Good home for those 'surplus' C-130 aircraft that the gov't "donated" to our nearest neighbor...

Natural (?) disasters are going to take a bigger toll on life than they have in the past, simply due to population density, apart from el Nino / Global Warming effects.
I don't have a problem with Defence Forces spending big on defence & rescue' of civilians as an on-going Training Exercise.

I was a meccano fan as well. Still have some of my dads bits - it was his favourite toy growing up. I loved the wind up motor, until i got a battery operated one with a battery box. Dad and I spent a lot of time playing around with the wind up motor and changing pulley sizes around on the cars I would build.
My boys are into the lego.
Lego / meccano - it is about the creativity.

Earlier this week I was looking at my Buz set (Australian-made version of the Meccano) and wondering what to do with it. I got it about 60 years ago. It's a large 9/10 set in a metal box like this:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/10/295.jpg

It came with an open frame electric motor which we used to run off Dad's Scope soldering iron transformer.

I don't have any grandchildren to pass the set on to.

For making buildings, we used the Aussie made Bilda Brix which came out in the late Forties/early Fifties. http://www.collectingbooksandmagazines.com/bilda.html

Interesting, I have never seen a BUZ Set. I wonder if it is compatible with Meccano, as in whether the holes are the same size and line up (Hole spacing)?

Either way it could be worth quite some dollars, as old and even more modern Meccano is getting really expensive. I just recently paid $800 for a pristine Number 9 French Meccano set from the late 80's / early 90's as a Father's day present for my dad. And that was cheap!

Yes, it is compatible with Meccano. I added some Meccano many years ago. I also have a steam engine (Meccano) to use with it.

My set is not pristine but the box is pretty good. When I get back home next week, I'll take some pics.

I think I was about 10 years old, I was when I got it. Dad bought one of these Renown steam rollers http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/renownroller.htm for me in 1948 (the year I was born). I still have it.

My Dutch is a bit rusty, but I think the meaning is pretty clear :)

Very roughly: "Shame for the chook that he walked in front of us just as we were trying to decide what to cook for the men"

Kippensoep = Chicken soup

Some Dutch words aren't too hard to translate.

Not exactly new, this sort of error - a recent Antique Roadshow item appraised was a very elegant silver teapot, made in England in the eighteenth century, and decorated with a large Chinese character on the side, as was fashionable at the time - the word 'top', and engraved upside down!

for when the tractor breaks down
.

Back in the 70's I used a S1 with top and doors removed and windscreen folded flat to harrow in seed on the 3:1 batter slope of a new dam we had built - driving across the slope. Was such a side slope that I was actually sitting on the side of the car reaching in to the wheel...... (started off on level ground in low 1 and slipped to the side as the slope increased). I think these beasts have been having a double life as tractors for a long time now, great pic

After the 2nd WW, Willys and I also think landcover aswell, marketed their vehicles as an alternative to owning a tractor. Willys had an assortment of implements that one could attach to their vehicle for farming purpose.

JDNSW
10th November 2015, 09:51 PM
Yes. 80" Landrovers were equipped as standard with a toolbar. But the thing thatt killed it was that almost at the same time as the first Landrovers, farm tractors were moviing to three pint linkage tools, and also, while in 1946 a drawbar horsepower of about 25HP (which is about all that the Landrover could do continuously)was typical, by the early fifties, most tractors being sold were a lot more powerful.

This meant that both the Landrover and Jeep were only relevant as tractors for perhaps five years, although no doubt a few diehard users lingered on for decades.

That brings back Memories ! ... similar to the Stack-Sack method of 45+ years ago..(The trouble with us grey-hairs, we remember stuff from the Dawn of Time...)

Hessian bags filled with sand/cement, great for garden walls, as the material would quickly rot off, and then be rendered. - Someone in my suburb put one us decades ago... Looks suitably 'rustic', as the lack of perfection suits the unskilled builder...:p
