrived to live in Bangkok, when it all got a bit too much, the complete unfamiliarity and the populaiton and congestion and change. I remember standing on a corner of a massive intersection in central Bangkok, surrounded by tall buildings, two huge roads each with 6-8 lanes of traffic going in each direction, plus one with an elevated motorway down the centre, plus the elevated light railway. People everywhere, and the amount of personal space over there is so much less than here. So there I am in the middle of 12 million people, holding on to a pole for a street sign, literally frozen to the spot. I didn't panic, I just stayed in position, let it all flow past me, and let my mind adjust. After about half an hour I was OK and was able to walk across the road and go for a coffee at Starbucks!
So it can happen to anyone.
The good thing is that I did adjust, and eventually felt safer in Bangkok than I do in Sydney. Now, Brisbane seems small by comparison.

Yeah, mate, I must admit I do because it is in such good nick and the motor has already been rebuilt. Motor runs like a dream, I am aware of the horror stories with regards to K series engines.

I bought some 'Bars Leaks" this morning down at Super Crap and put that in. The leak had sealed itself up before I put it in so it is only a pinhole one. I put the Bars Leaks in and let the car idle for half an hour and then took it for a couple of drives around the block and all seems OK. I would say what happened is the previous owner had the leak and put a radiator stop leak in and the chemical flush with a pressure clean has disturbed it. With a bit of luck all should be OK on that front.:)

Wifey is now down at Aldi's at Glendale, she wanted to go yesterday but I could'nt do anything about the car because I was working, so I would'nt let her take it. She was suffering shopper withdrawal symptoms real bad, and when I said it should be right to take down to Glendale, you should have seen it ZZZZOOOOMMMMM out the door, with me yelling after her, keep an eye on the coolant level, thankfully she does have brains in that department,:) unlike a lot of women who would'nt have a clue on things mechanical.:wasntme: I will still take it back to the radiator guy on Monday for a pressure test, I will also ask on the cost of fitting a low level coolant alarm, ALL4X4 want $200 to fit one on top of $200 to buy the alarm, if I am having radiator problems I am playing with fire driving without one as the temperature guage is quite useless I am led to believe.

Strangely enough I soon got used to it, it was just the unfamiliarity. We Aussies are used to lots of space and a large personal space. Thais are very careful not to touch each other when walking in crowded situations, unlike in Beijing where I got elbowed all the time! Come to think of it, I get elbowed in Myer more than I did in Bangkok...

Yeah, I was down at ALL4X4 last week buying a new coolant cap ($30:o) because the tranny fluid had softened the rubber on the old one and it wasn't holding pressure. I saw them on the counter for $200 and I asked the bloke "how much to install" and he said $200, which I think is a bit rich for a job that should take no more than an hour for an experienced guy!!:)

Na you would be able to do it yourself in an hour with basic tools but if you need any tools your welcome to use any of mine that you mite need..
only prob is you would have to pick them up & drop them off as i dont go to far..

We Aussies are used to lots of space and a large personal space.... unlike in Beijing where I got elbowed all the time!

... and how! We were there for the Olympics. 4 days at the Olympic Games, then 7 days living in southern Beijing in a dinky little backstreet hotel ... wow! A real eye opener. Living in the Chinese 'burbs ... no other westerners. We really enjoyed it (but it's not for everyone).

Felt like goldfish in a bowl (actually, it's so crowded it was more like a pill bottle than a bowl!) :)

Oh dear i think this is going to hurt...Where to start
Well i have been on a pension for a few years now because i have AGROPHOBIA servere panic disorder.i have trouble going out to the point where i have locked myself in the bathroom in colds sweats with my heart in my throat thinking i would passout or pee or crap myself..i also have done this when i have had people coming over to visit or in this case (people offering to come & help )..it has ruined my life & my immediate family (wife & kids)..you know we used to go up to our local bush (hillsborough ) when we had a nissan SWB kids loved it but it sometimes could take me an hour to get there & we only live literaly 5 min drive from it..
its been realy hard for us because our families think its a big joke .they seem to think its funny to take the micky out of me ..but 27 years of abuse mentaly, physically, mentaly sexualy..
So i dont deal with people to well cause if i have to leave or (hide)as such they dont understand so we just dont do it but its now realy taking its toll on the wife & kids..
we had to file bankrupt a few years back now & the way this rover is going it could send us there again..wife (karen is realy worried )
i had a friend who i used to do stuff with because he didnt care that if we where going some where if i needed to turn round & head for home he didnt say anything i would just settle myself down & then turnround again & keep going & catch up to him & this could happen a few times before i got there & sometime i couldnt get there but he was ok with it so we got on real good but he went & died on me & i have taken it hard & since then i havent been able to do anything realy & we used to go bush alot just for the day out to sugarloaf & out the back of glendale & up hillsborough man i miss those days we all had fun me the kids & wife plus my friend..we used to work for ourselves i am a diesel mechanic by trade havent touched tools since i done my trade 20 years ago but we used to wash & grease trucks that kept us going was good money cause we used to do about 20 trucks a week..
Now the best i do is going down to the local shops again 5min drive away but i do go for a walk round aldi the cheap shops & the paper shop gotta get me rover mags..but this rarely happens .karen does all my running around picking up parts & the like..
i seem to get on better with woman the shrink says its because most of the abuse i suffered was from my father..
hence the reason we only see a few family members ..
we thought it bout time i told use as we have had offers of help with the car..
dont know how i would handle it..but if it wasnt for karen i know i would be dead she saved me..
the best thing so far is my kids..
& i have to say i have never found so many people to offer to help when they havent even met us ..thats cool.
i can only hope that when the car is sorted i can get some part of our life back & start going back to the bush...
So we would like to say many many thanks to everyone who has offered to help...
Not trying to be sobby just thought if use new the problem it mite make it easier to understand why i cant except the offers of help but i (we) really appreciate them i dont know how i would handle people here for the time it could take...
THANKS Jason & Karen..

Over 16 years ago i tried to make an effort with my problem when it was at its worst i only had to have the phone to ring & that would send me running to the bathroom in cold sweats thinking i mite be sick or passout or worse crap or pee myself,i would think it was my father ringing before i even new who it was,,so i rang a surport group in newcastle for agrophobia, well the lady on the other end of the phone was extreemly rude & abrupt to me, as my mother & stepfather had asked me to go somewhere well guess what i paniced so i rang she was telling me just go just do it you idiot (i'm not joking) then laughed at me,that was it i felt so small & humiliated i hung up & never ever spoke about my problem ever again to anyone, not even family . Untill this origanal post was the first time & we have to say we where so shocked just to have 50 odd people click the thanx button..& now we have close to 6000 veiws & 300 replies we are enjoying it so much.we never ever thought we would have so much surport from people we havent even met .People offering advise ,encouragement , surport, we never expected any of this.It is so AWESOME there are no words to describe how much it has helped me we thankyou all so much..
Gee i even got a shock when so many people looked at my posts on my wheel carrier, i'm not the best welder but i enjoy doing that sort of stuff & its only for me so i not to concerned on how it looks ,Paint cover my welding..We have been trying to find some way i could work from home just to earn a few bucks to help out , well someone asked if i would be interested in making one for them & i thought that pretty good since i didnt think my work was upto other peoples standards,so i'm looking into it...
On another note Karen went out on wednesday for her lunchon & totaly enjoyed herself & wasnt worried for the first time about me at home alone stressing because of being on my own.fatty always rushes everywhere so as not to leave me to long by myself & now wednesday is going to be a weekly thing with the lady she went with as now i have all use to annoy now & keep me ocupied woohoo lookout wensdys lol..I have tried to use the chat thing at the top of the page but i think i am doing it wrong as i seem to be the only one there when i open it so i just talk to meself for awhile then give up..What ever happened to the little chat box thing that used to be at the top...We now have so many FRIENDS to chat with...

THANX
Jason & Karen

What have you got in your story to be embarassed about?
What a funny choice for a title.
You have laid your cards out on the table so eloquently there mate, that shows real courage and guts.
The fact that you have enough trust in us lot to tell your story, you should be proud mate, i am proud to be part of a forum that allows like minded people who have one love (namely a brand of car) but we can still take the time to be touched by intimate glimpses of each others lives, now that is truly amazing in this day and age.
This forum is definatley special because of the people in it.
Send my kindest regards to your good lady she is made of stirling stuff it would seem, we all need that in a relationship i believe.

Its funny you say that, karens best friend my cousin Vickie (chuckie) ,she got the nickname at school on a bus trip she get motion sickness bigtime but she now gets CHUCK WADDLE as she is short & round..anyway when i was building the rover i needed some doors ,well i found this guy down at WYONG who had heaps of parts & he was in behind the train station & with me not going that far in my dreams CHUCKIE said i'll take karen down & get them for you sweet i thought...Well when they got there it was on a couple of acres & the bloke with the parts owned it but was letting some of his friends live there.Well there was an old caravan & some old shiping containers everywhere & heaps of landys all over the place .ITS now known to us as feralville as the couple that lived there had no power no water nothing & the lady was walking around in a serrong & bikini top & looked as if she hadnt washed in months.there where living the van but fatty & chuckie said it looked like they had the backs off the landys as ,one as a loungroom one as a kitchen didnt have a bathroom anywhere that they could see so the two of them wouldnt walk anywhere as they recon there could of been human landmines around not just the dogs...
SO we have been coping heaps off chuckie ,AAAAHHHHHH use will be right use will end up on someones property living in old landys one as a bedroom one as a loungeroom one as a kitchen & so on..I'm never going to live it down that i got then to goto feralville to get some parts....

I think I have said it a few times now, but you are a very brave guy. The way you lay your soul down is inspiring to many of us. I am sure there are another dozen or so "Jasons" out there in internet land who read this and feel better because they learn from your example.

Hang in there mate, life is like a 4wd trip. Low range steep hills, muddy bogs, bone jarring crunches, occasional accident damage - but the view at the top of the hill is always worth it.

So when the going gets tough, air down those tyres, lock the hubs, select low range and let's get on with it. (P.S. I've got a winch if you get stuck;))

Nice to see you challenge yourself with a walk to the shop. How did you feel after?

I'll be sleeping in the back. Yeah she would love to come but has to stay home to look after the rugrats.

Not a lot of jobs that are essential, but I haven't traveled too far in Scruby, so need to do a few preventatives.

I will need to ensure cooling system is ok. New rad hoses and thermostat and I'll get the radiator flushed and tested - maybe even a rodding to make sure. New fan belt. (Probably don't need all that, but will carry the old bits as spares)

Full service - all fluids replaced.

Fit new tubes (I am running tubless Michelin XZLs but should really have tubes fitted on the old rims) Find a second spare (I may just carry a extra tyre and tube rather than a complete rim - haven't decided on that yet)

Fit HF radio (I have an old CODAN that will give me a bit of "peace of mind")
Fit CB radio
Fit GPS (I have an old GARMIN - no maps but works great )

Other bits and pieces that I can think of but no major work (I hope:angel:)

Had trouble reading through this one mate - the 'rain' between my eyes and my glasses got a bit heavy.

Thanks for being so honest - most of us have trouble saying how we really are cos we either don't want others to know or we think they may not like us.

Keep reading the good stuff on this thread cos that's what's real - not what the 'black dog' or past experiences would want us to think or feel.

Sorry things are busy with me and I can only add a few words of support here on a weekend.

when you get a chance keep the photos of the tyre carrier coming too.

thats the first time i have seen a freelander used off road.. Yeah they are quite capable, within reason of cause. They don't have a low range gearbox. What mine has is a five speed auto box with what they call "Hill Descent Control" for going down really steep hills. They are capable enough to go along Stockton Beach but as I said what that guy in the clip was doing was a bit ambitious.!!:):)

It's a 1978 109 Hartop Jas, I got 6 feet to relax in. (Only got front seats;)). Yeah the alternator is still pumping out the amps. Looks pretty old, but it aint broke. I guess thats the good thing about a 2.25 Diesel - it will run all day without any electricals. (once you get it started!)

I knew a bloke who slept in the back of his 88". He'd removed the bulkhead and he could get his leg's in between the 2 front seats.

I continue to appreciate this thread. Thanks. Welcome Mrs Banjo (I'll leave out the Fatty bit to be polite).

I saw a movie last night that reminded me of you Banjo, although the situation was actually quite different.
Its 'The Soloist' starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downery Jr.
Foxx plays a musically brilliant kid who gets a scholarship in to Julliard musical school for the cello, but becomes so obsessed with his music that he starts hearing voices and loses it and drops out, becoming one of the 90,000 homeless in Los Angeles, where he lives on the street, endlessly playing Beethoven on an old two-strong violin.
There he eventually meets Downey, who plays a newspaper columnist, and they develop an interesting relationship, sometimes great and sometimes rocky, which stretches and benefits them both. I laughed out loud at some scenes and was deeply moved at others.
As I said, its quite a different situation to you, but still interesting. Unlike most Hollywood pics this is real and the ending is not some happy clappy scene. Apparently its based on a true story written by the real columnist with the Los Angeles Times.
The reason I thought of you was at one stage Downey is telling a social worked he should get Foxx diagnosed by a psychiatrist and the social worker tells him to look at the troubled people in the room who have all been diagnosed by shrinks and it hasn't done them any real good because the biggest thing most of them need is a real friend. So I remembered your comments about this thread helping you to find friends.

Anyway, you might enjoy it...

Hey Gillie good to hear from you again,,Yes i'm worried about the move greatly as we still have nowhere to go to,But we applying for a housing commision house & fatty went & seen our local member of parliment & they are going try & help as much as they can as we have never used any government help before ,never thought we where bad enuff off but apparently we where intiteled to lots of help didnt know that so we are useing some now..but it worries me as we have only just got a trailer small not very strong, but in the past when we have had to move fatty & i usealy get most of it done in one day & only leave small stuff behind so i dont have to come back after the last load as such & we have most of the cleaning done & fatty just has to meet them at the old place to do the carpet cleaning...

Hey Banjo, how's the house hunting going? Got a quote from that mob in Queensland on a Low Level Coolant Alarm, $180 delivered, guess thats $20 cheaper than AL4X4. Went to Super Crap as you suggested and when I asked for one of those alarms, the staff looked at me as if I had come from Mars. THEY DID NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!!:o so I upstakes and went over to ISP, behind the Redrooster shop at Glendale and the guy there knew what I was talking about but said they didn't keep them, he suggested a Four Wheel drive shop.;) Freelander is booked in next week to have the tranny repaired, will take a major, major hit in the wallet.:( SWMBO and me had a big discussion about this during the last few days and we decided to go ahead.:)

Thats great about the tranny..super crap have an alarm for low water for your wipers..i know repco has them i seen the in one of there catalogues we done a couple of weeks ago.its the same thing when the water doesnt touch the sensor it goes off it would do the same for coolant & i think it was $19.95 or $21.95...they have variety of differant one for all thing..

The thing that worries me about using one of those alarms is maintaining pressure in the coolant system. In theory you could put the sensor in the overflow container, but how would you seal it off? Oh, and when I get the Freeby back lookout Stockton Beach!!!!!!

Yeah mate, sorry to hear about your housing problems, the stress must be terrible. As far as druggies are concerned I had enough problems on that front years ago with my step son, it was a terrible time and it was a battle we lost and the drugs won. We brought up five kids (all adults now, of cause) and every one of them has a different personality, the other four managed to stay away from drugs after seeing the damage it causes. Although I do suspect my daughter did some experimenting.:(

I wish I could help you on the housing front, but unfortunately as the Landrover is keeping me broke I don't have any investment properties to rent out. Also bringing up five kids tends to keep you broke.:) Willing to supply labour to help you shift if you need help though!!!!:D

As far as taking the Freeby on Stockton Beach is concerned, I am not an experienced person on that front, but a neighbour let me drive his Jeep on the beach a few weeks ago. So when I do go (being a novice) I will go with experienced people until I build up confidence!!!:)

Hey Aus' ... the overflow is not the place to put the Enginesaver. It has got to be installed in a pressurized part of the cooling system. Like a top radiator hose. Did enginesaver have a freeby kit where the sensor replaces a bleed plug, or fill plug ??

... spent yesterday arvo down Stockton ... had to recover a Toymota HiLux stuck 1/2 way up the back (soft side) of a really steep dune ... nothing to much out of the norm, except the d*&k was towing a trailer !! He tried to back down & jack knifed the trailer around and under the back of the Hilux .... ... the Hilux was sitting about 30deg to the left, sideways

... using the trusty camp shovel, we dug out the trailer & lifted it square to the back of the Hilux and he backed down and jack knifed AGAIN ! (the trailer drawbar was past 90deg to the towbar! I tried to convince him to a) let his tyres down (NOPE!), and b) unhitch the trailer and wheel it down by hand (NOPE!) ... then he goes forward with LOTS of loud pedal and swings around to drive out the way he came in and dug himself a grave ... instead of stopping he just gave the poor 'lux a caneing and eventually clawed his way out going forward and back numerous times for about 10min, past where we were parked ... we just drove out, no wheelspin while this turkey was throwing up his own personal sand storm . No idea.

Now, towing a trailer down the beach is ok, but I wouldn't have even tired that dune without a trailer ... it was about 40deg of soft power sand (one look at the dune would tell you it wasn't going to happen). He was right at the back of the sand dunes, and if we hadn't happened along, he'd still be stuck there! What was he thinking!! ??

We WON'T be trying that out when we get you on the beach :)

Thanks for that Fluids I have EMailed them again to ascertain whereabouts the sensor is fitted for a Freeby, they say on their site that for other Landrovers it is a screw in type. What I want to know is:
1) Is the Freeby also a scew in type?
2) If it is, where does it screw in?

I guess there must be a plug somewhere in the system, up high of cause.
As far as dimwits towing trailers in the dunes is concerned, did he thank you for your time and effort. I bet he didn't!!! Actually a slab of beer would be the least he could do to show appreciation!!!

Aus' ... yeah, he DID thank me with a hand shake and lots of grattitude ... unfortunatley, there's no bottleshop at that point on the beach! :)

I was happy to help ... what goes around ... by the time I stopped, walked over to ask if he needed help (and he did!) and walked back to the disco, my 9yr old had the recovery bag out of the back and had the shovel out ready to go ! :)

Look for a screw in plug up high in the hoses, pipes or header tank.

Just reread your earlier thread Fluids, the expansion tank in the Freeby is pressurised and I have read articles where people have drilled holes in the side of the expansion tank to put the sensor in. I am not sure I would be happy to do that though. There is a small bleed hole in one of the heater hoses where it goes into the firewall. Its to be used if you are flushing the system out to let air pockets out. It has a plastic bung that you unscrew to let air out and screw back up when coolant starts to flow.:):) As far as the dimwit on the beach is concerned, at least he showed some gratitude even though it appears from what you are saying, he learnt nothing from the exercise.

Hey Banjo, when you are feeling down have you tried chilling out with music. I have just spent half an hour listening to Roy Orbison (showing my age now) as I am home alone at the moment and I find his music quite relaxing.
Do you have a favourite singer, being younger your tastes may be different to mine, but if you just put a CD on sit down and listen and become involved in the music when you are by yourself, you can relax and just let the music wash over you. Works for me!!!!:D:D

Being an old bloke, I don't know much about MP3,s and I am surprised you like Smokey Dawson and Slim Dusty, not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I am more into Dire Straits, Led Zepplin, Fleetwood Mack, AC/DC in other words more of the rock stuff of a few years ago. So there you go, each to their own!!!:D:D It all depends on my mood at the time, I do like some Country and Western, but the more upbeat type!!!:):) Now when you talk about modern crap, the worst "music if you can call it" is Rap, Yuk!!! They had these giant screens so people in the "cheap seats" could actually see them.:o When I said to him "Why bother, just get a DVD and watch it at home", he said it was worth it for the "atmosphere". Well guy i had one of my crappiest nights last night i went to bed upset sounds wussy i know but i was more ****ed off with myself than anything i havent slept yet just laid there i dont get back up as i make to much noise & i dodnt want to wake the others. It seems my ****edup brain is doing me in again i dont realy know how to convers well i ****ed dave off in my canoe thread & he was the first person to pm me with his number, i didnt mean to ,i took sleeps post the wrong way,i cant think i have been walking around in the house feeling useless & i know i'm starting to get to fatty & she is stressing & doesnt need it..i hate my life i hate what i do fatty i am so scared its not funny.i hate what happend to me cause i have only ever spoke to older people & it was 90% all about sex thanx to my father so i am haveing trouble trying to speak with you guys i class all of use as friends & use have all helped me so much & fatty.i get PMs off sleeps & aus so i feel a little closer to those two i dont mean to offend any of use thats just how i feel & i know use are all friends.i have no idea what to do what to say or what to write without upsetting anyone..I'm **** scared for young cody as he is a sensative kid & all his friends just **** on him i can see him ending up like me i"m worried micayla mite relaps back to panic attacks if we have to move away & she wont be able to get back to school & again end up like me . I am worried for fatty as she has the bigest shoulders she carries this family every where & it to much for her..I used to get on with my brother to some degree but it was all his way & it work as he treated me like my father did & i just did what ever he wanted .i used to go to his place everyday that way he wouldnt call in at our place ..he was allways drunk & everything was sex sex sex that probably why it worked as thats all i ****in know i use to send him all my rude pics jokes & he would send me some ..Again FATTY saved me by getting me away from it **** this woman is so strong..I think this will be my last post for some time as all i seem to do is stuff up i read things then take them the wrong way all the bloody time & write thing that dont seem to be the right way allway come out the wrong way.. Fatty use to have a friend no we use to have a friend her name was gail i trusted this lady with my life outside of karen that is & we where close & i realy miss her & the friendship we had a falling out never been the same since she never came back to our place & we never went back to her place. The lady that karen went out with on wednesday has aked her to clean her house on fridays so thats good she get $50 for it & she is trained for it she use to work at the wallsend hospital done all th training there before it closed down.& i feel like crap as i cant help to get some extra cash in i use to do up cars & sell them & it was good money for us but to do that again i would have to sell the rover & we just wont do that not this one we did it with our last one & it has taken to long to get here with this one & it will probably be our last car..,So i think this will be my last post for some time i will just read some & stay out of things....

jason loves technology in mobile phones nothing else no big ass tvs no blue rays (not that we could afford them) but phones OMG he drives me crazy. To me its just a means of keeping in touch .To him it's like a lifeline.
we have been with optus for a long time on plans so when he can he upgrades,no worries.Just before christmas he got an iphone the local dealer (who is great he knows about jasons problem and lets me sign the contracts even though it's in jason's name) said he will love it .No suprises there.
Contacts, music, games and more games .Seriously i think he loved it more then me lol.It helped to occupy him when i had to go out .
Now the sad bit we had to sell it i ran into a ladies car in the toyota i pulled out of our driveway and she was parked opposite in the bus stop was only goin slow so was only minor damage and paint transfer but we needed to put a claim in so the iphone went.
Everyday we hear i miss my iphone.
Not long after i could update my plan no extra payments on both so i got him another one .:D Happy days again .
Then i received our next bill it was over $500 :o usually they less then half that .Our daughter who was also on our bill on a plan had gone WAY over texting.I have learnt my lessen she is now prepaid. So again the new iphone went.Still i hear the i miss my iphone ,yes i know i answer. At least we are not paying extra for them both still just our cap plan.

crappy night aside (we all have nights like that from time to time), I like a phone that I can ring up and answer, no extras. The best mobile I ever had was my first, commonly called a brick, about the weight of a house brick but a little bigger. When there was poor reception you could through the lot on the middle of the car roof and away you go. Worked better than any phone I have since.
I know
"FATTY" I miss my phone.

Hey Banjo,
Have you thought of seeing a trick-cyclist (pshychiatrist) god you must be suffering a huge amount of depression in your situation not going out feeling aggro, not sleeping it must all add up at the end.
As well as dealing with the cockhead across the way there.
And maybe they could advise you on coping skills as well which may well give you some more capability of getting a grip on life rather than it having a grip on you like it does, As it just isn't fair me old mate you guys need a life outside of your illness as it is obviously very controlling of what you guys do and it leads you to stressing about the kids and how they will cope with life,
It could be good all round.
You definatley need to compute what happened to you previously at the hands of your old man, and they can help with that, i am not sying it would be easy but wouldn't it be a beaut thing to be able to move beyond that at least and get you in a more positive place.
Now i want you to know what happened to you was not your fault and it's important for the other members whom you talk to just let you know that as well, it just re-affirms the value you lack in yourself(but we know you have heaps to offer), You have things to offer the planet Banjo, you have the skills i don't to overhaul my engine so we want you to get up and at em and on them spanners at some point lol !!!!
Sent with sincerity mate regards Andy.

Yep got it in one he has no confidence in himself what so ever.everything he does isn't good enough just look at his car he thinks its crap .he doesnt know how to except a compliment, you give him one & he says na its crap, everything has to be perfect. He does have a grip on it its just every now and then he has a tizzy usually only last a couple of hours at most & usually not bad at all, I think it might be because he is finally getting it off his chest for once instead of telling me all the time , he hasnt even began to scratch the surface of his life but i doubt he will tell you all everything but he will tell you some ,he has spoke to me about telling you some more .The first was when his granfather died,The second was when his grandmother died & now today the third.. he is just like most parents where there kids are concerned..This is probably the third time in 22 years that i have seen him this low, i didnt even know he posted it today for awhile, i was out he usually tells me but must of felt comfortable with you all as he told you before me thats a huge step guys he doesnt tell anybody..most of the time he controls it & we go about our stuff as usual the kids & i ,i mean & sometimes he does to..
Well we are going to look at a house tomorrow afternoon its a 4 bedroom place but it doesn't have a garage so i can see him saying no before we even get inside..

Hey Jas,
Just got in from work. What is the first thing I did?

(Poured a scotch and coke)

OK,OK,...what is the second thing I did...

Logged on to see how Jason is. I thought I confused you last night with my waffle...I was a bit crapola too.

The thing is, mate, we won't always understand each other - (especially after my third scotch!). That is the thing about relationships. Its a bit of a bumpy ride. I am sure you and Fatty arent always on great terms (although it would be hard to not love her for long!:ohyes:)

Its like that with friends too. You say shid you dont mean or stuff gets taken the wrong way. Doesn't mean things are bad it just means you gotta talk more.

You may not feel like posting for a while - thats ok too. But when you are ready - we will be too. And it might not be me, or ausfree or fatty or lardy, or all the others here it might be someone new to this thread. We all care about you mate.
I've got a good friend I've known since 1976. We dont see each other as much nowadays but when we do its like it always was. Friends!

We wont judge you mate....we're just here to talk....about whatever you like....remember there is no EMBARRASSMENT here.

I wish I had something I could say to make you feel better.

Its ok to be sad Jason.

Go and give fatty a cuddle....Ive got a sneaking suspicion she has the hots for you!:D

Your friend

you guys are funny i think jas left some bleeps out earlier but i can take it you all understood.Even with his bad spelling lol.Stuu it was signed by the secretary who has been there as long as we been with them at least they gave us an extra 5 days because they posted it ,that was SO nice i thought.
Can't get in any earlier to docs thats ok wednesday 4.15 will have to do still waitting on school councillor and the psychologist letters for fred for her same problem when she was having trouble i am willing to use anything i can at the moment.
On a lighter note something funny Jason's medication was a nightmare to get he didn't want anything addictive so our doc an i looked and we found one non addictive it is given to kids to help anxiety it stops bedwetting so i never have to worry about that .....now if the doc will just let me keep giving it to him when he gets old......hehehe

I think it is good to be cautious about what medications you do take. Last time I was with my GP I told her that I questioned a medication she had put me on, so I told her I did not like taking medications, upsetting her, and she said to me "Do you want to find another doctor." I said no--I know most are worst than her, and if I found a better GP I would happily change doctors without telling her.

I have a book that doctors & Pharmasists have called Mims Annual that lists all side effects of various medications. The first one I had I got from my GP down in Sydney 25 years ago. He would still be my GP if he moved up this way, as we moved out of Sydney in 1990. Best move we ever made. We have since up dated our MIMS with a later one we saw second hand in a second hand op-shop. The other day my GP gave me a smaller up to date one but sadly a less comprehensive issue of Mims.

As I have Pseudo-gout ["Pseudo" means false] that hits me in feet or knees regularly, I have been using "Indocid" for over 15 years. My GP wanted to put me on something different. Indocid can have nasty side effects so there isgood reason to change. However, I asked her about side effects of this new medication that she wanted to give me, and that is what upset her.

Trouble is I was a Pathology Technician, and am very aware of kick backs to doctors. Drug companies will give very big kickbacks to doctors to prescibe a lot of heir new wonder drug.

So I was not sure of changing, from what works.

The only other medication i do take is for the stent in my heart [aspin & plaxix to stop clotting] & blood pressure, and am stopping the blood pressure medication, Coversyl, when I run out of it, but will regularly check blood pressure. I had surgery last November, and they put me on this medication while I was in hospital, as my blood pressure was high. But now I am going to stop that one.

So anyway I do agree with Jason being careful to get something that is non-addictive, and spending time getting the right stuff. I think that is very smart move. And bed wetting may not be such a problem in old age. Just wear nappies :D:D:D . I did work in a Nursing home for a while, and did have to change a few people who wet themselves, but would never have wanted them to have medications to control wetting themselves.

Well the unit is defanetly out now your not aloud to park in the carport between business hours as the pawnbroakers pay more rent plus theres no storage for my tools...or me dog..The big 4bdrm place is ok only has offstreet parking all on concrete witch is all of the backyard has a small storage shed no security in the backyard,,its a weird shape in side as you have to back track threw the house to get to some of the rooms its got wires coming down alot of the walls as it used to be a call centre (no not that kind) i wish.
The 3bdrm brick place at the end of our street is so small if you farted in one of the rooms you would blow the windows out fatty said...Got in to my doctors, one of the funniest bastards you will ever meet for a doctor swears like you've never heard fatty rools up with me papers to be filled in & he straight away goes oh great fking housing papers the most stupibest form around so he startsfilling them in & its f this f that, but he did fill them in to make out i am worse than i am to help, then as fatty is leaving he goes yeah good luck with that sarcasticly....

Evening all. Nice photos Aus. Love that one on the beach.
Your shed was so organised Jason - I hope your next one will be as good.

I am having a better day too :) :) I gave the boss my true feelings. He let me vent, expressed his support for me and we agreed to move on. Not a win for me but he let me have my say, which is good. I will learn to "let it go"

G'Day Paul, yeah that one on the beach is Stockton beach, well known to the locals up this way, the wreck in the background is of the"Sygna" which was wrecked in a big storm in May 1974. (I remember it well). It was a bulk carrier, I think about 54,000 tonnes (could be wrong). Anyhow when I get my Freelander going again (Going in next week to have a transmission rebuild, cost to do OUCH!:o. Anyway, I will replace the photo of the J**P with one of a Landrover, even though the purists think a Freelander is not a "proper" Landrover.:):)

Yeah talk about plastic, you didn't notice Banjo but even the front mudguards on the FL1 are plastic, don't know why they did that. Anyway I sent another EMail with a question regarding the Low Level coolant sensor and they haven't answered. They quoted $180 delivered to the door, and there is full fitting instructions, as I said before ALL4X4 wanted $200 for one plus $200 to fit, can't be that hard to fit. I will get the tranny out of the way and then look at it, anybody who knows FL1's recommends the fitting of a low level alarm. Have you got one fitted to your series?:):) To answer your question Paul, the motor has been rebuilt before we bought it, thats the main reason why we decided to rebuild the tranny, otherwise we would have unloaded it, motor runs like a dream.:D:D

Hey, whilst your clearing the decks , maybe a good chance to flog some unused stuff off on ebay and make a few extra bucks - just an idea:angel:

It's amazing how much stuff I have found lying around and made a couple of hundred especially the stuff kids have outgrown, old toys etc.

One good thing about moving (not too many) is that you can chuck out all the rubbish that we all seem to carry around. I also tend to find stuff that I haven't seen for a few years.

Good luck with it all.

Hi Aus' ... fwiw, look at this link ... Brass Plugs (http://www.lrautomotive.com.au/contents/en-us/d632.html)

Does your FL1 bleed screw look like the black plastic one in the picure at the bottom of the page (with the brass screw) ?? If so, it's the same as the one in my D2 ... (even says "Discovery Series 2 and Freelander") ... I replaced my plastic one with a brass one (failed just like described on that web page ... new hose & brass bleed screw to fix it). Brass one cost me around $13 from Karcraft in Sydney (+ a new hose). Fitted the brass one until I get an Enginesaver, or other (EMS1) fitted up ... don't trust the plastic ones !! I caught mine just as it failed ... could have been a cooked engine as SWMBO was driving

If it is the same, then the Enginesaver kit for the Td5 D2 will work for the FL1 ... as long as the bleed screw in the FL1 is at, or very close to the highest point in the cooling system.

Hope that helps a bit.

... and are the FL1 front mudguards really plastic !?? Go on ... ?? Wow!

Phew,

Wow, just finished reading the whole thread, and had to restrain myself a few times, from replying til I got to the end. It's taken a few days.

Jason, I don't feel you have anything to be embarrassed about (except driving a green series ;):p), but I have enough empathy to see why you do. Just remember mate, we're all part of the Land Rover family here and as such support each other. You have had to face more personal challenges than most, but you have plenty of support from Karen. She must be one hell of a good mate. Do you trust her? I presume so, if she has enough confidence in you, why can't you take her word as to your value to your family, friends here and the world in general? I'm not trying to tell you how to think, more things to think about. We all have differing skills and problems, but as a team we need to play to each others strengths and weaknesses.

I don't believe that anyone here will judge you by your problems, I have gained an immense respect for you and Karen, both individually, and as a family.

Remember that the written word can be incredibly powerful, but has limited abilities to convey humour, sarcasm and other forms of wit. It is so easy to take things the wrong way in a forum such as this. Before hiding in humiliation at your words, or taking offence at others, seek clarification; good friends are too hard to come by, to lose over a petty misunderstanding. I'm glad you changed your mind about not posting, and hope we here can continue to help you with your problems, as I am sure you would help others in ways that you can. It would be wonderful to see you out wheeling with other AULROians some time in the future. In the meantime, perhaps you could fit Aus' low coolant alarm for him when he gets it.

I hope your life continues to improve and that the house hunting ends soon and to your satisfaction. As everyone here has expressed, if I can be of any help to you I would be proud do so.

All the best to you both.

PS I dont think that a low level alarm to suit a washer bottle could cope with the temperature of the coolant, and at $20 ish from Supercrap I wouldn't want to rely upon it.

Hey sleeps did you get a day off today i seen you where on this mornin & now early tonight...Your lucky...or was it the typical sicky...

G'day Jas

Nah rostered off today.
Spent most of it fiddling around with my new tyrepliers. Thought I'd try and learn how to change a tyre.Managed to break the bead but couldn't get the tyre completely off the rim. Ended up wacking myself in the head with a tyre lever:o Split my head just above my eyebrow:bangin: - looked like a scene out of Rocky. So I gave it away for another past time
No pics - its too embarrassing:blush: Would have made a good youtube video:lol2:
Novices:Thump:

Gave up the smokes a few months back - not doing all that good but try and keep off them.

No stitches i hope ..
i just had to take 5 tyres of there rims about 4 weeks ago,i dont have tyre plyers i just put the tyres on the ground near my car & drive on to the tyre only breaks the beads then use tyre leavers to get them off ..once you get the hang of it you will be able to do them in about 10 mins..

Hello Jason and Karen. I have been reading your thread each day and, ya know what? I see progress every week. Well done to you.

I hope you find a nice home soon.

John

The quickest way to seat a tubeless tyre is a tin of morteen fly spay.
Once the tyre is on the rim spray inside with the morteen & around the rim edge walk back about 4 feet while spraying then light the spray while aiming at the tyre, it ignites & then pop its seated.

Breaking the bead was easy enough but just couldn't lever the rim out from the tyre. Or tyre off the rim. Must be my wheezily little office arms :D
I lubed it up too but just couldn't get it off. The tyre was a 205R16 so nothing particularly truck like.
I know it should only take 10 mins. I gave up after bonking my head and 2 hours of buggerising around:mad:
Will give it another go tomorrow (Might wear my bike helmet:angel:) Pity your 1000km away - you could show me:)

If you have both sides off the bead - try to put the opposite side to where you are using the tyre irons down inside the centre of the wheel - that will give you a bit more 'gap' to work with.

Sleepy, make sure the beads (both sides) are in the well of the rim before levering it off. The tyre will only come off one side of the rim, usually the outside; unless the rims have been reversed on the centres. Do the tyres have tubes?

Yeah thanks drifter - I did that too.

YouTube- Tyrepliers Levers

This was what I was trying to do. He makes it look too easy. Got to 2.07 and just couldn't get the tyre to collapse on itself like he does. Could only get a few inches of bead over - then ouch:o:D

ahhhhhhhh, :whistling::whistling::whistling:

<<insert sound of penny dropping>>

Edit: Just checked again - I was trying to get it off the outside:( bugger

It is a tubeless D1 steel rim. (Not reversed)

Paul, once both beads are broken, lay the wheel on the ground, outside up (see my previous post). Prop the lower bead up with a piece of wood ,or anything handy, so the bead is level with the well. Push the upper bead into the well with your foot/feet/toes, at the same position, lets call that 6 o'clock; insert two levers side by side at 12 o'clock, where the valve just happens to be. Only the tips of the levers need to be in the tyre, and if there is a tube be careful you don't pinch it with the lever. When you have the levers pulled back across the rim, remove one lever. You may have to release some pressure from the lever to do this. Reinsert the lever you removed, about 2-3" from the lever still in the tyre, repeat until the bead is loose. It gets easier with each bite. Once the first bead is completely removed, take out the tube (if applicable) then stand the tyre and rim vertically with the remaining bead in the well of the rim. Insert a lever between the top of the rim and tyre and pull the lever to horizontal; this is usually easiest if you're standing on the side that you are removing the tyre from. You may need to put your foot against the top of the rim as you pull the lever. When you have the lever horizontal, bash the bead with a rubber mallet, alternating each side of the lever.

Hope this is some help to you, it's my first time cyber tyre changing. Let me know if it works for you, then we'll go on to lesson #2 .....putting the beggars back on. ;)

Sorry about hijacking your thread Jason. My turn to be embarrassed:angel: (If only my issues were so simple, says banjo)

Thanks Ian, I followed this to the red bit. Just couldn't get that lever back further than vertical and a bit. No way was it moving back any further with my puny arms:angel: The tyre is a crappy bald thing and is old and hard so perhaps that is my problem. I figure I can do a bush repair if I can get it this far - even if I carry a tube. On my Bourke trip, I was intending to carry 5 wheels and a 6th tyre (to save weight) but I think I'll carry the 6th wheel and tyre (and a couple of tubes!)

Oh, and this is a tubless rim. (D1 steel)

Anything past vertical should do the trick mate. If your taking a loose tyre and tube, insert the tube in the tyre and inflate enough to keep the dust out of the tyre.
