Have a closer look guys......... if you've been riding a horse with a rug on what do you expect? :)

cheers, DL

Yep, saw that.

None of my night horses ever had a rug and were never that polite.
Some were mongrels that would try to kill you but they had to be tamed.
Trick was when you came a gutsa, never let go of the reins or they would destroy the sadle bashing around the scrub.
Besides that they are beautiful creatures.

A flash one... one off trial vehicle for Accident Investigation/rescue

Thought it may be of interest to someone... The last of the series 3's was being phased out as I started... they were mainly grey and white in colour, 109 wagons with a cage section in the rear and a dead mans door in the divider. (a door that can be opened to allow a body to be carried when required)

Two Queensland Police Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on the Cunningham Highway, just west of the Amberley Air force Base at Ipswich.

The officers were using hand held radar devices to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when their radar guns began reading 500 kms per hour.

The officer attempted to reset the radar guns, but they would not reset and then turned off. Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to an RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at the QLD Police Headquarters the Patrol Sergeant fired off a complaint to the RAAF Base Commander.

The reply came back in true RAAF style:

Thank you for your letter. We can now complete the file on this incident.

You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down. Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked on to your equipment location. Fortunately, the Senior Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position.

The pilot also suggests you cover your mouths when cursing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech.

Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the left radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.

Thank you for your concern.
Wing Commander Brown, SFO
RAAF. Amberley. Ipswich, Qld.

I disagree, it obviously had traction to get up there...

But would impound it for failure to maintain effective control of vehicle (steering)..

on a serious note, wooden spoke wheels, old steering etc -- how badly broken would this car have ended up after a few years of this!!.

Good point, digger. I was thinking of loss of grip by the front wheels.

Re wooden spokes, they are strong in compression so maybe they could take it. Once or twice.

Steady on. One of my favourite cars was an old Fiat Uno that my wife and I dove all around Europe, INCLUDING on the German Autobahn. The old 700cc engine did a great job, as long as we stayed in the right hand lane.

On the one occasion that I did get stuck behind a truck and tried to overtake it, it was clear for at least a kilometre behind me, and in the two seconds it took to pull out into the next lane, there was a BMW on my tail, standing on its brakes, horn going furiously :p

Certainly got us places in city centres and villages that the Disco couldn't go.

Judging from the background, the vehicle was not all that old when the picture was taken. It is a Ford T, and the high alloy steels used mean that it is unlikely to end up broken. Wooden wheels were in widespread use by US manufacturers almost up to 1930 or even later, although virtually unknown elsewhere after 1914. They were just as strong as any other type of wheel - and were built to the strength needed for the application, same as any other wheel. They were generally trouble free, but especially in dry climates the wood tended to shrink, allowing the wheels to work and squeak. This was usually fixed by removing the clamping plates and inserting sections of hoop iron between the spokes before reassembling.

(I think the attitude is the result of excess load behind the rear axle rather than any hooning!)
